  • Bow Progression...

    Okay, so what bow/gun do we start with and end with?

    I don't want to buy a Lv. 40 +1 Bow and then realize I have to sell it in two Lv's because I could get a RARE/EX bow and whatnot. Also, arrows and bullets.

    When do you start using HQ bows? (I do not want to take a 40,000g bow to the Dunes, or Qufim and watch a bunch of dagger weilding, Bronze armor wearing, no food eating, WHM subbing, non-'Voking WARs leech off my EXP because "omg i cnt wit 2 git drk jb nd be best job in gam cuz e0e0r0x0r!111bbq".)

    I was thinking of playing a so-so RNG until about Lv. 30 when I get my hands on some Noct+1, HQ rings and whatever.

    pls don't half-ass the job til 30. I know other ppl will half-ass their jobs til then, but don't fall to their level.

    that said, the first piece (imho most important) of HQ gear you should pick up are the rings.

    Grab a Hunter's longbow at 12 and that should last you until Power bow +1 at 16. Optionally you can skip the HLB and just wait for the power bow, most of your good gear doesn't come around till then anyway. The power bow will last you until 30 when great bow +1 becomes available. Then at 40 is Battle Bow+1/Shikar Bow and at 50 is War Bow +1.

    First good arrows are Fangs at 15, then just keep getting the RAcc+ ones as they become available.

    As you can see, rng really isn't a job of massive, constant upgrades. Most of your gear will last you 10 levels before you need to upgrade.

        yeah pbow will last you 14 levels, longest lasting bow till warbow+1

        if your gonna half arse it, at lerast keep marks and ar5chery leveled.

        and really there isnt too much to half ass pre 30 anyway..

        you need the +1 bow bottom line, you wont hit sh.. w/o it.

          When do you start using guns? I heard it's not really worth it till 71. He said you can start using guns at Lv. 55 that's when they become useful but the amount of damage they do more than arrows and bows isn't worth the price. He said using guns at Lv. 55 will only give you about 5-9 more per shot on average. Given, and overtime that is more than a bow. But it isn't worth the price of it. Only a out of his mind elitist would do something like that. These are his words.

          He said keep both Marksmanship and Archery capped.

          Bows: 1-[insert O-bow's Lv here]
          Obow (crossbow): [insert O-bow's Lv here]-71
          Gun: 71-75

          Keeping both capped.

          Is that what I should be using?

            is he joking?

            use guns as early as level 50...

            level 52 equiped with must+1 fighting robbers and sand lizards in kuf. tunnel..

            89 dmg per show with bow...(yes exactly 89, i think im at my ranged attack cap, untill i bump up my str, not sure but no matter wut food i eat 89 is the highest per shot on crabs with warbow+1 using ice arrows)

            my equip is godly, the only thing i could have to make me any better would be a 2nd hawkers+1 instead of only one..

            nomads+1 jaged gorg republic pants full nocts+1, winged boots...ect...

            115-130 per normal shot with must+1 on crabs...


            do the math, its a whooooooole lot more then 5 dmg....

            and the delay on the gun is like 20-30 more then on the warbow+1....and once a must+2 becomes available delay wont be an issue at all they almost have the same delay.

            540-565 i mean 25 more delay isnt sh.., you have to wait that long anyway for hate control.

              What about Crossbow?

              He said use XBows are more powerful than Bows in the 50's and Guns are not needed until 71. He says he can pull off a ton with Holy Arrows at that Lv.

                at 30-40 x-bows outdamage bows.

                at 40-50 bows will outdamage x-bows. x-bows after that isn't worth using (imo) until 67 where you get an o-bow.

                gun is always good but i can't justify the cost of 13k stack of bullets for a party that might suck no matter how good your gears are. I also don't find them super useful on hnms except with a hellfire you can get 108% tp in a good barrage.

                that means a rng will be tanking which is not always a good idea.

                  Since basically you said Bows rock, is Ebow worth getting?

                  If so, when should I pick it up?

                  By the way, I'm not lazy about farming or anything. I want to play the best RNG possible. However, within reason.

                  I had a 75 RNG tell me the only way to do DMG is get a Peacock Charm at 30 and use Guns ASAP.

                  IMO, he's a elitist who need some help. He takes shit too far.

                  The RNG I talk to on my server. I either talk to some shitbox. Or I talk into some elitist once you ding 30 farm for a Peacock Charm then make sure you can get +1 stuff. But get +2 ASAP because +1 is what n00b use.

                    E-bow is really good but I honestly can't justify the 6-7mil pricetag on it for my server. You can get by with warbow+1 or go with a musketeer+1/2 until 67 when the option of using an Onthius' Bow opens up. (its a good x-bow that'll last up to lvl 75)

                    but if you are planning on picking up an E-bow, pick it up at lvl 55 when it becomes available since the biggest incentive is the fact that its lvl req is relatively early.

                      he never once said bows rock, he said 30-40 xbows outdamage bows, and thats more to do with what you fight during those levels then anything else, but those are the levels where blm is stronger then rng anyway.

                      40+ bow >> xbow (can be argued that obow >> ebow but i wont even touch on that subject as it would only confuse, let it suffice to say i am fairly confident after using an ebow and a gun that ebow >>obow)

                      guns are always and will always be the best total damage done to a mob unless your rng accuracy is horrid.

                      guns are best used from levels 52+, the gun gives +10 ranged accuracy thats more then you could get from any bow or xbow, so guns are definately more accurate, meaning more slug hits then you would get with sidewinder and a bow.


                      ive compared gun to ebow exstensively, and they are about even with ebow outdamaging it with a great tank.....not only that, ebow may be 6 mil gil, but the amount saved in ammo would be well worth the cost of the bow.


                      120k to get me from 55-56, and thats if i dont die.

                        doesnt that make you the exact thing you are trying to avoid? the noobness can only stop at you, yourself. just b/c there are lots of ppl in valk that dont know how to play yet, does'nt mean you should be that way either. esp. if you know better. otherwise its just one vicious cycle when going thru the valkrum blues~

                          Don't go to dunes. There's no reason, unless you LOVE the litterbox, to go to dunes as rng. You can solo worms until 24 (some even go higher) if you know where to go. Just be prepared to buy lots of ammo. Worms: Ronf > La Theine > Maze of Shakrami > Korroloka Tunnel > Qufim.

                          I kept marksmanship and archery leveled and focused mainly on bows. I've used some of the early level guns and imo its not worth it. Don't bother with guns until 50 or 52. Always get the HQ rings. I mainly use war bow +1 now. I'm not about to shell out 10mil for an ebow that is only a bit better than what I have now. I'd rather save my gil for ammo, occasional gun usage, and things like Amemet Mantle +1 in a few levels. Main benefit of guns: they are not a piercing weapon like arrows/bolts, so they aren't nerfed against mobs like crabs and beetles. The RACC boost on the Musk series of guns is good, too. Last night on crabs I was doing 85ish (w/o food, left it in MH >.<) with scorp arrows, 115ish with silver bullets. Experiment though, find what you like. As RNG we have some freedom to choose what weapons we want to use, unlike jobs like DRG where 1 thing (polearm) is it.

                          And don't listen to someone tell you that w/o Peacock Charm and E-bow you're gimp. That's BS. Run a parser sometime and compare your RNG numbers to the other DD in your party. Even using scorps on crabs, I can out damage my static's mnk by about 3-1, and he's a good mnk, too. We have a good pld tank, and I can fire as fast as possible and not really worry about getting hate. Rate of fire > uber-gear.

                          On a side note, in switching back and forth from Emp. Pin to AF hat, I didn't see even 1 point in change in damage. It seemed the RATT on the hat wasn't really doing anything. Is it possible I reached the damage cap and needed food/str boost to see any more damage?

                            same here at lvl 56 mithran rng...switching from Af hat to hairpin doesnt do a single point of damage difference up or down.


                            not having ebow doesnt make you gimped, and i know 4, 4 rangers with peacoc charm who doesnt even use it with their ranger unless fighting gods or HNMs.

                            IMO the charm is not a ranger item, it was just made so wayyyy back when rng/war was a norm somewhat. I mean you lose 5-6 ranged attack, that cannot be made up as easily as 5 ranged accuracy.

                            If i do get a charm maybe i'll wear it with ranger and wear rng JSE instead of Af body, thats basically subing out 6 ranged attack from the jaged goregt for 7 ranged atk from JSE.

                            I am still full time gun ranger...(have like 17 more stacks of bullets then i retire as gun ranger) Its a waste of gil for a marginal gain in power, and the delay sucks when trying to solo anything.
