I'm planning to be a cheap RNG (lol, oxymoron) and I'm wondering what gives you more damage, the bow or the arrow? (Or gun and bullet) If it's the bow, I think I can devote 70% of my equipment funds into bow upgrades and 30% into ammo. Thanks
I remember when I first started playing way back in the days, there were very few RNG at high levels to team with. I eventually started regularly partying with a nice JP RNG every day... he used iron arrows and had some of the worst RNG equip possible. But heck, he still did more damage than the other DD's I partied with, so it was worth it :p
If you want to save money, get a nice +1 bow (not too expensive since many people are skilling up woodworking or whatever), and just use cheap arrows like scorpion (or beetle or whatever is your level). You may not do as much damage as some other RNG's but the party will still love you.
I believe in karma. Anyone I treat badly probably deserved it.
In the higher levels you get know eachother and you know what you can do and how you do it.
As for RNG, just use the ~3..4k Ammo up to 75 and the special ammo 12k~20k for WS and maybe Barrage
I still did on a IT+1 Crawler a Sidewinder for 900 dmg in the Tree with Fire Arrows, Demons where out
And yes IT+1 is too weak for a RNG
One thing you need to have are to following:
- NIN Support (Saves your life more then once)
-+1 Archery Ring x2 (You can skip the lv45, and prolly the 65+ as well if you're really short on money)
- 2x Archery Knifes, no need for Hawkers or Hawkers+1
- Use Noct up to AF. No need for +1, since you'll miss anyway in the lower levels.
- Use some RAcc or RAtt Food, the choice is yours which one you like more.
- Try and grab your hands on O-Bow and Francisca. Both NM Rare/Ex drops.
- Since your hume, use Hand RSE1 and if you're lucky to grab the Feet RSE2 from a BCNM60 use it as well.
- Don't listen to a Mantra named thegod.
Sidenote: I make all my ammo myself, execept Demons, including the heads, except Bonecrafting. So i'm speding around 2k for a Fire Arrow Stack.

lvl 30 rse hands better than noct hands? I've been using noct cuz I thought it was best. What makes rse better?
Also, is food choice below 55 really just your choice or at that lvl are there any that outshine others?
I RNG 75 I WAR 37 I NIN 38 I SAM 50 I Woodworking 92+2

Agreed.
RNG isn't nearly as expensive as some may think... it's just expensive to "deck them out." Most of the +1 gear and nice stuff won't make a drastic difference. Yes, you will be weaker than better equipped RNG's (and very noticeably if they're using nice things like e-bow), but as Steelshine says, you will still be better than nearly all melee out there. A RNG with the basic gear Elsurion listed will still be a bigger benefit to a party than nearly any WELL-equipped melee DD's.

The Hands has the +3STR -1AGI on it, and the Noct+1 RAcc+2. Also the RSE is free, while you have to dish out for the Hands a few 10k, i think it's around 80k or so at the moment.
I also used RSE2 Boots on ZM8 with Musk+1/Silver. It was nice, i got around 10dmg more dmg, the problem was then i got aggro in the end of the fight and hitted the dusk...
@sharlngan: with that setup i described, every other Melee will go cry. Except a good MNK.
Also i don't see the point in wasting Money for a mere 5dmg/shoot into Demons, when i can have the Ice/Fire for nearly a fraction of the cost. Not all RNG want to go to IGE. Also it helps a Tank to keep Hate, but the mob still visits you too many times...
i'm leveling war now, and i just owned a rng back to back nights cause the rng couldnt land shoots.
he had two archers and decent gears, but no racc on his arrows, and no xbnow w/ holys...(aka an average ranger...cant say gimped just cause he likes bow at lvl 30)
gimped ranger's are the worst DDs in the game because they do no damage seeing as how they rarely land shots.
of course this isnt the norm, most parties would just fight weaker mobs for sub 200 per chain kill xp.
Why be like someone famous when you can be like me.
All that matters is the hate line. It's your job to do damage, enough damage that at any given time, the mob hates you only a LITTLE LESS than it hates the tank. If you can fire ammo non-stop and not pull hate, then you're either gimpy or your tank is awesome. In that case if you're using low level ammo, you need to upgrade. If you can fire ammo and pull the hate with one or two shots, using bad ammo, then there is no point in upgrading it since you won't be able to fire w/o dying anyway.
I've seen rng with all the best gear who fire 2 shots/fight, and I've seen rng with e-bow using iron arrows and firing like mad. Gear, ammo.... it doesn't matter if you don't know how to use it. Walk the hate line and use your blinks, your party will thank you.
