  • First Job to lvl for RNG

I've been debating for a bit here... obviously RNG is not usually recommended to be a persons first Job... do to it's expense etc... So I'm looking for some recommendations as what might be a good job to lvl first with the idea of using it to finance RNG until RNG becomes high enough lvl to finance itself (hunting rams,NM's,etc)

Probably war. Whether you like the /war sj with the ranger or not, it is highly beneficial for leveling ninja if you're going that route. Well, at least if you like feeling useful. (not to mention being good every other melee job in the game)

Thf wouldn't be too bad either I suppose, I'm ending up leveling it now for farming, but it's pretty useless in a leveling party.

Whats wrong with it being your first ADV job? Just farm when you need gil its a normal part of being a RNG. I have seen a lot of posts lately about people seemingly want to save up like 3 trillion gil or something before they play RNG.

Well to elaborate on why I think you've been seeing alot of ppl asking advice on an initial job to lvl prior to RNG is simply that they realize that RNG is an expensive job.. if not the most (possibly NIN being the most) as many don't want to play RNG gimp style. I would be of this philosophy. I don't want to use cheap arrows and no be able to upgrade my equipment when it becomes available. I also don't want to lvl for one day then have to farm for 2-3... I'd rather save up a nice size nest egg of gil and be able to lvl continiously to say lvl 40-50 with RNG without the need to have to stop lvling to farm. In additition most ppl I've talked to say some jobs are much more effective at farming than others. for example most ppl say a job which can heal itself somehow (drk usig drain, pld curing,whm/rdm curing, brd regen, etc) with /thf are generally better than say MNK or WAR with sub /thf since they can kill until their hps become low and then /heal for however long it takes to restore hps. In other words standard melee are not effective farmers for the most part due to their inability to heal themselves to reduce downtime while farming.

SO to sum that all up... what alot of ppl are asking including myself... is there an effective job that they could lvl first to accumilate a sizable nest egg say... 3 trillion gil ... that would still be benificial later on after RNG becomes more self sustaining (able to kill Rams for example efficiently)

well you can't just ask "what is the best farming job" because as with everything else in this game, there are different jobs that shine during different level ranges. It also depends on what you want to be farming, because there are many different things to farm. Some of them take a heavy damage dealer to be most effective, others take aoe dmg to be most effective, etc, etc..

                crude example:
if you're fighting rams, IF you are high enough level that you can take a very significant amount of their hp in 1 sneak attack, then you will be very effective playing thf/mage or thf/rng. But if you don't do very much dmg with sneak attack, then the ram will take a big chunk out of your hp because without the power of sneak (which you can only use 1 time per battle) thf is a VERY wimpy solo char, and you would be better off with a job that does more consistent dmg at your level such as war or mnk.
if you're fighting elementals, any job that does physical dmg is at a distinct disadvantage and you would be better off with a job that does elemental dmg such as rdm or blm.

the point is, someone would need more specific details about what you plan to do to be able to help you out with a question like that.

Ok think I may have confused ppl so I'll restated it again... what I am looking for is a recommendation on what job to play inititially that might still be of use to me later in my Ranger career For example DRK might be an excellent farmer... but unfortunately DRK would have little value to RNG...

Now with the hunting of rams I wasn't planning to do that until I had lvled RNG to a lvl where I could easly farm them. As I had planned to use Ram's / Sheep / Mary as a primary method of farming to finance RNG to 75. I've read that a RNG needs to be around 50ish to easily solo Ram's so basically I just want to be able to save up enough gil to get RNG to 50 without having to take a break to farm. Lvl 1-50 straight...

Try 30ish. or even lower for rams. Barrage will cut them down in 1 volley, or about 4-5 regular shots.

Edit: The trick to rams is getting them dead before they do that crappy petrify, or even crappier great bleat.

                      A 45+ THF.

                      I Treasure Hunter II.

Most people say THII is over-rated, I say bring on the drops. An example is that I tried farming Tree Cuttings the other day. Friend got 1~2 an hour, I got 3~4. Flee is also a great addition, though any job 50+ can get it (though THF AF adds flee duration). THF AF adds +steal, which helps when farming.

However, unless you're /WHM, having to rest HP is a big pain in the ass.

only jobs that seem to be any real use for u when u lvl rng (besides a lvl15 thf for farming) is war and nin and nin aint to good to start with either as its atleast as expencive as rng to lvl to a place where u can farm with it..

so that pretty much leaves war then... for me thats not much of on aption as I'm a taru so... i got my blm to 40 before I decided to go rng... and well I atleast find a blm is really really bad at farming so havent done much farming there... I do just fine though... still miss the hairpin but other than that I'm quite proud of my grear (see my link for my gear) I wont tell u exactly how I get gil though and I hope u understand that..

If you want to farm elementals and rams before using RNG, then you could try RDM out. I was soloing them without much trouble at Lv. 33.
