  • The SATA paladin?

I was wondering why PLD get so few invites to EXP parties, and it got me thinking about diffrent subjobs Paladin could use for diffrent roles in a party. I saw the DD thread, and as ny character was set to THF currently, I thought... Why not sub THF and be a puller? I see multiple situations where this might work out. True, Paladin dosn't have high evasion, but they have a hell of a defence. They could pull with light MP spells, and help cure in parties where the main healer is a RDM or SMN. If the party wipes, they could hit flee, zone, then come back and raise.

    Asking your thoughts.

Strangers would be more skeptical in inviting such a PLD... but with friends and LS members, I really don't see what the problem would be... sounds like a plan! :D

/THF wouldn't make you a better puller, just less useful in general. Why sub /THF when you could sub /WAR, pull with the bows the game gives you, support with Flash/Cure and DD with Berserk/Double Attack/Attack bonus?

In any case, I don't think invites are scarce. At least in Midgardsormr, I've been getting plenty of invites, as tanks just aren't as common right now. As for "other roles for PLD," see RDM. A RDM could DD if he wanted to, but DD'ing is replaceable and interchangeable among many jobs; Refresh whoring, Hasting, Dispelling, etc. aren't. It's not that a PLD can't fill other roles, it's just that they excell so much more at tanking that it's almost a waste to have them do something else when you could get another specialist to do the DD'ing/Pulling/Support.

I'm gonna have to agree with Armando. But the way I see it, if you have to have a subjob other than WAR, it should be NIN. Of course with this combo you won't really be tanking, but you can deal out a good amount of Damage. Also Utsusemi coupled with your naturally high VIT would make a selective puller.

But if you want my real thoughts on the situation: The whole thing makes me sick. Paladin's were here to be tanks and nothing else. Maybe I'm just being narrow minded, but I chose to be a tank so I could do just that. It feels like an insult, nay a straight out punch to the face to be considered anything different. People got to 75 before NINs were around. PLDs tanked to 75 before NINs were around. It just seems everyone wants an easy way out.

        Sorry if I rambled.

Edit: I am, of course, referring to TP burn parties where most PLDs sub NIN.

"Oh, you ca'n't help that," said the Cat: "we're all mad here. I'm mad. You're Mad."
"How do you know I'm mad?" said Alice.
"You must be", said the Cat, "or you wouldn't have come here."

Welcome to Alice in FFXI =P

I wonder what the harm would be if SE extremely limited Utsusemi magic and watered it down to 1/4 of its potency; e.g. increase the recast time to about 2mins? lol that would really deter people from using ninja as a tanking option.

The last thing Paladin needs is provoke/ga. I think it would be a sad day in FF11 when PLD/NIN roam the world w/provoke/ga. I'll sell my account to LOLRMT.

          Goodbye everyone.

Utsusemi could perhaps use a tiny tiny nerf for NIN mains. Something like increasing base recasts by 2-3 seconds. For NIN subs, however, Utsu Ni should not be available at all. Even end game burn parties should need a tank.

So like I said, here's the serious part. Thief is subpar for us for two reasons. Most other classes that can get away with it have DD traits/JAs that actually make it worthwhile. What do Paladins have that works well with Thief? Nothing. Secondly, we're tanks, not damage dealers. Going against the grain is cool, but this combo doesn't play to the strengths of the Paladin class and instead spreads us too thin in an attempt to be a "me too!" Damage dealer. I don't doubt the possibility that it may work in some cases, but we're not Superman, we have our limits.

                  Re: The SATA paladin?

Couple days late...but...I only sub jobs other than WAR for soloing & questing. I sub WHM, or RDm for the sneak, invis, & deo spells, THF for Treasure Hunter, BLM for warp, NIN I tried just for dual wield.
But in my playing I have found that unless you are lvl 75 with the egg that you can equip under throwing which lets you provoke, holding hate becomes quite a bit harder with out the attributes /WAR gives. Provoke is a great reason to sub war, but the other stats you gain help out just as much.
