Something many here don't consider for the Hairpin is that it's perfect for ninja leveling.
So, it's not all that "good" for ranger but it's still better than the other stuff but it's good for ninja, as long as you level ninja keep the hairpin then when done (I promote leveling sub first so you don't have to switch ) sell the little bastard and bathe in the gil.

For all you warrior, samurai and bard(lol) subbers don't mind the above.

Ahhh, these two quotes alone allow me to enjoy my eccentric personality :spin:

      Magnifying glasses/specs - Def 1 Dark+1 Clothcrafth Skill+1 Lv.1 All Jobs.

Basically I plan on being a gun wielding mithra ( my ranger will never touch a bow - EVER ) wearing the most expensive gear out there ( note that I didn't say best ) and ... GLASSES. Since I feel the Emp Hairpin isn't really needed, might as well replace it with something that just "looks cool"

It was a choice between the clear glasses (Clothcraft), the black sunglasses (Goldsmith), or the tinted brown glasses (Bonecraft). Since I wanna look scholarly, I chose the Magnifying Specs.

There are acutally equippable glasses? Awesome XD

I recently discovered that there are glasses graphics in the game when I began the mannequin quest; the first person you talk to is sporting them. But never did I think you would be able to equip something like that! *Plans on buying a pair of sunglasses, no matter the cost*

To get a pair of sunglasses/clear glasses etc will cost you upwards of 1 million gil and take about 3 weeks...

          1) Gotta get that particular craft to level 48
          2) Gotta hand in enough items to the guild point NPC to allow you to purchase the item
          3) There is a cap to the amount of guild points you can earn in a day (RL day)
          4) It's rare/ex so there's no other way to get it

          Good luck!

Why would a rng ever need Magnifying Spectacles except for looks? I think people have them mixed up with the "Spectacles" which is a neck piece and would not replace the hairpin. Stats on the spectacles are

            Level: 59
            Def: 2
            Job: MNK/WHM/RDM/THF/BST/BRD/RNG/SAM/NIN
            Ice -7 Acc + 7 Ranged Acc +7
            Source: Mysterytour

and DEX in my opinion is always useful...because it improves chances of critical hits and Critical hit dmg...im not saying a rng should focus on it, but Dex bonuses should not be thrown out as useless. e.hairpin and leaping boots net you +6 DEX and AGI which is a big bonus at low lvls. They won't last you the whole game, but theyre useful till better equip becomes available. Not much Acc bonus gear is available at low lvls so AGI bonus gear is the thing to get. +2 AGI = +1 Ranged Acc is the general consensus it seems, so get Ranged Acc over AGI in the slots you can...certain slots dont have much or any, like boots, so you're stuck with either +3 Dex/Agi(Leaping Boots) or +Dex/+12% movement speed (Strider Boots).

The money that a ranger wastes on leaping boots and emperor hairpin would be much better spent leveling woodworking skills.
              Just do it.

Even if your elvaan wanted the glasses, it wouldn't be possible. Cooking only give ya a Chefs Hat at the first level of guild points.

If you want glasses/shades/sunglasses, you'll need 48 in either Goldsmithing, Clothcrath, or Bonecrafting.

Also the 1,000,000 gil estimate applies only if you have to still get those 48 skill points in that particular craft. If you already have 48+, it'll cost less for the items.

Ok I have both, camped the the Leaping Lizzy and had the Pin given to me by a friend who was quitting. I have to say they make a bit of diff over the other stuff out there, but not 700-800k worth of a diff. The only good thing about them is that you can sell them off once you get done with AF and have close to a third of your money for E-bow already. I think the overall feeling is, if you have the money, go for it, if you don't, don't waste weeks just trying to get the money to buy them or getting them to drop off the NM.

I think the more relevant question (for a RNG) is not whether they are worth the cost, but whether they are worth the time to hunt.

Certainly, I would think that any RNG should be able to obtain both of these items from their respective sources, and sell them when they get AF, if desired.

As far as the Evasion goes... if you are a person that believes in mass-chaining VTs for exp, Evasion is undoubtedly worthwhile. Against VT, even a lowly D rank RNG (with appropriate +Eva gear) can dodge a significant number of attacks.

They sure aren't color coded for stats.

Sneak Attack, possibly the most famous of all JAs that are directly affected by stats, has a green icon (in fact, all THF JAs do). Green = Wind. Wind = AGI. AGI does not affect Sneak Attack.

Sharpshot, a ranged accuracy JA, has a purple icon. Purple = Thunder = DEX. So now, DEX affects ranged accuracy? Squenix has explictly stated otherwise.

The colors of the icons are a cute touch, but as far as them holding any significance... that is pure superstition at this point.

                            for taru?

I have been reading about both hairpin and boots for quite awhile.. I decided this past week that I wanted to play RNG now after lvling my mage job all the way...

The thing that I question is the fact that for a taru is the +6agi on these 2 items worth it over items that would provide str?

I understand that hitting something for 10 dmg 5times is better than hitting something for 30dmg 1/5 times (i think heh).. but should I really burn all this money into these items?

On my server currently, the items are rising steadily in price.. boots used to be 220k now they are 350k.. hairpin used to be 250k now its 400k..

I could manage the money and throw it down on these 2 items, but the whole str/agi thing for tarus is really confusing me.. This is probably why I stuck to mage jobs for so long lol..

                            Thanks in advance..

Also I have searched these forums for the like question I had.. and I did not want to post this in a new thread since this one is basically the same thing just I had the same question mixed in with race :X..

I would love to talk to other taru rngs.. and the ones that I have talked to are on the mindset that you have to have these items because they are uber and people will invite you more? I'm still puzzled on that because I have grouped with a lot of rngs of different races that didnt have these items before their AF...

Not really needed. Taru can do just fine with RSE in most cases as long as you don't neglect the "major" Racc+ items. (Rings, archers/hawkers, +1 bow etc)

The difference in hit rate/damage is a lot more minimal than you're suggesting btw.

I read earlier that the 10 Evasion from the hairpin would be useful on VTs, but not ITs. Would this mean that it would be very useful for farming Tabar Beaks and Tigers in Battalia and Sauromugue at around level 50-55?

And on a related note, around level 50-55, would farming the two types of monsters above be one of the better ways to consistently farm gil (as opposed to camping a NM for hours, netting 200k+ or nothing)?

                                Thanks.
