  • About to give up on ranger

Yesterday I finally got my ranger class (NA player) after reaching lvl 30. I had been reading on rangers, and knew that there were heavy expenses involved, but I had no idea how bad it was..

I sold some of my thief gear in order to get money, and went out to buy some arrows...500 for the low level ones, not bad, but considering I do about 99 shots in 15 minutes it stacks up quickly.

Then I went to buy bullets, which are 5k for a stack of 99, I was a thief, and have done my best to make money, but in my total assets I have amassed maybe 50k in items/gil.

I tried to raise my crafting skill, but it costed me almost 7k to raise my boneworking skill to 1.

I have to say I'm incredibly dissapointed, and ready to give up on being a ranger. I don't want to level my thief anymore to make money, I was thief just to get to lvl 30.

If anyone has any advice on how to help me with my monetary problems, please tell me it is really unfair I can't play the class I want because people charge ridiculious amounts for crafted items.

Try logging. You can get a few hatchets and go to Ghelshba outpost in sandoria and get arrow wood which you can turn into arrows as well as obtain other valuable wood. Here's how to make arrows. You can also make the material for arrows.

Here's a link which will help alot. Trust me. http://www.ffxionline.com/forums/sho...399#post227399

Also go here to make your arrows.http://db.gamefaqs.com/computer/dosw...ld_recipes.txt

well - for starters you don't always need the most uptodate arrows if you can't afford them - i use lv14 arrows if i've run out of lv24 arrows, and it doesn't make a _massive_ difference

buy lv1 arrows from your local weapons shop, they should be 4gil per arrow (3gil with a bit of fame) that's 300gil per stack until you get to lv14, i don't think it's that bad at all.
lv14 arrows from the same shop should cost 7-8gil (although these arrows will only be sold depending on your country's standings in conquest)
in later levels though, you're looking at 2.5-3k per stack and then it will start to hurt :/

unfortunately, that's what ranger is - there's a price to pay for being the most damaging class, and that price is gil, and lots of it.

Message removed: it seems that I somehow posted my reply in the wrong topic...

On topic: For low-level arrows, the shop prices seems to be far better than the Auction prices...

Level 1 arrows: 3 gil (Windurst)
Level 7 arrows: 4 gil (Windurst)
Level 14 arrows: 8 gil (Selbina, 14 gil at S.D'Oria)
The sole thing that one possess throughout their entire life is hope.

Thanks for the replies, I'm starting to get past the scammers on my server at the AH and have cut down my costs severely for arrows.

However I still have the problem of no gun ammo, or ability to raise my gun skill, I read that crossbow is sort of like training for gun is this true, or should I just be shelling out these huge amounts?

I heard that the crossbow raises your marksmenship which determines cun accuracy. You can also make bullets but it's not as effective as making arrows.

Use the Long bow at low level, not guns. Guns suck and shouldn't be used till higher level. Plus, if your using 99 arrows in 15 minutes there's something wrong. You have a weapon ya know. Try using a first arrow to lure an enemy, then use your dagger to finish it off. While in a PT, try using range attack, dagger, range attack, dagger, and so forth. Take turns so you dont go broke.

                ^ that's great advice.
Guns are useless at low levels - if you want to raise the skill use crossbow, it uses marksmanship skill same as gun.
99 arrows in 15 mins is excessive. you should melee and shoot inbetween, as zandria said.
doing that will save you arrows (overall) as well as getting your TP up faster.

Alright next question, what does the term "HQ" mean in reference to the ranger guide on this forum as in HQ longbow/gun.

I haven't played the game yet and know like nill about the game, but I'd guess it stands for High Quality.

Yeah it does stand for High Quality, it just means the bow is (usually) so much superior to the original. (HQ items are created when a normal item is crafted under certain conditions).

I have a lv40 HQ longbow now which is:
                      D55 Delay524 Lv40 Range Acc.+2, Range Atk.+15
                      the original is:
                      D54 Delay540 Lv40

As you can see, on the original there's no Range acc/atk stats on it as there is on the HQ - which is why the HQ is so superior, they're well worth the extra money (if you've got it) imo.

I would recommend levelling another class in order to get your assets high before levelling ranger. You need to be RICH in order to PT with this job effectively. By the time you get another job to 50+, you SHOULD have money to spare, so then you can start levelling ranger. A friend says they spend 10k per PT on arrows @ level 20, do be prepared...

                          As far as battling:
Bring high level arrows for weapon skills
lower / cheaper level arrows just to attack with
Use sharpshot or whatever the level 1 ability is to increase accuracy as much as you can.
Switch to the high level arrows right before you do weaponskill.

Battle should go something like this: Pull with arrow,
                          melee attack
                          arrow
                          melee attack
                          arrow
                          etc.

eek! i meant i bought that bow haha, i have like lv5 woodwork, and 0 for everything else...
hehe, i was just comparing the one i bought to the original none-HQ item.
There's certain conditions to have a higher chance of guilding a HQ item, full moon, which day it is etc... but I have nowhere near enough info on guilding to be any real help sorry
