You sure? I always seem to remember it functioning as a second Provoke after I got it. I haven't seen anything too clear saying that it decreases hate gained other than that merit ability, unless the hate lost is due to the secondary effect of the Paladin taking less damage. In any case, that's an endgame trait and has no place in a guide targeted at lower level players.

So this is an assumption and not something you read from SE?
I think that Guardian refers to the amount of hate lost from taking damage while
Sentinel is up, not that using it or having it up cause you to lose hate. So Sentinel
doesn't cause you to lose hate, but if you have the new trait you will lose less hate
while it is active?
I am pretty sure that I have used Sentinel and it caused the mob to turn back to me.
I understood it as this... I'll put it into a format my puny brain can handle...
I'll use points because it's simple.
PLD (any) gets hit by mob Hate loss: 12 points.
------------------------------------------------------------------ PLD uses Sentinel Mob: omg I hates you. Hate gain: 50 points. PLD gets hit by mob Hate Loss: 10 points. (Hate loss during Sentinel is reduced.)
------------------------------------------------------------------ PLD with trait merited uses Sentinel Mob: omg I hates you. Hate gain: 50 points. PLD gets hit by mob Hate Loss: 8 points. (Hate loss during Sentinel is further reduced.)
Disclaimer: I have no farking idea how S-E set up Enmity, I just set up this model to attempt to explain how I saw it
Grudge Sword Level 39, Damage 26 Delay 240 Enmity +1. I prefer this over the Honor Sword's +2 bonus to VIT and MND. In conjunction with a High Breath mantle, you've got +6 Enmity
isnt +6 enmity overkill? i would think the VIT alone would make the +1 enmity kinda meh after u have +5 already. just another of my 2 gil
Double Post Edited:
ok i stopped and looked and was wondering how was using the tropicalles being cheaps?
Early on Fish Mithkabobs and Boiled/Steamed crab is good. I personally use Shallops Tropicale because I'm a cheap ass.
Later on, you'd want to use Tavnazian Tacos, they have a higher cap than Shallops but they hurt the wallet so much more.
Cap and stat info gathered from Somepage.
Here's some food stats for no reason.
Fish Mithkabobs
* Dexterity +1
* Vitality +2
* Mind -1
* Defense +25%(Cap: 90@360 Base Defense)
Seems to me that the crab is good till 203 def (maybe more if u use HQ then u should switch to the tropicale. Too bad the tropicale doesnt stack but it gives more def for longer adds more vit the fish. anbd some MP
IMO the tropicale seems better then fish till tacos

I used the Honor Sword. Both swords will probably work. Really depends on your play
style.
Regarding enmity, I really think you can never have too much. (maybe some cases
when you need to lose hate for SATA or to bounce hate against really hard hitting HNM
but I would rather still have the enmity and just ease up on job abilities and curing, etc...)
Having said this though, I don't think that not having the +1 enmity from the Grudge
Sword will necessarily make or break you.
Also, I used shallops until tacos. Actually I think I would carry a few fishkabobs with
me to start the party. If I felt it was party that would last 3 hours I would use the
shallops after. Also, it depended on if I thought I was going to get killed

Overkill? Nay sir, there is no such thing. Except possibly in a dual tank situation where you're sharing hate with another person, you can never have too much enmity. The Honor Sword is good if you feel you don't have enough VIT, but as Davitron mentioned, it all depends on your tanking style.

"Being cheap" is because Tropicale only costs about 6-8k compared to the 80k+ that Tacos are, which is another option open to me at the moment foodwise. Sorry if that was at all confusing. I tried out Seafood Stew last night and was quite pleased with it. It's more expensive than Tropicale, but I didn't manage to hit the cap on defense, which I've been doing lately with the Tropicale. I think I'll be using that for now until I go completely insane and start throwing away gil on Tacos.

Depends what u call throwing away gil. some people may think that the good of the pt>money. imo 40k for sushi is expensive >.> i cant wait for taco /sarcasm.....
anyway i feel ur pain as the food prices go up and up and up
The advantage of the taco is that when you do die, you don't lose your whole 12k and an inventory slot. It's good for high-death environments like Dynamis.
Anyway, I want to second the point about never having too much +enmity. I have something like +29 now and still have trouble holding hate off merited DDs, especially on VT or lower mobs.
I'd add the following to the notable gear list for higher levels: Macuahuitl+1: +4 enmity is the most you can get in a weapon. Damage is kinda crappy even at its level, let alone compared to 70+ swords, but you're not here for your damage anyway (except in solo). The NQ does not have *any* +enmity; but the materials are so easy to get that even the HQ isn't particularly expensive anymore. Durandal: +1 enmity doesn't look as good as it used to since Mac+1 was introduced, but it also has +7 VIT and does better damage, so if you can hold hate with it instead of Mac+1, do it. It's also dirt cheap because it drops from some of the most popular BCNMs. Hercules Ring: +3 enmity in a ring. You can't beat that unless you finish the CoP missions (and even then, you can wear both Herc and Sattva and get +6). Sattva Ring: Hard to get, but it's probably the best tanking ring ever. Seriously. +5 VIT and AGI, +30 HP and +3 enmity. Warwolf Belt: +3 enmity, +5 STR/DEX/VIT, and it's cheap. Great. Lamia Mantle (+1): One of the very few PLD wearable items with Magic Defense Bonus. This reduces damage you take from magical special attacks and nukes. Very, very useful since those attacks ignore defense and are therefore some of the most dangerous to PLDs.
Taco also has bonus of mp regen while healing, which is very handly with bard parties.
P.S.
In the past few months I was leveling other DD jobs in the level 50s. When I was partying with those PLD, none of them use the /ja Cover <stpc> at all. Another thing is the PLDs I had partied did not seems to know how to handle link/pop situation. It will be nice to add those info to the guide :D

Unfortunately, my guide isn't going to magically make every PLD a badass tanking machine. I've explained about Cover already, and even provided a macro that helps alot for using it. Further than that I'm not sure of what I can do, since that JA requires a slight amount of cooperation, which is something players of this game seem incapable of at times.

This is true, but I've yet to get there, so it's kind of a moot point. I'd rather not write about things I don't know much about and end up sounding like an ass. Which is why I won't be adding the list of gear you've provided, because this guide is not aimed at PLDs of all levels. I'd say more around 1-50, at which point they should have a general grasp of what they're doing. I may add it later on, but I'm still level 58 at this time.
I thought this guide was good, I've read a few guides which made me red with rage, like insisting that the Gluttony Sword was a MUST and that if you didn't have one, you should quit.
It's funny when emnity is brought up, I used a Grudge sword even when I could use the Honor Sword, I switched to the Honor Sword when I got to the Quicksand Caves. I didn't really notice a difference since I seem to come from the PLD Hate camp of "I won't let anyone steal hate from me!". My biggest accomplishment is when fighting Anticans in Q.C., our THF SATA'd on our SAM and the Ant didn't even turn away from me. I was proud of myself, even when I bit the dust when the jerk used Quake...
But yeah, I think that each person takes the job and decides how they could use the job to it's fullest ability from their own opinion.

Uhhh you know quake is fairly easily interruptable right? I have yet to be hit by AM becuase of the long cast time, when you fight the Antican mages at the level you need someone with stun, if not, don't bother with them there to much and if shiled bash is down, well I don't like to think of the results.....

+1 emnity is never going to make that much difference, in fact I switched to the Honor Sword as soon as possible.
