You make partying with friends sound like a thing of last resort...

Probably the best advice to anyone asking "Should I level ____?" is "Don't how you would like it--why don't try try it and find out?"

What I meant was that you couldn't just get a regular merit party was worst case scenario. Ideally, a static party of friends would probably be more enjoyable. But if the OP had that as an option, the question of "will folks invite me" wouldn't really be so pressing.

So, all in all, if you like paladin (it's important to like the job) you can see according to these replies, that's it is worth it since we always need a GOOD tank.

Furthermore, a good paladin will make friends while partying, and that will probably help you get invites.

As for parties that burn trough mobs, a paladin / nin or even /war with a lot of DD gear can still hold his own, while having some mp to heal. Some paladin even tank as /nin, but that's for advanced gameplay, high level and situational fights.

In brief, a tank is needed, and if you're good a it, it's even better, so yes PLD is worth it in my opinion.
