so, i either want to be PLD or DRK.. i 'm a level 12 WAR right now.

i'm a total noob to this mmo, and i was wondering-- so do i just play as a war until i can become PLD? do i have to do a quest to become PLD? should i just have only war as main until then? or have a sub at all? sorry, im totally new.

First off you need to know that PLD is a tank and DRK is strictly a damage dealer. Doing damage is an important aspect of playing Paladin because you need to do damage to keep mobs focused on you, but a PLD will never be able be on equal footing with a true damage dealer.

That aside, each you need to do a quest for each new job you want to unlock, and you need to be on a Level 30+ main job to accept these quests (though not all of them are soloable at Level 30.) In the case of PLD, the quest is part of a series - you need to complete two other quests before it. These quests are (in order): A Squire's Test, A Squire's Test II and A Knight's Test. They are soloable at 30 but only if you have some form of Sneak and Invisible (probably Silent Oils and Prism Powders) to avoid aggro.

As for sub jobs, you should unlock your sub job as soon as possible upon reaching Level 18. The most important PLD sub job until Lv.74 is WAR, so you're going to need to level WAR to 37 (I find it preferable to take it to 37 before starting PLD, so you can "quit" WAR for good and not have to go back to it after reaching Lv.60 PLD.) However, you're also going to need a sub job for WAR past Level 18 - MNK is the best choice out of 6 starting jobs.

In a nutshell, here's what you'll do:
WAR to 18 -> MNK to 18 -> Unlock Sub Job -> WAR/MNK to 37 -> PLD/WAR to 75. Or...
MNK to 18 -> Finish taking WAR to 18 -> Unlock Sub Job -> WAR/MNK to 37 -> PLD/WAR to 75.

You'll also need Ninja as a sub job at Lv.75 PLD, and it's an important sub job for several other jobs as well.

PLD and DRK are advanced jobs that are unlockable via quest when you reach level 30 on any job. So if you don't want to take warrior to 30 then you don't have to, however WAR is the basic main sub for both of those jobs. Yes! You need a subjob, otherwise people will consider you possible RMT (Real Money Trader) after level 20 if you don't have one.

I happened to spot a subless BRD33 in Garlaige, and that was my first thought ... really, there's no advantage to being without a sub, it gives a boost to HP, MP, stats, and allows use of JA and spells from the sub.

I had taken a break from FFXI for awhile and when I came back we had some new members in our linkshell. All of them seemed to be pretty cool and talkative except this one THF. The THF was level 22 with no subjob. So I asked the ls leader's boyfriend who the THF was, and he replied that he had done a promy run with the ls leader so she allowed him into the shell. I sent the guy a tell asking if he needed the SJ items to which he didn't respond. I also asked again in the linkshell and he didn't respond. When the LS leader got on, I asked her about the THF. By this time the THF revealed that he was in a level sync party and he was really a level 27THF with no subjob lmao. She eventually kicked him from the linkshell for suspicion of being RMT. By this time he was 30THF lmao.

In a nutshell, here's what you'll do:
WAR to 18 -> MNK to 18 -> Unlock Sub Job -> WAR/MNK to 37 -> PLD/WAR to 75. Or...
MNK to 18 -> Finish taking WAR to 18 -> Unlock Sub Job -> WAR/MNK to 37 -> PLD/WAR to 75.

or even better:

WAR to 18 -> Unlock Sub Jobs -> MNK to 18-> etc
or
MNK to 18 -> Unlock Sub Jobs -> WAR rest of the way to 18 -> etc

Unlocking Sub Jobs as soon as possible is always helpful. The extra Job Abilities you get from your sub jobs will help you out. You'll probably need help getting the Magicked Skull, but you should get the Damselfly Worm and Crab Apron while leveling there. If you are lucky enough to come across very helpful people in your party they might help you with it.

I would say go like this:

Level Thf to 18 first, (that way u become a DD after lv30 with sneak attk and dont forget to always use Great Axe on your warrior, and later on u can farm with your pld/thf with treasure hunter.)
Then unlock sub jobs and take war to 37.
then take RDM to 37 (one of the best subs for pld and u will need it)
take pld to 75
and finally take NIN to 37 and ur done


btw DRK is the very opposite of the pld job, drk is STR and no def, PLD is Absolute defense but no attk.

No. /THF at 30 isn't good enough to justify being useless before 30. If he/she's going to level only one sub job to use on WAR on his way to 37 it should be /MNK.

RDM is not a necessity. He most certainly does not need to level it BEFORE doing PLD.

btw DRK is the very opposite of the pld job, drk is STR and no def, PLD is Absolute defense but no attk.

Also false, as DRK does have some defense and PLD does have some offense. The all defense, no offense mentality for PLDs is seriously flawed and leads to sub-par performance.

I agree with others, instead of leveling to 30 and swapping to PLD then you might as well level war all the way to 37 and then swap to PLD/or Drk and you don't need to then go back to leveling war after.

SO war 18 > SJ MNK 18> WAR 37 > PLD/DRK 75

yes i know pld has some damage and drk has some def, but is a difference from ground to the sky. and war is not useless at those lvls as hes the only starting job that has the defense bonus trait and as you already know, almost every1 can tank at those lvls, so its not that big of a deal having mnk as sub just until u reach war 37 and then what, that job will be useless for ever, while subbing thf gives u evasion bonus at lv 20 war and after u reach lv37 ur going to continue using treasure hunter forever when ur farming.

Not to mention THF is a complete pain in the ass to level up at those levels, especially without a SJ or any marksmanship/throwing/archery skill.

you r like most of the ppl that plays the game the easiest way, and on MMORPG games you play to be a better player everyday, not to do the easy stuff, easy stuff will make you a one more normal player, not one of the best, everything thats worth doing or having in this game, has a hard way for earning.

and nowdays thf is just easy as hell to lv up because of the treasure thing they put, you always have a potion to use and wont have torest like before.

THF is hardly necessary as a sub for any job, is the least desirable DD job from levels 1-30 and is one of the worst solo jobs from 1-10 or whenever you start partying. The Evasion Bonus trait is also trash for tanking compared to Monk's Counter attacks, and they're both the same level.

There's a difference between playing on easy mode and going out of your way to increase the games difficulty artificially by gimping yourself.
