  • Just started as a ranger - questions:

Just started as RNG today and got up to level 8. Arrows don't seem to be a huge problem...at least for now.

    Questions:

1.) Any general tips on leveling until I can start getting into parties at level 10+? Ranged weapons seem to suffer from the same problem as two-handed melee weapons - each miss HURTs.

2.) Crossbows or bows? As a Bastoker, I picked up a crossbow because bolts seemed to be more available in the AH/stores. Good choice? Bad choice?

3.) Assuming I stick to crossbows, what types of bolts should I use at what levels? I'm using regular Crossbow Bolts (which I believe you can make with Ash Lumber + Wind crystal). At what level should I move to something better?

4.) What exactly does Scavenge do?

Here is a tip i learned from experience, spend all your money on items that improve accuracy give str and agi. Ranger is a very expensive job, im lvl 12 ranger, bout Hunter Long bow today.....only lvl 12 bow but it cost me 30k. Also i would suggest using bows instead of crossbows. Scavanger mostly finds stuff you can use for crafting.

crossbows suck, you should use (long)bows.
if you so desire, you can solo sucessfully pretty much from lv1-23 on worms, getting mad exp.

I have a couple questions too.

        1. Where are the worms and what levels are they good for ? I know where some are but not all.

        2. How far could 500k gil get me as a ranger/thief?

Well judging from experience....if you are a really good ranger and you spend your gil on your equipment to always have the best plus, plus spend gil on food to those stat boots it should last you enough to about lvl 30.......but thats just my guess, at it took me 45k to get from 1-12.

            Am I doing something wrong?

Granted, it is a bit early (level 9 at the moment).

Against decent/even monsters, I do noticeably better damage than a comparable level warrior, monk etc per hit.

However, I partied for the first time today, and while taking on tough monsters, I actually do the *same* amount of damage as a warrior per hit (and actually less over time, considering the hefty ranged attack delay) I'm using a longbow with bone arrows, archery skill maxed for current level.

So when, if ever, does a ranger start to do significantly more damage?

You'll get there, buwa hahahaha. What you do is train in seclusion for 23 levels on worms, that way, no one can speak of PTing with a low level ranger (Low levels = baaaaaaaad) and only speak of the uber ownage that is 23+ (30+ to be precise). At level 30, you get ransachi which fires 4 arrows at a time (according to faq on this board) every 10 minutes, then you can use daring arrow and all that fun stuff. But for me, I was fighting Tough Mobs as a level 12 with a red mage, and he was hitting with his Burning Blade for less than I was with a normal arrow. =P And Eagle Eye Shot is 3x the damage of a normal arrow. (I was hitting for about 36-50 damage with each arrow, he used burning blade for 16 -.-) The mobs were on me like glue =)

Hi, first post, but I just had to ask something.

I decided I wanted to be a Ranger or a WHM long ago, and I finally decided on Ranger once i got in game. I did all my homework, and i was happy to see I would be fairly unique for the most part, due to the (un) popularity of the job.

However, now that alot of the NA playerbase is getting to 30, I am seeing a HUGE glut of rangers crop up (at least on Lakshmi), and a good amount of them are giving the job a bad name. I have been in groups with rangers that just seemed to not know how to play the game, even after 40 some odd levels.

I know that the Ranger job is silly easy to complete, which is probably why there is so many Rangers right now, but do you think they will stick? Or do you think Rangers will end up being a fairly common and popular NA job?

I've come to the conclusion long ago that anything requiring hard work, strategy, and money is never popular amongst the casual players.

I consider no member of this board a casual player.

I expect a massive Ranger drop. Just do a /sea all RNG and check the level gaps: A lot of newbies, and a lot of veterens; middle ground was sparse, at least when I searched.

Yah, i suspect when most of the players start finding out exactly how costly the job is, most will drop it and change to dragoon and drk and sam(with which there are WAY too many right now... on Pandamonium)

Yea there are too many drg and drk on seraph to. I was going to go drg but there were so many i had to pick something else. It turns out I like RNG better anyway.
