How come Elvaans are not best rangers?

I just have a little comment which is a little bit confusing for me. When I started playing FFXI I really wanted to be a ranger because I like bows and stuff therefore I choose the Elvaan because I thought he would be the best ranger because in all movies or other games, Elfs are the best with bows right.

For instance. LORD OF THE RINGS. Elfs all have bows and good at it.

Baldurs Gate, Elfs are the best with the bows
Neverwinter Nights, same thing.

Therefore why did they put a CAT to be the best ranger. OK Cats are really fast so I would say they evade more but you would think that Elvaans would be better with bows right.

Any comments as to why Square/Enix made this decision?:confused:

Well, they're Elvaan, not Elves. These creatures have a different mythology in different regions - just makes sense.

I'm fairly sure "Japanese Elves" are tall and one with spirit. Note the difference in the ears as well; the Elvaan do not have Tolkien ears.

Plus, if you base the Elvaan off Tolkien elves, they'd be the uber class hands down. They had to balance them somehow.

You're just thinking with a limited mindset: Elves don't exist, so there is no Elf "rules" that need to be applied. Even Tolkien's elves were altered from traditional evles before that, and now Tolkien elves are considered "traditional" by a Western audience.

Regardless, I like the Elvaan, and they still make competant rangers if played correctly.

On paper mithra, but choose whatever race you want, and boost the stats accordingly with equipment/rings/earings, etc.

i think taru can be the best they have basically the same stats as mithra. So I think its a tie between Taru and Mithra...ranger would be perfect if only the af didnt suck cause there isnt much armor better then af

You need to delete the bookmark for whatever site you're getting your info from, becuase Mithra and Taru are nothing alike.

Dex has nothing to do with bows, its all AGI -_-~

AGI only has a difference of 4. I only made dex bold to call attention to where the largest gap was. I was trying to save time by not pointing out the obvious, but oh well. Taru excells at magic, and RNG/WAR has zero mp, so their main adv is cut out. Their damage will constitantly be lower and because of lower dex they won'r crit as much. If both are wearing AF you'll have less slots to load up on +agi, str, or hp equip to just try and catch up to the mithra, let alone try to pass one.

Also, Tarus have 200 less HP at level 70 Ranger compared to the Mithra (and I believe Hume). Obviously, I have no experience with end-game gameplay, but 200 HP seems like a huge difference, and a matter of life and death in certain situations.

Still, it's clear that any race can be a ranger if they want to. And that's the beauty of this game

As somebody said at the start of the thread, you can balance out stats with equipment...

Taru make good rangers imo, but they may not be the 'best' min maxers out there. I would put them behind Mithra and above the other races, based purely on the all powerful AGI (which they are ALMOST as good as mithra at).

Besides, their low STR isn't that big a deal, if you decide to use guns. To my knowledge, guns damage is constant, and only Marksmanship affects the damage. Since the main damage you will do in high end (at least for big fights) will typically be guns, they won't suffer THAT bad.

The only thing that is 'bad' per se is the lower hp. But in the end, even that 200 hp isn't gonna save you if the Tank can't get the agro off of you cuz of the insane damage you put out. If a monster turns around and one hits a Taru with 800 damage, I don't think the Mithra is gonna be much better off with only 200 more ^^. They will just survive 3 seconds longer than a taru would.

I personally think there is no "Best" race for ranger. There are too many factors... equipment, subjob, playstyle, and party composition. A Taru RNG/SAM may not put out as much damage (as other races), but a Taru RNG/WHM will be much better support healer, due to increased MP.

I am a Taru RNG, and I personally think I do fine for myself. You still will do more damage than the other classes (assuming you have your good equipment) in terms of DPS, correct? So don't think a Taru RNG is 'gimped'. They aren't necissarily the statistically 'best' RNG, but they will still kick arse in a good PT ^^

But then the PLD uses Invinceability and all hate goes to him and the Mithra lives =O.
