Acid Bolt= Dispel?

Anyone ever notice Acid bolt dispels def up abilities like scissor Guard (sp?) on crabs and Cocoon on crawlers?

It doesn't dispel it, it just helps to offset it. Acid bolt not = Dispel.

no i think it actually dispels it cause i hit for the exact same as I was before the crab used it. Found this out earlier cause i was in a pt without a rdm or brd. Just to clairfy i hit the crab for ~ 20-25 when def buff was up with holy bolts and when i hit with the acid it went back to the normal 58-60 per holy bolt. So the only way this would work is it dispeling the crabs buff or canceling it out like the spider slow cancels haste.

intersting idea maybe this works in ballista where it might cancel defender and demon arrows might cancel berserk.

Look, do this. Let the crab buff, shoot your bolt, then do a normal hit, THEN HAVE THE RED MAGE DISPEL. Geez, this is a simple concept. >.>

defense up and defense down from acid bolts overwrite eachother... doesn't work on any other abilities tho(I'm sure u know that)... interesting idea w/ the demons canceling berserk....

Dispel does nothing in this case and we only get "No Effect" since Scissor Guard is already cancelled by Acid Bolt.

This is the reason having RNG with Xbow and Acid Bolt is very nice in Qufim or SSG.

used to be a non-believer in this.

Then one day i accidently hit a golem after crystal shield with an acid bolt, saw the rdm's dispel do nothing.

so yes, it does dispel def up.

Havent played in ages, nor did I ever fight crawlers with a rdm who had dispel so here's a follow-up question:
What if the RDM casts dispel first, returning the crawler to normal status, then you follow it up with an acid bolt? Does it drop the crawler's defense below normal or once its done cocoon can you nolonger drop back down below that mark. (Forgive the ignorance its been months since I've xp'd)

it doesn't dispel it persay but rather you cannot have any stacked atk up down or def up down spells active at one time. help rdms out by shooting a 20 gil bolt whenever what your fighting def ups itself

Before answering this, we need to understand each buff / debuff effect has a "rank." For example, Acid Bolt and all WAR's breaks except for Full Break (= rank 2) are rank 1 debuffs. As for mob's buffs, both Cocoon and Scissor Guard are rank 1 buffs.

If their rank is the same, they cancell each other out. This is the reason Acid Bolt can remove Scissor Guard.

So, what's gonna happen when crabs use Scissor Guard after Acid Bolt lands? Well, the effect of Acid Bolt is overwritten by +def effect of Scissor Guard. Therefore, even if RDM dispels it, we need to reapply Acid Bolt.

However, one with lower rank cannot cancell the other with higher rank. For instance, Sand Shield (+def) of Anticans is a rank 3 effect. Neither Acid Bolt nor Armor Break can cancel it as a result. We have to wait until either BRD or RDM removes it in order to reapply Acid Bolt.

It's off topic but applying Shield Break on beatles is a waste of TP since Rhino Guard (rank 1) cancells it.

Apple I think part of the question they are asking is if the monster has a +Def up on and you use Acid Bolt with it overright and do -Def (Which seems to be the logic to me that every FF game has done) or will it just cancel the +Def and leave the monster at normal defense.

From your explination of the ranking and all it seems to agree that if the monster has +Def and you use Acid Bolt or something that does Def Down, then the monster will have the +Def remove and have -Def active.

Which basically makes Acid Bolts a lot more powerful then a RDMs dispel in that case.
