There are painters who transform the sun into a yellow spot,
but there are others who with the help of their art and their intelligence
transform a yellow spot into the sun.

Sorry Silverquick, it's a Japanese book but I guess you can place an order at Amazon.com
However, it features articles like
- How the damage is calculated
- How INT and MND affects success rate of Enfeebling magic
- How accuracy and evasion is calculated
- What's the relationship between Sneak/Trick attack and DEX/AGI
Also, there's a leveling guide and other useful stuffs.
You are correct as the game stands now. However pre-Luclin (Velius, Kunark) Gnome warriors all but dissappeared from the game. They could not achieve the same HP numbers as Ogre warriors etc thanks to several imbalances, namely gear and stat related. As the game stands inflated gear wise now any class can hit the theoretical cap in stats and use AA's. Once upon a time this was not the case. So I imagine some old "fun" combo's are coming back. However the issue still applies to a non-maxed out (stat wise) player. Maxing stats isn't achieveable until late in the end game. Min/Max'ing is still an issue there.
I've had some experiences with the "I want to have fun" VS "I want to be/play the "perfect" job combo" mentalities. I guess both are fine... however, if you put that seek flag up, you are competing with invites from the various other mage classes out there. At higher levels a Rdm/melee combo will be left in the dust, and I don't think you will have any fun sitting in Jeuno lfg for 4 hours.
Also, as mentioned before, this game is meant to be played in cooperation with others (Exception to the Bst, unless you want a Bst party for a BCNM ) When putting up that flag, people expect you to play your job the best way you can. This means eating food, having up to date subs, supporting your group, and adding to the overall exp that you get. If you sub melee, your not adding to your strengths at all, and in essence are cheating your group out of a "traditional" Rdm.
Play how you want yes, but please be considerate of everybody else. It is both selfish and rude to come into a party with a combo such as this. Much like the Whm/Nin I had to party with in CN awhile back:sweat:
Personally, I have a lot of fun playing my cookie cutter combo, I recommend you try it before you pass it off. Overall, many of the people who "want to have fun" end up quitting the game because they cannot keep up with the better job combos.. I hope this does not befall you. Happy hunting and magic bursting is fun!
I've noticed a lot of these people wanting to play the fun combos are not at 41+ or 48+ (refresh and haste level for red mages)
While you should certainly have fun playing the job combos you want to play, even if you managed to get into a group who has the "cookie cutter job combo" mentality, once you have refresh you're going to be casting so much, you'll be getting maybe 3-4 melee swings in per fight. Once you get haste, even if you have auto attack on while you're casting you'll be lucky to get a swing or two in because of all of the spells you'll be throwing out.
Refresh on 3-4 people
Debuffs
Magic Bursts
Hastes
Back up heals
Its just that at higher levels, no matter how hard you try you just arent going to have enough time to melee AND cast what you need to be casting.
Not only time but MP aswell  . For parties which chain pulling I am constantly at 2 digit MP. Although this helps the party mages and they are always ready to go. I simply ask the tank that I will sit after landing debuffs till Convert refreshes. Then again, there are times that I can't even sit... the moment I sit mob is doing Rino Guard/Cocoon :dead: , dispell and they do again . Its not an unusual sight, and you want those buffs dispelled before any kind of skill chain start. Nothing is worse than Monk's raging fist only lands 1 hit, or even Drg Pentha thrust lands 2 hits because of mob's buff.
Edit: To Silverquick. I have found a thread which is about discussing usefull techniques, which includes some formulas and such. Its on the 6th post now. Its in japanese so hope you can understand some...
At lvl 20 in Qufim I dont melee, just seems to hinder my magic and I do pathetic damage anyway ><
Psalm 137:8, "O Daughter of Babylon, doomed to destruction, happy is he who repays you for what you have done to us - he who seizes your infants and dashes their brains against the rocks." - In God We Trust
I notice the higher the level the more exepting other players become of which sub-job the player uses. As level 49 RDM I relized that although I would not dare to call it Melee I could still contribute to the party via my En- spells. And you are also forgeting equipment.
Equipment makes a big part of any classes attributes, and if the rdm/nin such as my self is well equipped it could easily make up for other short-cummings in the combo.
That being said, in order to achieve this combo effectively you have to know when to use spells to almost a science, however you can experement a little if there is a Bard in the party.
Also you have to think long term, as of now the level gap is set at 75, but that won't always be the case, and in the future its alot more likely other combo like Ninja for exemple will improve in their effectiveness.
Originally posted by Satummoo would it be ok to lv a RDM to 18, then lv a War to 15
Then do RDM/WAR to 30, then switch to BRD/RDM?
Would I still get parties between 18-30?
Maybe.. there are a lot of really cruddy parties at those levels and peope will take what they get...
As for BRD/RDM.... ick. BRD/WHM would get a lot more invites and be a lot more popular. You're not going to get any special use of /RDM, since the special RDM skills/spells are limited to Gravity... Magic Finale is close enough to Dispel, you won't get Refresh or Convert...
With a /WHM you'd get Curaga, Protectra, and all the status ailment spells.
