Ugh, you're right. The overhealing is really annoying. Granted I'm only 29 now, but sometimes I like to get hit and let my HP go down a little so I can cure II it for more and keep more hate, but just as I'm about to I get a cure II from a mage or even a big ol' cure III dropped on me. :c It makes it harder.

If you're having problems with that, give your mages a number that you don't want them curing above. I know healers should know you generate a good chunk of hate through cures, but if there's one thing I've learned in this game, it's never assume too much.
