Dagger has the highest rating for a ranger (I think a B-), and by lvl 28, you'll want....no, need an archer dagger. But you can use all three. I all ready have my sword skill over 80, and my dagger skill around 30, so I'm using an axe right now until I can lvl up my dagger more. It's nice to keep your options open, and the axe does quite a bit of damage.

If you want to become a Ranger class once you get to lvl 30 for the advance jobs, it's best to equip weapons/gear that helps to maximize your Ranger skills. A Ranger needs to be able to raise their TP fast enough so to uteralize their Bow skills. The best weapon for a Ranger to raise their TP fast is a dagger. Swords and Axes don't raise them fast enough, since Rangers have poor accuracy with melee weapons. You should also have Ninja sub so you can duel weld daggers. The best dagger at lower lvls is the Archers Knife, lvl 28, AGI +1, Range weapon Accuracy +10. Have 2 of those and you'll hardly miss and do a lot of damage with your bow. You'll also want to wear gear that raises your DEX and AGI.
There's a lot of swords and axes that a Ranger can use, but they're not effective for a Ranger in a PT. If you're soloing at times for gil farming or NM hunting, make sure you have NIN sub so you can evade more often and duel weld weapons that that do good damage and raise your TP fast. But remember that what ever weapon you use, the higher delay weapon is the default for delay.
Good luck. It's not easy being a Ranger, but you'll have fun with it.WAR 75/THF 37/NIN 38/RNG 49

I suggest you use, once you reach level 7, the 'Beestinger.' It's a dagger that does only 4 damage, but has a low delay of 150 and adds +1 AGI and +1 DEX. A fine weapon for building TP and augmenting your stats.
Many rangers use this dagger even over later selections like the knife. (8 dmg 195 delay.)~30 MNK~ ~15 THF~ ~33 RNG ~9 SAM~ ~8 DRK~ ~7 WHM~ ~6 BRD~

Use Archer's Knife until extremely high levels, where there is a rare/ex axe that has better ranged-attack augmenting stats. I forget the stats specifically, but if I can lure a japanese friend of mine and his lvl 75 ranger out of his mog house, I will try to copy them down...MNK: 31 RNG:70 WAR:35 SAM:10 NIN:35

Nice. Does this mean you have like 1 Agi + 20 AGI = So if you equip this it will give you like 21 Agi as per the calculation of the other forum. Delay is very good also.
In other words, 20 AGI = 10 Ranged Acc, but 10 Ranged Acc does not = 20 AGI.
correct me if I'm wrongAlright.... who farted?
