    Re: Ranger Panic

    1. There really isn't very much of a "fast track" to 30 other than just party as much as you can, and be sure to learn.

    2. You'll find that race doesn't matter much at all aside from maybe HP/MP, so choose the one you'll be able to stand looking at/can identify with more.

    3. For a Ranger subjob . . . I can't help you much there.

    4. There is no best server, except for the one your friends (if any) are on.

    /welcome

For EXP parties, stick with ninja sub. When you hit 75, other support jobs will become more beneficial to use, but knowing the randomness of exp parties and that you're going to get a different tank everytime, stick with sub ninja and dual Hawker Knifes.

You know, for a minute there I thought that the original poster was a troll...

            1. Parties.

            2. Humes for balance, Galka for Melee/Tanking focus.

            3. Ninja for some melee, for ranger I'd recommend Thief or Ninja for sure.

            4. If there's a random button nowadays, press that. If not, just pick the one with the coolest name.

Start THF, take that to 18 at least to unlock subjob, then level WAR to 37 to complete your first subjob. The reason I say THF initially is because RNG is a job that needs gil and gil comes into a THF's hands a little easier initially.

After you're done with WAR, go unlock RNG, NIN and SAM. You can fiddle with RNG a little bit, but I'd take that to 18 at furthest before taking care of your NIN and SAM subjobs. The reason I say this is RNG is rather helpful for levelling Samurai in the 20s and 30s with the Accuracy Bonus Trait /RNG will grant you at 20+. It makes hitting targets a whole lot easier and makes using mithkabobs very practical.

After you get NIN and SAM done to subjob level, you'll not only be set to level RNGm but you'll probably have already skilled up crossbow from THF and Bow from SAM enough to do well starting out.

2: what is the better hume or galka?
Doesn't matter. Race is a purely aesthetic choice in FFXI. Galka will have a slight edge on STR, HP and VIT initially, but in the long run, it doesn't matter because lots of people can build up STR easily at high level on RNG and VIT and HP don't mean much since RNG has crappy defenses anyway.

              3: best subjob??
WAR will give you the potential damage output.
SAM will give you the best TP gain options, +5 STR from Hasso and decent defensive options from Seigan and Third Eye.
NIN will give you the best defensive options through Utsusemi.

None of them are really better than the other, you just pick what's most appropriate for the situation at hand. A lot of the time, you can do just fine with WAR, but there are times you'll need to think defensively and should consider SAM or NIN more. If its protection from single-target magics and melee attacks, then its NIN, no question. If its just melee attacks to worry about, SAM would be a better since it has offensive options to switch to if things cool down. WAR is really for when you just want to go all out on damage and works fairly well at many levels and earlier than most people are willing to give it credit for.

              best server??
The one you have friends on, honestly. I'm part of a pretty friendly LS on the Odin server called LimitBreakRadio if you don't have any immediate friends that play some people there would probably be willing to help you get started. If you're interested, I can get you in late Friday or sometime over the weekend.

                Re: Ranger Panic

I'm going to resurrect this thread for my own benefit, and maybe for the benefit of the OP as well-

I got WAR to 30 mid last week- and afterwards unlocked RNG and NIN. I'm going to go with a NIN sub because it seems like the stat boost from dual Archer's / Hawker's Knives will just be devastating. I'm up to 10RNG and 12 NIN, and already I can tell that these will be expensive jobs. Here are my main questions- what are the essential equipment for a RNG, and what's simply gravy if you can afford it? For example, Leaping Boots? I've spent a little time camping LL w/out luck, and even if I do get the drop- would I be better off selling or wearing these? Hawker's vs. Archer's Knives as well- stat difference doesn't seem huge, but maybe it makes a big difference to have the Hawker+1's?

Also, for funding, would I be better of Farming or Crafting? I've got 9 in Goldsmithing and 4 in Woodworking (so I could make my first batch of arrows). Would I do well to pursue either or both of these as my main source of income? Finally, would it be worth the time investment to skill up in other crafts related to arrow making, like smithing and clothcraft for fletching and arrowheads? Being such a low level- it's hard to see into the future to see if the time investment in crafting will pay off, because I can't tell exactly how expensive things are going to get.

I'm willing to do low-level crafting as a money maker- i've been doing OK on brass ingots so far. I'll also say that crafting arrows may be a viable option for money- not many people seem to sell arrows at the AH- and i doubt if all the RNG are crafting all of their arrows. Stack of Fang arrows, for instance, goes for 5-7K a stack, which seems like a lot, given how fast one can go through arrows. I imagine the better quiverable arrows might sell even better.

Just looking for some differet opinions and points of view. Thanks!
Meddle not in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup.

If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you.

/NIN is nice, but its more about reaching your max accuracy potential than anything else and you will have access to a lot of that via gear and job traits anyway. /SAM and /WAR will be better in terms of DD subs, /WAR as early as 30 and /SAM is good to use at 60+.

By all means, level /NIN because it does have its uses, but make sure to finish WAR and unlock SAM if you haven't already.

I wouldn't concern myself with Bounding Boots (Leaping Boots got moved to BCNM, but BBs are the same thing, just R/E) too much. The NQ Archer's are just fine as is, so no need to HQ them. Chiopetra Dagger has comprable stats to Hawker's, but its an NM drop in Phomina Aquaducts.

As you level, collect and keep the HQ bows at levels 30, 40 and 50. Those are important. Also make time in your 50s to get the Selene Bow. While Vali's/Eurytos' Bow is more desireable for RNGs, they are somewhat difficult to obtain and Selene Bow is the next closest thing to either of them. Orthenus Bow and Fransisca are also drops worth your time to obtain as you hit 60+, find some friends to help you with these items.

One of the points people seldom mention about RNG is the fact that a lot of our best gear is absolutely free NM or BCNM drops. And most of the stuff you'll be picking up from 55+ will continue to see use at high level.

Also, for funding, would I be better of Farming or Crafting? I've got 9 in Goldsmithing and 4 in Woodworking (so I could make my first batch of arrows). Would I do well to pursue either or both of these as my main source of income? Bonecraft and Woodworking pair up a bit better than Goldsmithing would. While Goldsmithing would help you make silver bullets, the use of silver bullets I'd consider much lower than that of bolts and arrows. The best Arrowheads are made from bone materials, so Bonecraft and Woodworking go hand-in-hand.

Even if you take up crafting, there's always going to be some farming involved to support RNG, NIN and also COR. RNG starts getting the opportunity to make some BCNM money at level 40, but getting that far isn't as expensive as most players would think.

Fang Arrows would come from Black Tiger Fangs, I believe, which are a favorite farming target for some players of slightly higher level. They tend to drop off the tigers in Jugner and Batilla downs a bit, so that's going to affect the price of crafting the Fang Arrows.

I honestly don't do much crafting for RNG, I've started to find COR a bit more expensive, so I've moved my crafting focus smithing for bullets. Everyone has thier own way of keeping up with ammo need, RNG is actually fortunate that it has some cheaper ammo options than COR ever will.

Learn to love the crossbow, things like Holy Bolts are dirt cheap and with a good MND build compete pretty closely with high tier ammo in other weapons (they just suck for Weaponskills at high level). Bloody and Sleep bolts will help you solo while Acid and Blind Bolts will support your PT.

Scorpion Arrows have the greatest longevity of most arrows and are still worth keeping around in a pinch at higher levels, just don't make a habit of EXPing with them at 60+ or using them at endgame. Great for Farming and that 40-60 level range, though.

Use Scavange often. Stock up the firesand and lumber you find to sell or save for crafting. The arrows, bolts and bullets you pick up can also be used in a pinch.

Also, while Wide Scan is useful for tracking NMs, it will never garuntee you claim. Shadowbind, on the other hand, is your instant-claim tool, so its more important to know where and when your NMs are going to show than tracking them.

RNG is a fun job and great for a lot of things, just keep it prepared and you'll always have fun with it.

                      Re: Ranger Panic

Ammunition is actually quite cheap up until you start using Silver Bullets and Demon/Kabura arrows so I wouldn't really worry about all the hassle of raising wood working just for that.

As a 69 WW I can tell you that it's actually less expensive for me to buy my own arrows rather than make them even though I can H.Q. most of them. The reason being by the time I gather all my materials and get through synthing, I could have farmed up enough gil to buy the ammo I just made and then some.

Making gil off WW has been rather hard since the decline in demand for ammo and elemental staves way back during inflation. Unless you intend to raise it to 80+ to HQ Shihei for a profit, it's really not that great and rather expensive to level in today's economy.

If you want two crafts that go really well together (especially when farming) give Bone and Leather a shot. They aren't terribly expensive since at a lot of levels you will end up farming mobs that drop materials usable by both crafts. (However, 43-53/55 leather is a serious drag)

To use BBQ's tiger example, I used the fangs they dropped to raise my bonecraft making the fangs into arrowheads and am currently still trying to cap my leather craft to 60 on the hides making leather. Now that I'm done using the fangs for bone I simply trade them to the NPC in southern san d'Oria for 2100 for every 3 fangs.

There are a bunch of different ways to make money in this game and I suggest looking into them, and that you may want to consider THF and BST for farming.
