  • The Gluttony sword

I've gone through 3 levels with this sword on for exp parties, used it for everything I've done from coffer key runs to farming, and I've got something I'd like to say about it. This sword sucks. +7 vit is no excuse to keep using it over a Dragvandil or a Bastard Sword. I've switched over to Dragvandil full time now, and I've yet to notice any change in damage taken. What do you all think about the Gluttony Sword? For a long time I've viewed it as a standard piece of equipment, but have we been misled? I can see how the vit mods might make it very desirable for some people, but the magic is gone for me. It's been reduced to a fake piece of junk. D:

    It's easily the strongest sword at L57 (D44, 8.95DPS), however, at 60 you can use a Bastard Sword (D43, 9.77DPS) or a Bastard Sword +1 (D44, 10.23DPS).

Dragvandil has a slightly higher DPS than Gluttony (9.09), but I believe Gluttony still outdamage is thanks to its higher damage per hit.

Vit doesn't do anything noticeable enough for exp parties so just go for the highest damage.

Dragvandil's got an advantage over Gluttony in the form of it's added effect as well. It procs often enough to actually be useful, and it's quite potent. As far as base damage goes, Gluttony wins, but it loses out in every other category.

Probably depends on your tanking style. I wouldn't say it sucks. I used it for a long time, probably until I got to Espadon +1 and did fine.

Do you have to have it? I am not sure if you have to have any specific gear to play and do well.

One thing to remember is that if you are low on vit it is a good sword and can open up other slots for some more offensive options. Saying something 'sucks' because it doesn't work as well as something else for you is a close minded way of playing in my opinion.

I used it up until Espadon +1, and the only problem I had with it was it's slow attack speed. It's nice to have that extra bit of hate from landing your hits even if they're low in damage. The Gluttony Sword just didn't swing fast enough for me to land a decent amount of hits with my Elvaan accuracy.

            Re: The Gluttony sword

I'll be honest with you. Ever since I actually started paying attention to the DMG/sec ratio's, I've been disillusioned with it. Its Delay is nothing short of colossal, at 295 that makes it slower than every kind of one-handed weapon but tomahawks and mauls (which aren't exactly known for their DMG/sec, either.) Besides, it's not actually stronger than anything. T.M. Espadon +1, which I would consider an economical (which is not to be confused with sub-par) sword, easily worth a meager 50k, has a higher DMG/sec (9.16) while also having Attack +12 in its favor. T.M. Espadon +2, which is more expensive but probably still cheaper than Gluttony on most servers, has a great DMG/sec of 9.71, which no sword will match 'til Bastard Sword (and even then it's a toss-up if you're just going to buy the NQ, since NQ Bastard Sword's 9.77, but T.M. Espadon +2 has that +12 Attack going for it.) Hell, even Wise Wizard's Anelace has a better DMG/sec ratio (9.03) than Gluttony Sword.

My opinion? I don't use Gluttony Sword unless I feel I'm really taking a beating. Out with the old and in with the new, I say - if I can improve my damage for a marginal reduction in damage mitigation, why not? It's not like VIT+7 is going to make a tremendous difference, like you said. However...I'm equally disappointed in Dragvandil. If its DMG/sec were higher, I wouldn't mind using it, but it's a mere 9.09, and its added effect doesn't kick in that much even on TW/EP mobs, while being totally useless in an EXP party. I'd say the ideal weapon progression would be T.M. Espadon +2 at 52 and Bastard Sword +1 at 60 if you don't mind shelling out 1 mill for it.

Speaking of swords with deceiving DMG/sec ratios, Save the Queen caught my eye. While normally considered a junk sword, its DMG/sec ratio is 10.00, which few swords pre-Joyeuse/Company Sword exceed. The only swords that exceed its DMG/sec are Bastard Sword +1 (12.23) and Espadon +1 (12.27, Attack +7.) However, if it's true that the latent is activated during Cover, that means you could get a free +20 Acc for your Vorpal Blades ever 3 minutes. At the very least, it would make it an interesting toy. Plus, it just looks really damned good.

In other words, yes, I would have to agree with you - the Gluttony Sword really wasn't all it was hyped up to be, sorta like Greed Scimitar and Lust Dagger were for THFs. If its Delay weren't so incredibly high, it'd be another story.

              Re: The Gluttony sword

I just hit lvl 57 last night and swapped from Wise Wizard Anelace to Gluttony Sword mid-party. I tried it on a couple of mobs and wasn't overly impressed, but I think that that was because there were only two melees in the party (pt: PLD, THF, SMN, BLM, RDM, WHM) and the two of us were skillchaining. The TP build-up was so much slower, so I ended up swapping back to the Anelace. I'm guessing I might have have stuck with it if I hadn't been involved in the skillchains (maybe).

I might have to consider the Espadon +2 if that's actually better than the Anelace, but I bet it's damn expensive on Ragnarok.

Slower weapons gain more TP per hit so no, TP build was not much slower.

It certainly felt like it though...maybe the +12 (or +13?) ATK of the Anelace made the difference, I dunno, or maybe I didn't give it enough time.

With Gluttony + food I'm at +30 Vit, 90 total. I'm not saying the sword sucks because it doesn't work as well for me as some other swords, I'm saying it sucks because it isn't nearly all it's made out to be. Back in the day, before I ever leveled Paladin, the Gluttony sword was the greatest status symbol for a Paladin other than his AF. It was like "wow, he has a Gluttony sword. That's THE Paladin sword!" because back then nobody had a Joytoy, there was no such thing as a Justice sword, and no English speaking players had hit 75 yet. I feel like a kid who just discovered that the world really is filled with terrible people who do terrible things for their own gain.

I hate to even bring this up, but 4chan doesn't make you feel that way every single day?

Anyways, the sword serves its purpose well enough. It's obvious Vitality does next to nothing for Paladins anyways, so you might as well use it to free up other slots, like your rings, where you might be able to fit something more useful. Maybe one day, when Vitality does more than just stop my bones from aching in the morning, it'll be a lot more useful.

shush, or /b-tards will find us.

Anywho, I've spoken with a lot of PLDs on my server, Pheonix, about the gluttony sword. I'm a budding PLD, only 49 and I have no urge to shell out almost 1 mil on a sword that affects all my other stats to boost another one. But, I'm a strange breed of person. I've heard it's either great or not worth it. I believe it's all a personal choice. I could understand if a Taru PLD had one, but a Galka PLD shouldn't really bother, unless they felt justified in showing off. I may kill the NM for the sword and then sell it off. Personally, I'll use the Espadon + 1. And also, I seem to be the only person on Pheonix who cares that Save the Queen is a good sword for use.
