Something to note before I go on about RNGs. SMN changes all throughout the game, especially post 30/40 when they get the awesome support spells with their summons. Blink/stoneskin/spring water/etc. all kick a lot of ass. Then around 70 (thanks Bagel) they become the most damaging class out there. So if you're looking to RNG because you want to be a damage dealer, just realize that SMN is a damage dealer too, just takes a long time to get there.

About playing a RNG: It's fairly simple during the battle. The only somewhat difficult part is pulling. In order to be a good puller (atleast in my opinion), you need to have a good perspective on how much MP the mages need, aggro types of certain mobs, what mobs link, aggro range, link range, etc. During the actual battle, fire an arrow, hit with your main weapon for some TP, use TP, not too much different from a damage dealer except for the fact that you'll be doing more damage than anyone else most likely. This means you have to learn about hate, how to "walk the line" of hate, and how to handle having it.

There's really only 2 "acceptable" subjobs for RNG (3 if you count SAM post 60). NIN and WAR. I'm not going to go into the strengths and benefits of the two just because there are NUMEROUS other threads and posts that debate the difference between the two and I don't want this to turn into another one of those >.<

Another thing to think about is that RNG is a lot more expensive than SMN is (atleast before SMN gets austere, and personally I think I've spent more getting to 50 than a whole suit of austere is worth ). It's probably the second most expensive class only because in order to be a really good ranger, you need to spend all the extra money on all the extra goodies that give you benefits ie emperor's hairpin, leaping boots, all the +1 bows, up to date arrows, etc etc etc. Other classes CAN be more expensive (I know my RDM friend has spent a shit load more than I have for instance), but only if you choose to make them more expensive and push those classes to or past their limit. Most people can "get by" on just the stuff they need for parties and what have you for almost every other class.

And that's about it. Really RNG isn't too hard a class to play when you're in parties. I get to a point sometimes where I'm not even thinking about it, it just sorta happens. It's no where near the mindlessness of playing MNK is though. Just easy to get into autopilot mode if you ask me. :D
