  • Trouble with fighting worms.

I fire an arrow at the worm at maximum distance, and once it hits or misses the worm gets off a stone as i'm running away from it and it always hits me. THen as i enter the hitting zone and fire another arrow, the worm will cast stone on me again as i am standing there aiming at it. what am i doing wrong? how do i make it so stone doesn't hit me?

also, where do i solo worms at level 10? la theine?

The whole exploitation of worms was fixed in the last patch, you aren't doing anything wrong, you now just have a better chance of surviving by standing there and taking it until you kill it or it kills you. As for a good lvl 10 place for worms I'm not sure. Level 19 can still solo t-vt worms in Kor. tunnel though. Hope that helps.

What are you talking about? That's a stupid way to do it...

You just have to be clever about it. Shoot an arrow, hope the worm doesn't cast bind as you run back, wait for him to start casting again (he will start to cast, but it won't finish because you're out of his range), run back in, shoot him, run back out, repeat. It takes time to get the timing down, but you'll get used to it. And you may not win every fight, but the 200 xp you do get makes up for the wasted arrows.

I could've sworn I was able to do it after the new patch. It's been awhile since I've soloed worms before, but I'm damn sure it was after the patch.

I can solo IT worms with magic from far away but it takes forever.. Drain - run away... aspir.. run away.. drain.. run.. etc. thats boring..

Usually the spells rape you more than the worm just whacking you. get up close to it and melee it while you are shooting arrows. it will whack you most of the time instead of binding/stoneII etc..

I believe that soloing worms still "works;" it's just totally inefficient, from what I can see while attempting to solo maze makers in Shakhrami.

You simply cannot avoid it if they cast Stone I, the cast time is too short. You can avoid the other spells, but you have to jump back into shooting range right after the spell fails (in the recast wait window) in order to get a safe shot off.

So it goes something like this.. I shoot and run, then worm casts:

              Stone I - I eat it
Rasp, Bind - I make it out of range, duck back in, fire off a shot
Stonega - I make it out of range, but sometimes (if I think they casted Rasp/Bind) I end up ducking back into range just in time for Stonega to cast. I eat Stonega... not good.

And it's not always easy to see what spell was casted, due to the number of people camping MMs in that area. Also, for some reason, sometimes the spell cast info doesn't come up in the log.

Anyway, once you get one safe shot off, you have to weave in and out and bait the worm into casting (without shooting), then jump back and fire a shot in the recast window.

And on top of all of that, you can't really sit and heal like you could before. The MMs lose aggro lock quite easily.

I've soloed a lot of worms as a RDM, both with nukes and with the piddling bow skill we get. With Ranger being one of the advanced classes I want to try out, I'm thinking Rng/Rdm might be ideal for soloing these, the main reason being Silence. This assumes that subbed enfeeble skills are high enough to get it to stick, but I imagine they'd drop quickly in that case. Whm should work too, but the enfeeble skill would be even lower.

Nothing terribly new here, I know, but having done the worm-spell-radius dance repeatedly I can't stress enough how much easier it is to just silence the dang things.

Has anyone solo worms with a whm or rdm but to use Barstone/ra?? Maybe Barstone can ease the pain of the spells to a point where you just shoot from max range.

Pfft, just let the stupid worms hit you. They aren't going to kill you. My times in Korroloka from 18-23 just soloing without a whm sub have been fine and only on a few occasions have I gotten in trouble with a worm.
"So there was this pun making contest right. The guy said allright, you write down ten puns and send them in and we'll see if you can win. Well I wrote them all down and waited until the final day of the contest to see if any of my ten puns would win. But no pun in-ten-did."

Thats stupid man...let them just hit you. The object of soloing is getting 200+ exp. When i was in the maze...and this is after the patch i believe i was still soloing the worms. You find your maximum range...fire one he starts to cast u run away. Now some times the spell keeps casting, and then u just run back and shoot him again/repeat. This works most of the time...but hell its better than getting beat to hell by a stupid worm. If you want to get hit by a worm as a ranger or blm just dont solo them and go to a good place for parties. You would have a better chance then...

Barstone/ra doesn't reduce the dmg but it reduce the chance of taking a full hit. I usually take about 90+ dmg from stone II and 70+ from stonega from the wicky wick worms. With barstonera sometimes I get like 30~50 for stoneII and 30~40 for stonega, 0~12 for stone and a little bit more resistance to Rasp.

Following a bit of tongyang's leveling guide, I headed back to Shakhrami at 17 for some worm soloing. Here's what I noticed.

While all the shoot-and-dodge problems I noted earlier are still present, they really don't matter. I can stand in bow range (but outside of the worm's melee and TP attack range) and go toe-to-toe with any worm in the place, regardless of what it cons. Unless it chain casts Stonega, I will take it down with 75% life to spare. This nets me 120-200 exp, without a chain.

If I'm lucky and it doesn't cast Stonega at all, I can immediately claim another worm and get an exp chain. Worst case scenario so far is that it casts 2-3 Stonegas; this is rare, but I still have a reasonable amount of HP to spare.

                              Ok ...

I got my RNG job a while back, and began to level it. I got it to level 11 and then got burnt out so I took a break for about a month and a half. This break began middle-late December. I just came back recently (4 days ago or so) and decided I'd try to solo some worms in Shak Maze. I had no knowledge of a "worm fix" in a patch, so I proceeded unknowingly.

The result? 200 EXP per worm, little to no damage sustained... easiest EXP Farm of my entire FFXI career. I am as of today level 18. I solo'd worms in the Maze from 12-18 with no troubles whatsoever. Worst case scenario I'd get bind cast on me from a worm that popped and linked with the one I was fighting -- but even then I could easily escape in time. I'm not entirely sure what all these posts regarding a "worm fix" are about, but I've had no trouble doing so. At level 18 I went to Valkurum to try some party action, but I've become completely spoiled from soloing the worms. I am now going to proceed to Korollaka Tunnel or Qufim and continue my solo worm-farm-fest.

To all the nay-sayers out there: It is still completely possible AND plausible. Get the timing down and you've nothing to fear .... unless you have a fear of enormous splurges of EXP.

                              Hope this helps
