I really don't like this sort of advice, I want to be a ranger, and I'll do what it takes to be a good one (I have spent the past 2 days farming Ghelsba for cash with thief main)

The notion that you NEED to be rich, and have the best gear in order to be a ranger is one that needs to be stopped. It may make you much better, but it isn't necessary, and I wouldn't even advise it.

People should be able to be whatever class they like, and I do believe this was a HUGE design error on the part of SE. The main thing to remember is that this is a GAME, and a game is supposed to be fun, otherwise it's not worth playing. It's not fun for me to level up another class, so I won't.

Anyway, enough on my rant of having fun as opposed to being uber.

I've farmed 55k from Ghelsba in about 2 days, and I'm deciding what to spend it on weaponwise for my ranger. Right now I'm looking at either the Hunter's Longbow (lvl12) then the Power Longbow (lvl16) any recommendations from people who have used these two, or is there anything better?

Also, it seems ranger items are incredibly hard to come by, not just expensive (at least on my server) The Hunter's Longbow can't be bought in ANY city right now. There was one last night in San D'oria for 22k, but I didn't buy it, and someone else swooped on it.

Soooo...are there any rangers on Seraph server that frequent this board who have some old ranger gear they'd sell me, or does anyone have any recommendations on other ways of getting these items?

You do not have to be rich to be a RNG, that your correct. All you have to do is to complete the quest. However, if you do not wish to make a mockery of the class and give the people you pt with the impression that RNG is a worthless class, you need gil. Its pointless to lvl it without the gil, I have over a million gil and im still hesitant to lvl it. But hey, you can do whatever you wish it is your deciscion.

Please read my above statement. This game is about fun, I'm sorry if you haven't realized that yet.

Some people like a challenge when having fun. Just because it's easy doesn't mean that's it's fun. Thanfully, there is nothing that is extremely easy in FFXI. First, you complain about it being to expensive and now it's "all about fun". Of course you need skill to be a good ranger, but no matter how good you are it isn't going to make a difference with out dated equipement and no arrows because of a lack of gil.

EDIT:I'll just edit this post since I don't think your worth making another topic. Neither me nor anyone else ever said that you need to have the best equipment. We just pointed out that if your going to be a ranger, it's expensive. We didn't say go spend all your money on equipement or else you won't have fun. All we did is point this out and try and make suggestions on how to cut the cost back and play as a ranger. If you didn't want other peoples opinions then you shouldn't have posted.

Yes, I did complain about it being expensive, but I'm trying to not let that interfere with me having fun. I wanted to be a ranger, so I'll be one.

If some of you think I'm a "disgrace" or embarresment to rangers, because I don't run around with 200k boots tough ****. I like being a ranger and will be one despite the people who would try to stop me.

Yes you can do whatever you want. Just dont be sad when people decide to not group with you after finding out that you are using junks as equipments.

I know for sure I wont group a ranger that wouldn't use his bow, or a tank w/o armors.

Who says I use crap equipment, I'm currently almost lvl 12, and I'm using the best bow available on my server for my lvl.

Zidane, I appreciate the posts telling me how to cut back on costs, what I find asanine are things like the post telling me to get to lvl 50+ with another prof before I play a ranger. That's just stupid.

I'm farming a good 25k every few hours in ghelsba as a thief, I plan on having good gear, maybe not the best, but at 25k per day (I can't farm cash for more than a few hours) I think I should be able to at least afford some fairly good gear, and some high class bows.

I don't intend to go out and just try to level my ranger, anyone who actually read my entire posts would see that.

I do agree with you that someone told you to have lv. 50+ equipment on another job, but maybe that's just what he wanted to do. I know I'm not going to do that until after I level up my ranger all the way. Another thing, no one ever said that you use crap equipement. They were just stating that you can use crap equipement and suck if you want because you made it seem like you didn't care what kind of equipement you were using. Next time don't get mad so quick.

Any more questions, there is still a lot of stuff I don't know.

Dude you asked for advice and we are giving it. dont be upset because ranger isnt the happy go lucky job you thought it would be. ask any high level ranger and they will tell you the endless amounts of gil they have spent on arrows alone. sure you can "do what you want" and "have fun" but dont expect to get into any serious xp PT's once they see you are being skimpy with arrows or using level 1 arrows in Crawlers Nest.
As for saying my suggestion is "stupid" ROFL good luck levelling Ranger with no gil.

do what makes you happy, I love ranger and I'd be (trying to) level it even if I had little or no money.
fortunately I can afford it (for now at least) and I have every piece of equip (bar the Argos necklace) I could want at this level - because I farmed gil for hours because I wanted the best equip because I wanted to be a great ranger.

but to be at least a competant ranger you're gonna be spending lots of money on it, that's just a fact - it's the payoff for the damage you do - so you'll have to farm gil to feed the habbit, but if you love it enough, you'll do it.

Are you stupid or illiterate? I mean, did you have someone read part of my post to you? I have money, I'm getting more, I've stated that at least 3 times in this thread to no avail.

This needs to be locked. lol.:p

I think this is all he's trying to say. I need advice other than on gil and paying for equipment. Like which kind of enemies you shouldn't attack and some good spots for leveling.
Here's a tip. You can't hit Notorious Monsters with your ranged attack. Like King Behomoth for example. (I think that's what he is called). The big purple thing.

I had heard that Zidane but I heard it only applied to 50+ NM is that true or false?

I'm not sure. I just know it's the real big monsters. The one's that require alliances and stuff. It shouldn't make that big of a deal when deciding whether you want to be a ranger or not. I'm hoping they will change this in a patch though. Maybe it's because rangers are to good.:p
