  • Re: Midgame

That's something I've been meaning to look into and ask some PLDs about. The Sipahi set in general seems pretty good for a PLD in those levels. You prolly won't ever see an increase in shielding rate from all the +AGI, but maybe it'll make you parry an extra hit every hour or... something. Regardless, the +STR is always welcome.

For some reason I was definitely getting hit harder while wearing it. Granted, I was on those Crawlers in the Aydeewa underground place, but with AF it ranged from 80-120, whereas in Sipah it was 120-140 sometimes.

Vorpal Blade was ok. 240 and 270 were the highest. Just wish that the RDM was more on point. PT wasn't that bad, but had NO damage dealers. Seriously.

PLD RDM WHM SMN NIN PUP

      I shit you not.

But whatever. I'll post a screenshot of my gear, but with Vorpal, I have a total of +15 STR in addition to my base of 55. Wish I could tank in that gear. It even has +HP on a few pieces, but I just can't shake that fact that for some reason, i lose only 26 DEF and I start getting Whalloped?

Maybe DEF Tiers out at points?

Armando, Lmnop! One of you knows the answer to that!

Oh yeah, I died twice. Fuck that party.

A PLD who's not "in his shell," a NIN, which should be focusing on DD at those levels, and a PUP, which is partial DD + support. Interesting party. I bet the SMN and RDM never tossed you a single cure. Meanwhile, you were trying not to cure yourself too much because you knew you had a ridiculous amount of support. Am I sounding about right? I'm trying to justify you managing to die twice. Oh ya -- incinerate. That helps too.

You have me pegged wrong as "the guy with smart answers." I learn and forget the damage formulas every week. Always forget stuff and Armando has to go through it with me, nice and slow.

But +26 defense -- by equipping that stuff, you're basically giving every mob you fight a pair of O kote and some change. DDs freak out over +26 attack. If attack is even half as effective for monsters, that's still something. Lastly, how long were you in the stuff? If it only lasted ~2 mobs, then those could've been higher level or something.

In other news, I just hiccuped while eating cereal and milk came out of my nose.

Rena, I'm guessing you were using Sushi? Well, I can't give you straight answer, but there are a few things I know that help explain it.
          - Some people have been claiming mob PDIF has been messed up as of the last patch.
          - Yes, PDIF is divided into tiers. It's always been.
          - Mobs have a minimum PDIF that is higher than 0. This means that when your Defense gets high, the mob's minimum PDIF stays the same, and only its max PDIF keeps going down.

Let's ignore #1 for now. When your Defense gets high enough, we run into situation #3, and this is what we perceive as Defense's "diminishing returns." Let me pull some numbers out of my ass to show what I mean. Let's say that with 400 Defense, the game calculates the mob's min and max PDIF to be from 0.3 to 0.9. However, let's say the mob's minimum PDIF is 0.5. Any PDIF rolls below 0.5 will become 0.5, giving you a range of 0.5 to 0.9. Now let's say you add a certain amount of Defense, and the mob's new PDIF according to the formulas should be 0.2 to 0.8. However, because of the minimum, it's really 0.5 to 0.8. Only the max is going down, so the improvement in damage reduction isn't as big as it should be. However, this relationship also holds backwards - going from 0.5-0.8 to 0.5-0.9 isn't as big of an improvement for the mob as it would normally be either.

Because of that, when your Defense is high, dropping 26 Defense won't cause the damage you take to change as much compared to dropping 26 Defense when you're not in that high Defense range (e.g. eating sushi.)

Bottom line: Defense is valuable when eating Sushi, but more expendable when eating Defense food.

I was eatting Bream Sushi, which I figured would help because of the VIT, but apparently I was wrong.

            Shame though, I really like that food. Back to Tacos for me!! ; ;

You could just not stay in Sipahi gear. The STR on it is kinda "meh."

I only Macro it in and out. But those few hits I have it on I notice that I get hit a LOT harder. With damage scaling like that, I suppose there is a difference in the little bonuses that gear gives us..

Well, so it's only been 10 levels, but I feel like I've come a long way.

                  Well. Maybe I haven't, but I don't care, it's what I feel!

I've learned a lot. Died a lot. Lost hate a few times. Did some very fun things with Vorpal Blade. Farmed a bit. And I can say that I like farming as PLD more than RDM.

                  Oh.

And I've done Vorpal Blade in EXP for 341, 361 and 371. Each time I was on Raptors, (and I think I was 59 at the time.)

But Yeah, after experimenting with Sipahi gear, it's mostly trash. All I keep on me is the Turban, and I macro that in for WSs. I used to use the Ryl.Kgt. Breeches for WSs also, but I decided it wasn't that important to me and I'd rather have the 40k in my pocket (doesn't matter tho.. My Fishing Mules are richer than I am ; ; ).

The Hauby is a huge help, and I'm glad to see I can keep it with me pretty much forever. I'm not sure if it's worth 480k, but based on equivalent gear in other slots, I'd say it is.

Well Midgame definitely starts now, and who knows what the hell else I'll be tanking!?!? Defender doesn't help much. I eat Shallops, so life is good right now.

In other news, My Clothcraft is 58. Once I get it to 60, I can finally say EFF YOU CLOTHCRAFT (after I get my glasses. I mean.. I DID do all the work to get to 60, I might as well have a parting gift.)

Any more gear to look forward to?

I would suggest Vermillion Cloak as an optional body gear, only if you got most of essential things for PLD needed at that level. I personally don't have it, but I had party with a JP PLD in a level 66 party who swap in Vermillion Cloak between battles. I was the puller for that party (as a WAR), and I did not even have to look at his mp for timing the pull, very impressive.

Vermillion Cloak is great but given that it locks you out of Haubergeon and any headgear, most people can't afford to pay 900k to squeeze a few more points of MP in between fights. If you can borrow one or something it's great, but otherwise...

Jelly Ring is certainly something to look forward to. 5% less damage taken on a ring slot is priceless (and free, too.) Especially when you want to cut down on damage taken when eating sushi.

Amemet Mantle is the cheapest 10 Attack money can buy.

Save the Queen is a fun/interesting/vastly underrated alternative to Espadon +1.

Hercules's Ring is relatively cheap +3 enmity for your ring slot.
