Outside of exp parties, there are plenty of good thing to be said about PLD + NIN tag team as well.

Last weekend, my LS was farming subligars in Phomiuna Aqueducts (Lv.40 cap area). Since I was low on defense food, I decided to play second fiddle to my friend's NIN. He main tanks most mobs, but had me tank the Fomor NIN's, RNG's, MNK's, and any pet types.

Other than on those mobs I main tanked, I was a (great? lol) back up tank. I used dorado sushi, switched in some DD gear, kept up berserk whenever possible, and Flash every chance I get. That way, whenever he got in trouble, I can take the mob from him with Cure III and a Shield Bash while he recasted shadows. Or, if he's in a lot of trouble, I'd just keep the mob with a provoke and cancel berserk.

That way, we got the benefit of NIN tanking (less MP used = less down time), and still get the security of PLD tanking (if all else failed, go Invincible!).

Hey, sometimes a weird party setup works too
There's a Trio of THF, DRG, and WHM in my LS who leveled to Lv.75 together in their party of three... WHM was the DD and DRG was the main healer, while the THF ... tanked.

      Is that weird enough?

I guess you had a WHM for Erase? Try tanking fomors as PLD after they use Aegis Chasm on you. It really sucks I tell you.

Re: Have I mentioned lately how much I love this job?

Would someone come raise me from Turkey Comatose? A whole weekend of eating turkey can put down any tank it seems.

As for the whole NIN vs PLD arguement, I think the NIN and I could've dual tanked gobs without any problem but the party insisted on doing Pugs. I didn't mind the Party Leader asking me to be a DD at first but the choice of mobs was more for a PLD tank. I think in all the times I've played, I've only seen one NIN survive a screwdriver.

Before I became a more balanced character instead of just a career mage, I used to prefer PLDs for the mere fact it was safer if I needed to do a Bene or DS+Curaga. I was never a snob about the type of tanks I had in my parties but a really good NIN tank is very rare to find. Not to mention I often got bored while partying with a NIN tank.

As for trolls like ev00rs, I'm not going to let him bring down my enthusiasm towards the job that's kept me safe on my mage jobs. I love the job, everyone that posts in this forum loves the job and I think that's all that matters.

Also would like to add that NIN became a Tank because there seems to be a bunch of spoiled rotten RDM's in the mid levels who think that a four person Refresh cycle (PLD, RDM, WHM, BLM) is way too tough.[/COLOR]
Any RDM who can't hold down a 4 person refresh cycle (I'd say five even) needs to be taken out behind the woodshed and put out of their misery. I mean, four person isn't even remotely challenging, and since I've been the refresh for the tank party in Dynamis for the past 5 or so months even a six person refresh cycle has lost its challenge.

<.< Sorry if that was a little harsh, but imcompetent RDMs are one of my biggest pet peeves about the game.

True, but for a ninja it's pretty much instant death if they lose shadows while schism is on them. PLD can at least survive it.

But yeah, don't ever fight fomors without a *competent* WHM *with Erase*, no matter what your tank is. You'll regret it.

Re: Have I mentioned lately how much I love this job?

Quick little anecdote about "not provoking" off a ninja before I go off to get owned by angry monsters.

My static died recently, so I decided to lvl Paladin on my own time. I got into a party with a few people, and at the last minute they decided to invite a Ninja, with the plan that I would be the trick bitch for our Samurai and the Ninja would main tank (Without asking me, even. Awesome.) I honestly think we were a bit low for Aydeewa Diremites(60-61), but that's where the party wanted to go. First fight takes forever because they decided to not pull hate off of me with SATA until the Samurai had enough TP for a weaponskill. Kay, no big deal. I can hold my own pretty well, even against criticals for 350+ damage and triple attack. WS happens, Ninja throws out provoke, and starts spinning his wheel and everything's going fine. I toss a Flash for him while he casts so he doesn't get interrupted, etc.

After fight #1 the Diremites decided they weren't going to play nice. I provoked, and held hate like I was supposed to. WS again, Ninja has hate. Diremite whips out his AoE and this is where the fun starts. His shadows drop, and he gets critted. I toss out a Flash, then he gets nailed with another AoE. I pressed my "Oh shi-!" button and took over for the rest of the fight. Nothing bad happened, and I even tossed a cure at our Ninja just to make sure he was doing alright. This is where I got pissed off. My party got angry with me (Except for the ninja, interestingly enough) because I was making the White Mage spend more MP than she wanted to. The Ninja ended up dropping and getting replaced with a Red Mage. My punishment for this was the White Mage refusing to Haste me or even cast Poisona, instead forcing the Red Mage to, while she just occasionally bombed me with cure 4. Bottom line, make sure to let people know what the hell they're getting into and please be sure to exercise common sense when choosing a tank. One party strategy does not fit for all situations, and our above comment claiming otherwise is complete bull perpetuated by ignorant people who listen to everything their "high lvl friends" tell them. I'm off to get knocked around, have a wonderful day.

Re: Have I mentioned lately how much I love this job?

That sucks dirtyclown. If I was that ninja, though, I would've thanked you for saving my ass. Seriously, though, it goes to show you how degraded our player population is. People wanting the easy way. That's just a crime and a crying shame in my eyes right now.

Back when I first started FFXI in beta, no one complained about 2k an hour exp. Everyone was just happy to fight something. Now that the game has been around for awhile, all I see is a lot of elitism in this game and a lot of "measuring ones sex organs" Where is the magic of teamwork, cooperation and being satisfied merely that you get to play the game with other players? I'm a RDM and I'm freaking happy with just 3-4k an hour. I don't mind getting more. I could care less if I get less (provided I'm not in party with a bunch of retards) The fact that I just log in and enjoy myself when possible makes it worthwhile.

But I hate how the players in the game become so. It's definitely a far cry from how it was before.

I hear you on this. That's pretty much how I look at it too. Not that I don't enjoy those kickass parties that tear through the exp, but I don't denigrate the ones that don't.

Paladin was my first main job, and I loved it like my own child (if you know, I had a child who wore armor and liked taking a beating for the team). As a Red Mage I absolutely love having a Paladin tank (provided they play well), but it's sad how rarely I see them these days.

I'm so glad you're enjoying yourself, OP. Rock on.^^

Re: Have I mentioned lately how much I love this job?

Aeni, it's not just at the higher levels that this happens. Since becoming a lowbie again, I've seen people griping about how slow exp is from 10-30. I think it was on my MNK that I had a BLM complaining that we weren't making 10k exp an hour in the dunes. On WHM in the Jungles, I had one party that would continue to pull even when every mage was depleted of MP from the overzealous pulling of mobs too strong for the party. Like Aeni, I'm happiest in a party that gets along well with each other while playing a job I love without worrying how much exp I get.

Dirty Clown, it sucks that your party treated you that way. It sounds to me like you handled what could've been a chaotic moment with a cool head and steady nerves. I wish I could've saved my NIN the way you did but the Screwdriver happened so quickly that no one saw it coming. That WHM's behaviour after you saved the day was uncalled for. I think you did a great job and no one can take that away from you.

Re: Have I mentioned lately how much I love this job?

That sucks dirtyclown, I had almost the exact same experiance with leveling war/mnk in the crawler's nest.

My friend wanted to push his warrior to level 37 (@36) he scraps a party together, and asks if I have any level 37ish jobs. I blow the dust off my Gaxe, grab some tanking gear off the AH (+20ish vit, mwahahahaa), and head on over, he's taru war/nin and main tank, with best of the best DD/tank gear, I'm mithra war/mnk with an underleveled Gaxe and pretty good tank gear.

the party starts up and things go pretty well, sometimes his shadows go down and he has a hard time getting them back up, so I tank during that time and he can normally get hate off me well. Then we hit a bad streak of luck, where the crawlers just started butchering him, constantly almost killing him by poison breath + double attack/crits, so I tossed out boost+provoke+dodge+defender and canceled my berserk and tanked for the rest of the fight taking relatively little damage (hey, I'm not a ninja tank) next few fights go pretty much the same way so we decide that I'll just tank. After awhile, whm starts complaining that I'm using too much of his mp despite the fights going much smoother and easier, and the puller is out on long pulls so he has plenty of time to get back mp. My friend and I share hate, he starts the fight tanking and once shadows are depleted and recast timer on utsu is too long, I take over tanking. then the whm refuses to cast poisona on me, not like I would /heal inbetween pulls, but I don't like loosing 50+hp because the puller is gone on long pulls, at that level that's alot of hp to loose because the whm is being finicky.

Long story short, I tanked darn well and got 12+ levels out of Gaxe and about 8 in Marksmanship! Woohoo!

You have the right to remain silent, anything you say can and will be misqouted and then used against you.

I don't have a big ego, it just has a large mouth.

Re: Have I mentioned lately how much I love this job?

In Dunes when level 10 ~ 20 characters only require 3k ~ 4k to gain next level, complaining about not getting 10k exp per hour is just retarded

At level 60, when alot of DD got their powerful nice WS (Raging Rush, Tachi: Yukikaze, Guillotine, Howling Fist...), very powerful gear and weapon (like Haubergeon), low defense mob in ToAU, the DD are the monsters, and the mobs are the prey.

Level 60 is the prime time of PLD: Full PLD AF at level 60, Rampart at level 62.

Meanwhile, level 60 NIN tank is squeezing out every ounce of their skill and resource in order to keep: Ni version of elemental wheel effectiveness goes down at level 60, effect of evasion goes down, Arhat set is not available until level 63 ~ 64, increase of power of mob and DD... Not every NIN tank at that level are ready for those sudden changes, they may need parties after parties to adjust their tanking style.

The 1st choice of tank is pretty straght forward to me from level 60 ~ 65.

I just had a fantastic party at 65-66 with me on NIN main atnking and a pld/nin with DD setup backup, the xp was flowing very nicely and the pld/nin made made up for the my weaknesses as a nin, by flashing the mob when shadows were down and curing me and taking hate when i was having a rough time, this pld was throwing out consistant 400ish dmg swift blades for a big SC with our thf, very good pt and a good show of pld and nin complimenting each other instead of arguing :p.

if you're ever in a situation where WHM stops doing X action for you because of Y event, I'd advise you leave or kick WHM. no exp at all is better than putting up with a control-freak mage.
