  • Hate control, i suck at it =(

Heres the deal. I left yhaotor jungle as a underequiped rng
to hopefully return with the great equipment.
I like too think suceeded in my task but a new problem has arisen.

Before in the jungle i could use arrow after arrow and be fairly safe from pulling the hate from the tank/s, i was a damage dealer but i was doing similar damage too a DRG for example.
normal ranged attack would do about 40-50 damage
    WS would do about 90-100
    barrage about 200 if lucky
my accuracy was terrible, i was lucky if i hit 3 times in a row against IT mobs.

Anyway i went and got myself some nice equipment, this i would like too think of as above average equipment for a ranger at my lvl. since i got my new equip my damage output has increased dramaticly.
    normal ranged attack 70-80 damage
    WS = 150-160 damage
    barrage anywere between 200-400+ damage.

I was amazed at the damage i can pull off, my accuracy has risen to a point were missing is no longer regular thing. My tp raises very fast because of this and this leads too more WS.
But this is were the problem starts, i died 3 times in the space of one hour because i drew the hate from the tanks and got beaten too death. No matter what they do they can get it off me.
Luckily i was too amazed at how much damage i can pull of in such a short space of time to care about the huge loss in exp i received.

Anyway the question is how do i cause as much damage as possible without drawing too much hate?

Sub ninja and learn to blink tank until the tank can voke it off you

Or fire just enough arrows to not draw agro I know if i go all out there is no tank that can hold agro off me even with a good THF.

the key to being an effective rng is to have a good tank (and good PT setup in general). guage how effective your tank is and fight accordingly.
if your tank ain't too great, you should make the intervals between shots longer.

great to hear you took the time to improve your rng instead of playing it through gimped :D

and yeah, ninja sub is your best friend if you're being kicked around, but you might miss the extra damage war sub gives.

I did pretty much the same thing as u.... got to 30 with decent eqip and decided to get good equip I got all the best I could think of besides emp hairpin atm and that one is coming up (u can see my gear in link in sig please comment if I miss anything besides the +1 mantle and emp hairpin) and I decided to go nin sub.

when I got back to jungle I hit about 9/10 on mandys and 7/10 on gobs (all IT) and much harder... havent died yet as I noticed it fast and har blink up but u really have to think of how many arrows u put out and as the others say take it really slow the first couple of fights to meassure your tank then u can unload when u know how much he can hold

The other day was PTing in set RNG PT and we were going for chain #5 on a Peryton. So of course I go all out then plan to run to PLD for cover... well, this thing somehow ate through my blink so fast, then hit me with Triple Attack WS for almost all my HP. Paladin did invincible but it still attacked me... :dead:

I suggest leveling NIN sub too, blink has saved me more times than I can count. Also because who doesn't love to Sidewinder, Barrage, Sidewider to keep up chains??? If you are doing nice damage, and decide to barrage... it's probably going to turn. Those levels are rough, hang in there, and maybe slow down arrow shots, haha

Shoot in bursts if you can, while you wait for provoke to recycle. Super easy to pull hate at that level.

Use barrage for killshots, that helps a lot too. (It's good for it at that level).

thanks for the great responses, much appreciated.
Just after i started the thread i hot a party with 2 pld
at times like that you realise just how good rng are with all the right equip and a decent party.
I worked on getting in the damge too finish the mob off rather than deal the damage at the start.
              This worked out great.

When the mob would reach just below half health i would unleash a WS with 300tp with the effect of berserk and a mithkabob i could pull off around 200 damage.
i would then use barrage for another 200+ damage (usually came out as around 400).
after that my Tp would be about 60-70 so a few more ranged/melee attack and i can do another WS for about 100 dmg.

The cycle would then continue, while waiting for the recharge time of sharpshot , berserk and barrage i had enough time too gain 200+ tp ready too cause some damage in the next fight.

Needless to say im loving it, and so are my party members =)

As a general rule, when you get agro, stop shooting unless its nearly dead. Also pay attention to the Voke timers on the tanks and remember that you can Blink tank as well as a Ninja pre-level 37 almost.

I remember one time in the second Jungle. I just hit 30 and had some very odd parties. It was one of those freak times when NOBODY was there, (8 total people in zone most of the night) so we had to cope with all sorts of odd combinations. The funny thing is, we never, despite what appeared to be AWFUL job combos, had slow exp.

I remember once we had something like WHM BLM RNG (me) and PLD PLD PLD. I've never had so much fun, as 1 PLD would tank, one would Berserk and one would rest. We were getting chain 5's because we had 3 shallow MP pools and they'd refill very quickly after and during battle. I went full tilt, arrow after arrow and there was always a voke ready for me or my Blink would handle it.

As if that wasn't odd enough, later there was a LACK of tanks. We ended up with WAR WHM WHM BLM BLM RNG (me). At first we tried having the WAR tank, but the exp was fairly slow. In the end I tanked as the RNG. I went full tilt again, as did the BLMs. Occasionally it'd bounce over to them but my next arrow always brought it back. The fact that the majority of our damage was ranged, and the Mandy was running around like a Turnip with its head cut off really reduced the total damage we took. We hit chain 5 almost every time as there was no lack of Mandys as we were the only group. It wasn't the best exp I've ever had but it was easily in the top 5-6.

well, I usually wait for a provoke and a flash before loosing a sidewinder. Timing the pld's provokes for your barrages/weaponskills might help.

Well your hate control is doing 2 very crucial things wrong for you. One your money is dwindling down after every arrow you shoot. And two your putting your self at risk by shooting those arrows. What I like to do is find a number of arrows to shoot, that is effective in battle but keeping the hate off me. If your ranger/ninja always have utesemi ready. Another solution could be lower your arrow damage by maybe using horn. Goodluck I hope this helped.

chances are your tank in that lvl sucks, kahzam is a cesspool. your going to have to gague your actions based upon the current tank
