  • When can a paladin tank marid/chigoe?

I am really wanting to go and make a party to hunt marid/chigoe, but I am hearing conflicting reports on when you can do this. I've heard you can do this lvl 66-68, but the other day I had a lvl 68 pld tell me how he got ripped to shreds by the marid/chigoe, I didn't ask him what his party setup was, so I don't know.

So any advise on how to do this would be great, what I'm planning on, is:

    Drg/war (me)
    Thf/whatever
    Pld/war
    Blm/whatever
    Whm/whatever
    Bard or Red mage

I've heard that one tier III nuke from a blm will one shot the chigoe. The thief is there to help keep hate on the pld, whm keeps us alive, and the red mage spams tp gaining spells on the marid, helps the blm kill the chigoe if he needs any help, and does whatever else is needed.

Just another quick question, is it best to draw out the fight with the marid in order get the most out of killing chigoe? Or is it better to kill the marid as relatively quickly as possible, while killing chigoe more on the side?

I figure the answer will be different from party to party, but just a kind of general, what's the best way to kill the marid and chain 'em would be great ^^

You have the right to remain silent, anything you say can and will be misqouted and then used against you.

I don't have a big ego, it just has a large mouth.

My static PLD and I were fighting those for great exp at lvl 68. The Marids do a special attack that will take buffs from the tank so make sure your RDM or BRD keep up with dispel.
Also if you don't like fighting those here is a site I use to exp.

Re: When can a paladin tank marid/chigoe?

My static party and I just started on these this week and it's turned out *really* well so far.

It was a little rough in the beginning admittedly though. I had 2 deaths in a row before we got things straightened out and setup right. 17k xps later though and no more deaths.

When we started I was level 66 with about 4k tnl. We'd been fighting in Bibiki and Mamook for the last few levels and so I'd grown used to damage being pretty light honestly. Since I'm part of the skillchain my usual gear includes a Life Belt and a Mermans Gorget and I still occasionally need to use Berserk to make sure I can cure enough.

Or rather I did. Marids were a nice wakeup call. Their usual hits were around 150 or so and they could double attack and had higher damage special attacks. That's not unsurvivable though since the Marids attack very slowly. It was enough to thow me back to using Defender 24/7 though which is something I haven't had to do since level 51 and the Tigers in Uleguerance Range.

If that was the extent of the Marids abilities the fights would be cakewalks. It's when the Chigoes come out that things get dicey though. The Chigoes hit reasonably hard - around 40 or so per hit - but very very fast. Basically you can forget about self-curing while a Chigoe is around (though Flash still works fine). If the Marid chooses to double attack and throw a damaging special at you with a Chigoe out you can easily drop into the red with no way to pull yourself out of it.

Both of my early deaths were due to chigoe mismanagement. The solution was fairly simple though. One of the 2 Black Mages we have was tasked with killing them ASAP. A Tier 3 Nuke will generally 1 shot them so it's not too hard to pull off. If you have a Bard/Rdm/2nd Blm, they can also Sleep the Chigoes to buy some time if need be. For backup I also stopped using Shield Bash for hate holding and kept it in reserve as an emergency Chigoe killing too. Very handy for when one pops and the Black Mages are resting to regain mp. Weapon Skills are also handy for that too, especially since with the Marids tough hide it's nice to save up a decent Spirit's Within as a starting hate tool.

As for the Marid's themselves, don't worry about drawing the fight out, their very tough and decently magic resistant. The fight will be drawn out all on it's own whether you like the notion or not. If you kill the Chigoes as they pop you'll generally wind up dropping the Marid itself in good time for Chain #5. They you can rest back up to full and kill the next one.

My "Marid Gear" that I switched into for last night looks like this:

Weapon: Espadon+1 (note: Gluttony Sword might not be a bad idea since you do want to turtle a bit with these guys).
      Shield: TK Shield +1
      Ammo: Bibiki Seashell
      Head: Gallant Coronet
      Neck: Shield Torque
      Earring: Drone Earring x2
      Body: Gallant Surcoat
      Hands: Gallant Gauntlets
      Left Ring: Hercules Ring
      Right Ring: Chrysoberyl Ring
      Back: Knightly Mantle
      Waist: Warrior's Belt +1
      Legs: Gallant Breeches
      Feet: Gallant Leggings

      Food: Tavnazian Tacos
Drinks: Yagudo Drinks x12 (for 2.5 hrs)
