  • Mother of gawd!!! XD

Kay, I'm gonna try this again and hopefully avoid any flame wars because of people's personal opinions... cause we seem to get butt-hurt a bit too easily on these boards and start retaliating...

Back before the NA release, I was rather interested in eventually becoming a Ranger. I read through a bunch of these posts and blah blah. After eventually changing my mind and starting with Monk, the "Me want Ranger" idea came back... so I spent a bit o time with a Thief working on carpentry and archery.

Now that I'm finally able to get adv. jobs (^^) I figured I'd get started....

Sweet Zombie Jeebus am I in love with this class! (at least for right now)

The range on attacks, the damage dealt, the widescan... it's a whole different game compared to Monk (which I'm slightly getting bored with).

ANYWAYS I guess the whole point is that I find this class (though it's gonna light a match to the fundage) fawking awesome. These first four levels (after which I had to force myself to stop so I could go to bed) were the fastest beginning levels gained I've had so far.

Is there anyone else that just recently started this class and had a joy-induced-aneurism?
    Alright.... who farted?

      Yep.

Like you, I was a MNK for my first 30 levels. I don't know if there's a more boring class in the game, at least among the starting six. No Provoke, no sneak attack, etc. The only fun I was really having was interrupting Bomb Tosses with Shoulder Tackles, but that's not even a unique ability.

Then I started subbing my THF, and got him to 13 before I got frustrated and set him aside for a while. In my opinion, sub-15 THF's are just incredibly crappy warriors. (Once I got him to level 15, though, holy cow, what a difference.)

But I'm never changing from Ranger. I love shooting things from a distance. I love Wide Scan. I love doing incredible amounts of damage. It's really a lot of fun so far.

And now that I have the Hunter's Longbow (I just hit level 12), it should be even more fun.

        *flail*

Yeah, I was pretty damn bored with mah THF... haven't reached 15 with it yet cause I found myself drooling on the keyboard out of sheer boredom... but if that 15 mark is a milestone (what with Treasure Hunter and Sneak Attack) I might hafta force myself to get at least that far.

I hear ya about the MNK thing... the only thing that made me keep on with it was the fair damage I did in parties...but meh. I'll get back to it if I decide to eventually get SAM and level that a bunch.

I'm resisting the urge to travel all the way from Sarutabaruta to Ronfaure to werk on worms... since I'm gonna wanna hit the worms in Shakrami here in a few levels.... bah, maybe I'll just bite the bullet and do some travelling.

One thing that pisses me off royally though...

***AND IF ANYONE CAN GIVE ME SOME INFO AS TO WHY THIS HAPPENS***

...is when I'm getting ready to fire off an arrow, occasionally she'll forget about the arrow and go back to attack position with the message

"You move and interrupt your aim"

Now this would make sense if I were moving, but I'm holding perfectly still. Now you'll prolly say,

"Silly ANoM, you're too far from the mob! move in a little closer!"

That's all well and good, but how come if I keep hitting my ranged attack macro over and over, it'll eventually fire off... even from the same distance... as if I need to persuade my character to actually let it fly?

Same thing with me being RIGHT ON the mob... I'll be like three feet (scale) from the mob, and she'll occasionally forget that she needs to shoot, and just goes back to her normal or attack position. Sometimes it'll take me 3-4 times hitting the ranged macro before she quits acting like a retard and actually performs the command.

        Any help would be appreciated

Edit: I'm starting to wonder if this "movement" issue is due to the analog controller I'm using... Me thinks I'll hit Wal-Mart on my lunch break and get a brand-spankin' new one that doesn't have such lax analog sticks...

If it's something other than that, please let me know 'cause it's driving me insane.
        Alright.... who farted?

Yeah this annoyed me for a while too ~_^ it's caused because you start shooting before you've stopped moving - (this might not _actually_ be the case, but if you don't stop moving for at least half a second, the game will still think you were moving).
So to prevent it, make sure you're stood completely still before you shoot.

Another thing - if you're shooting and the monster moves - don't move at all - even if they run behind you you'll still be able to pull off your shot.

awesome, will try here in a bit...

            Next question...

I'm reading all these posts about sniping worms, and how you can hit them and step back so they dont cast on you. I've been trying for a while now, and when I"m finally in range to shoot an arrow, I always get hit. I make sure that I'm not locked on so I can run away quickly, and that I'm as far away as I can be. It seems that the worm has a greater range on their magic than I do with my bow, because there have been instances where I'll start moving in slowly, trying to fire one off, and they'll start casting while they're still "out of range" to me.

Any input would again be greatly appreciated^^

ok this is how it's done:

find your worm, go reallly far away from it, lock on, try to shoot - it'll tell you you're too far away - move closer - repeat until you do shoot (this way you'll be as far away from the monster as possible). as soon as you've shot (or slightly before if you can time it right) run back approx. 2-3 footsteps. the worm shouldn't be able to cast on you - but the first cast is the hardest to avoid - sometimes it's best just to take it (but then it might be bind and O_o erk).

anyway, after the initial shot, immediately run back in and shoot again, once you've shot, move out and wait for it to cast.. a couple of seconds after it's started casting, run back in and shoot - it'll have cancelled it's spell by then.
              aand repeat.

              a couple of pointers:
eventually you'll be able to time everything perfectly, it just takes time, so don't worry if you make mistakes at first.
the max range you can shoot at (as far as i can remember) is when in the radar, the monster's dot is _just_ outside your radar circle - eventually you'll know you're the exact distance just by looking at the radar.

so use radar to guage your distance accurately (both for knowing if you can shoot, and knowing you're far enough away for it not to hit you). and you'll learn the timing.

              just takes practice

Ditto here! I've been having trouble not being cast on - the thing that clinched it for me was:

"a couple of seconds after it's started casting, run back in and shoot - it'll have cancelled it's spell by then"

Now I don't get raped by the worms quite so badly. :D

Yeah, worms' spell recharge time is really long, so if you run back in immediately after it's failed it's cast you'll be able to run in, shoot and run back out before it starts casting again ^^.

BLM's can use this strategy too, apparently.

The sucky thing about this method is when you get binded too far away and not being able to shoot (bind seems to have a bit of a longer range too >_<) and then the worm disconnects from the battle (worm's name turns from red back to yellow - i.e. unclaimed) and then it sinks back into the ground >_< this happens quite often unfortunately.

if your worm's name turns back to yellow in the middle of a fight, make sure you shoot at him as soon as possible, so he doesn't run away.

I always love when I try to run back, get bind cast on me, and end up out of range from the worm. I'm too far to shoot/cast on it, but apparently I'm not too far away for the worm to cast on me. Gotta love Stonega and StoneII, boy those are fun spells.

Kay I've been getting a little practice in at La Theine (100-170xp per mob^^) but this part here is what pissed me off the most... wake-up-the-neighbors pissed. Throw-your-controller-like-a-five-year-old pissed... didn't really throw stuff, but yeah pretty pissed.

More practice, more arrows... I now have two other mithras stationed in other cities whoring around making extra money to send to my ranger... damn expensive-ass jobclass...
