  • Some Gear Choices

I normally don't have a problem with choosing gear, but I want some input, as there seems to be several sets I could choose from. I'm a level 28 RNG right now, so I'm looking at gear for the low 30s. Here's what I'm currently looking at, with the items in bold being my choice as of now. Some input would be greatly appreciated.

    Body:
    Centurion's Scale Mail
Custom Vest (+32 HP, +2 VIT, but -5 defense compared to Centurion's)

    Hands:
    Custom Gloves
    Centurion's Finger Gauntlets

    Feet:
    Custom Boots
    Kingdom Clogs
    Centurion's Greaves

I've been looking at gear all the way until 60, but there really doesn't seem to be anything that stands out (not counting AF), besides the expensive stuff like Emperor Hairpin and Leaping Boots. Should I mainly use the Scale sets up until AF? I have a 52 Hume RNG in my LS, and he's still using the RSE pieces for hands and feet; is that, disregarding Leaping/Winged Boots, ideal?

I'm using Kingdom Bandana right now, and don't see anything good with which to replace it until AF (not counting Emperor Hairpin). Am I overlooking something here? And how long are Martial Slacks supposed to last?

Also, could some people pelase list gear choices for BCNM 40s? I plan to do a few of those when I get here.

    Thanks in advance.

I would go with the centurions for everything except the gloves, there go for RSE. At 34 you can switch out to bastokan or republic for the legs and feet, which are really nice.

Also, if you don't mind cloaks (Personally I hate them, not to mention they clash with my current setups looks), there is a combat casters cloak at 40 which is pretty snazzy.

My current setup at 50 is..

    Hawkers - L30
    War Bow +1 -L50
    Scorp. Arrows -L40
Centurions Visor (Yeah, outdated. But, oh well. AF hat or emp pin soon) - L30
    Ranger's necklace -L14
    Brigadine -L45 (Replaced Iron scale)
    2 Drone earrings -L35
    2 Carpace rings +1 -L45
RK Belt -L50 (Replaced merc captains belt)
    Bastokan Cuisses -L34
    Bastokan Greaves -L34
    Nomads Mantle -L24
    Custom Gloves -L27

You'll notice a good portion of the gear is from the 30's.
I'd like to pick up an emp pin for leveling ninja & thief, but it's really not worth the money involved for ranger.

Edit: Fixed RK belt level, wings -> Drone earrings.

At 30 I had centurion scale mail, centurion leggings, custom boots, and custom gloves. Hume RSE gloves and boots are really good for a RNG.

My BCNM40 gear is what I'm wearing currently and you can view it in my signature. Only difference is for BCNM40 I use a Battle Bow +1 and Scorpion Arrows instead of a gun.
      Woodworking: 60
      Bonecraft: 63
      BCNM40 78/85 x_x
Record holder on Worm's Turn: 6 minutes 19 seconds.

Greysenn that dose'nt sound like that good of gear for a lvl 50. I'm only lvl 24Ranger/32Ninja and I already own 2 hawkers(cant use them yet) I use Power Bow+1 Silver arrows a lvl 22 gun with Bullets
        Head Emp's Hairpin
        Neck Rangers Necklace
Earrings 2 beetle earrings+1 but I bought a Genin last night
Body I will use the centurions when 30
hands centurions is ok but at 38 I will be buying the mages cuffs
Rings Beetle+1 till the next +1 rings
        back Nomads mantle
waist I bought the Mrs.Cpt.Belt for when i get to 30
        Legs Martial Slacks
        Feet leaping boots
and how do you say Emp's Hair pin isnt worth the money involved for Ranger? meh. Good luck to all Rangers out there

You must not know your gear very well then.
Only improvements outside of +1 series gear I can make is an emp hairpin, leaping boots (Which are not always better than bastokan), mage cuffs (Which don't exist on our server, and even if they did, RSE is more useful in my case.)

I've got a musketeer & silver bullets bagged. I oull them out for skilling up, showing off, and some timed events, but they're too impractically expensive to use normally. I pretty much cried when I saw how fast I chewed through a 10k stack.

I can easily says emp pin isn't worth it unless you're just rolling in cash. In fact, it should be the 2nd to last upgrade you get, before leaping boots vs cost effectiveness. For 300k I won't miss 1.5 Racc... seeing that you won't be able to tell the difference without a parse. Money is better spent on an Ebow. Now the, pin -is- worth it for thf sneak/trick, and ninja evasion. It shows up noticeably there.

Edit: Ok, I forgot peacock charm & striders Those would be handy, but pretty low on the list atm

the only improvements grey can make is have drone earrings and emperor pin. For rng, emperor pin is a super luxury to have. Nice to have, necessary? Absolutely not. Having 3 less agi doesn't make you gimp in any sort of way. His carapace +1s (which are really rare btw) are the best for his level. I had to go with horn rings till 55 because i couldn't find any carapace rings nor +1s.

aside from that, the rest of the armor upgrades should be all AF till you start getting War stuff. (70 gears)

So rng AF is really good to actually use in battle? I've been hearing that other job's AF is not all that great, and I kinda assumed that applied to all AF.
btw: carapace rings are better than sniper rings?

p.s. I realize these questions are pretty noobish...I'm a lvl 27 THF and planning on goin RNG at 30.
thanks for your replies in advance.
              I RNG 75 I WAR 37 I NIN 38 I SAM 50 I Woodworking 92+2

Guess I need to edit that. They are drones :/ Oh well. Thats what happens when you get into a hurry

Ranger AF definitely has some good pieces to it in terms of usefulness, although I wouldn't use all of it all the times. The body and boots are probably the main "wear all the time" pieces.

The hat is so so, but there really isn't anything better for the head at the time. If the rapid shot increase happens even remotely frequently, its mucho better. Legs and gloves are mostly useful for the ability enhances.

Snipers give at worst, the same Racc bonus as the updated +1 rings at the time (Horn.) The +7 Racc on the carpace is better than the snipers, and equal to the +1 snipes. The only real downside to wearing ranger rings is... it gimps your melee accuracy (-acc. Although, with the +acc traits we get, it's not a painful to your hit rate as one might expect it to be.) So basicly.. snipers are better for melee with the rangers being the exception of the rule.

Sniper's also aren't worth the money, atleast on my server. 400k for one sniper ring versus 10k for a horn ring +1 giving the same +racc... hmm what to do what to do... Plus, sniper rings gimp your already gimptastic defense. >.>

I think emp hairpin is VERY good for rng/nin because of +10 eva.
that +10 really goes a long way to helping you keep blink up when you pull hate.

I didn't realize there were RNGs that had a hard time getting Emp. Hairpin, Leaping Boots, Hawker's Knife, or even a set of +1 gear. Yes, having only a couple +1 items doesn't make much a difference but when you got nearly an entire equipment setup with it boy does it make a difference.

My setup around 30 if I can remember right was this:

                      Hawker's Knife +1
Giant Bow +1 (or is Power Bow +1, which ever it is you get a 30)
Emperor's Hairpin (Only took me 3hrs hunting VE at lv. 30, yes it can be killed at lv. 30 I was pissed at people telling me it can't be done that early and I'd really have to buff myself up to do it. Wasted a Meat Mithkabob for a fight that lasted a whole 8 seconds.)
Ranger's Necklace (I can understand here if someone doesn't have Peacock Charm, hunting Argus is terrible )
                      2x Drone Earrings
                      2x Horn Rings +1
                      Custom Boots
                      Custom Gloves
Custom Vest (Just for fun, Defense doesn't matter a huge deal to me. Especially only 5 difference in defense not very noticable)
                      Merc. Capt. Belt
                      Nomad Mantle +1
                      Silver Arrows

My setup now isn't to different from that, at lv. 40-45 I swapped out the RSE Body for Brigadine +1, used 2 Carapace Rings +1, Battle Bow +1, and Scorpion Arrows (Which I had a mule collecting, had a nice 2k of them to start with). At lv. 52 I swapped the belt for the Royal Knight's Belt +1 (didn't see the point of going +2 just for +1 Rng. Acc in areas I control, especially when price difference is almost 1 mil) along with the War Bow +1 and still currently building my gear at lv. 54 looks like I need to do a few more NM hunts and a few BCNM fights and I'll be getting my next planned gear set.

I'll agree though many items that are +1 they arn't worth getting if it's only 1 and that's all you are planning to get, but if you are going for more then just 1 +1 item and configuring to balance out right then it's more then worth it.

I think emp hairpin is VERY good for rng/nin because of +10 eva.
Maybe it helps around the level that you get it, but Rangers horrible evasion nerf it soon thereafter against anything you might happen to hunt for xp. Most of the time nowadays xp mobs don't hit me it's because of parry. They occasionally whiff, but it's extremely rare.

Emp hairpin is rediulously camped on bahamut unfortunately. I've got ~8 hours camping him, and I've only seen him show up once.

                        Hawkers +1 800k, down from 1.2 mil
                        Nomads Mantle +1 320k steady

If you can pull that much cash in for gear at 30, more power to you.
