I considered the Earth Doublet, but I guess I'm just too worried about how I look, because I didn't want to wear a doublet. XD Bad PLD, skipping out on VIT to look pretty.

Sadly enough I didn't use the Earth Doublet for this reason also.

I mean, c'mon, where is the fun in tanking if you can't look good doing it?

Aw, I like the way doublets look. And if you look closely at the Gallant surcoat, you'll notice it's a re-skinned Doublet armor model, with added pauldrons (shoulder armor).

I am an Elvaan Paladin, and here's what I did:

I used the doublet armors (Earth Doublet + Brigandine), and upgraded my mantle from Wolf Mantle+1 to Earth Mantle when I could. I too thought that +VIT in the middle levels was more important than a few points of defense.

I also used Magna Gauntlets and Magna Boots at the start of fights for extra MP, and had a macro to switch them to Eisen (NQ Kampf gear) Hands and Boots. I did this until I got my AF hands and boots.

So yes, sacrificing defense for VIT is doable. I didn't feel I was in any more danger than I would have had I had the other armor. The Earth Mantle is good, I recommend it.

I think as far as gear choices, you're good :D

Does earth doublet look like gaia doublet? If so, I like the look of that -- it's like a Brigandine that looks good from the front instead of having stupid checkers.

Few random things: I've never been a big fan of evasion unless you're fighting Ts and under. Really incredible for soloing, horrible returns on most exp mobs. Agi, I would lump in with this, except it also affects your A rank shield rate (vs your C or D rank evasion). But in general, I think the upped def of RS chain would be better than AGI on your hot bod.

Also, all my best PLDs were PLDs who could hit stuff. Even a little bit of Dex is something to help. In this day and age, with Nins tanking while DDing, a PLD really needs to contribute at least a weeee bit to the damage pool.

Yeah, earth doublet and gaia doublet are the same model, as far as I can tell. I like how they look too. >_>

I'll be honest though. I didn't feel like I was somehow less good, or that I was more of a drag on the party because I didn't get the Earth Mantle. The RS Chain is really perfectly fine, but if you want that extra VIT (I was mithra, so I probably should have), the Earth/Gaia is a good idea. Just not essential.

well...after reading your post...i didn't change my armor...i'll keep it till brigandine at lvl45...
instead i used my gils to buy both mantles...and i must say that the High Breath Mantle is amazing ^^ it's very funny seeing your life going down...and the other wars and sub nin trying to take the mob off you ^^

I wish that thing was around while I was leveling Paladin. +5 enmity at that level is
almost ridiculous. I use it while leveling my ninja now (@ 50) if I am having hate
problems and it usually solves them. I had a blm ask me if I had enmity merits the
other day, and I don't, lol. (thank you High Breath Mantle!)
