Questions about Pally

I am thinken about getting the Pally advance job, but having trouble about what i should Sub Job. i was thinking about Pld/War. The thing is my Greatsword ability is greater then my sword and i would like to use it. Does the blocking ability only work with a sword and shield or both?
Mainly sword over Greatsword ; or Greatsword over sword.

[B] You should us Sword and u cant use the shild bash withput a shield >.> it doesnt matter how low ur sword skill is with war ull raise it with pld so use sword.

That glorious sticky guide is a bit outdated. Someone should get around to updating it at some point.
