Re: When a pld is not a tank

Actually PLD/WAR with a greatsword isn't really a bad attacker with appropriate gears and Berserk active. Not really as good as a main-line DD, but not too shabby, and comes with their own MP supply and a bunch of nice defensive abilities too.

Spinning Slash is really good of course, but even before then you can still set up interesting skillchains with PLD as an attacker. I don't ever see it done, but ... well... you could if you really had to.

Uh, if a PLD and NIN are in the same party, the PLD should be taking hate off the NIN in the case that the shadows drop.

For the 20-40 range anyways. Don't know much past that.

Re: When a pld is not a tank

PLD/WAR or THF can hold it's own with a GSword, and pretty well too but overall they're going to be compared weak to a true DD set-up NIN or any other melee job.

Well, if you have luxury gear (Hecatomb being the biggest) you can attempt the legendary 1.5k Spinning > Fafnir & tank-at-the-same-time trick... gogo STR+80 PLD/THF SA WS!

Edit PS: Everyone's mentioned it but PLD/NIN is pretty awesome too. Meripo PLD/NIN with Company/Justice(Joyeuse) and all-out STR/ATK/ACC setup is a BEAST.

how good is company in a PT of 6? without duel wield is it better than joy in main hand?

Company in a full PT has the highest damage of any sword in the game (56 compared to Excalibur's laughable 49). Off handing a Joytoy, a PLD can seriously dish out damage.

It should be noted as PLD has one of the best STR ratings in the game. It's just that most Paladins don't have such heavy melee gear readily available.

Re: When a pld is not a tank

Like LadyPeorth said, in a full PT the DMG is 56... It’s really incredible for a 1h sword. It's laughable how much PLDs underrate Company Sword when it's probably the best main-slot weapon possible for dual wielding choices.

Justice Sword is reasonably not too hard to obtain and has STR+7, 1 less D than Joyeuse and a tiny bit more delay; truly the best off-hand sword for any dual-sword wielders. (Excalibur not included, Relics are legendary;,)

Until some people actually see some up-to-par honest-DD PLDs, I think the majority will always underestimate the potential that's always been there. Combined with the items that are available in-game right now, PLDs can dish out some damage while balancing hate and tanking (make use of Curaga Earrings and more enmity+ gear then just your Gallant/Valor, PLEASE.)

Re: When a pld is not a tank

Well, just this morning I was in a pt with War75/nin War75/nin mnk75/war rdm75/blm brd75/whm as a pld73/nin mass chaining VTs just bouncing hate around. My damage output wasnt as good as the wars or mnks, but it wasnt horrible. I was using company sword/joyeuse and averaged 600-700 dmg vorpal blades. Low of the night was missing WS due to having flash cast on me as I WSd, high was 950ish vorpal. The average WS of the wars seemed to be around 800-900 with lows of complete misses and highs of ~1500 dmg. As for average dot, company sword was on par with axes. Joyeuse lagged behind but the double attack proc helped out. The wars were slightly above my damage considering this alone, but what really pushed them up seemed to be passive double attack, as well as higher dmg WSs and more consistant regular attacks during berserk. Considering my merits are for my thf, and the wars had quite a few merits as well as 2 lvs on me, it probably isnt quite as bad as it seemed to me. I didnt get a chance to parse this tonight, however next time I get a chance to be in a pt of a similar setup I will.

One really nice thing about being pld was the mp pool. Besides flash which is very nice when the mnk draws too much hate or the wars utsu timers are down, you get cure1-4 and well as pro1-4. Our rdm d/cd a while into the pt, and I took over a bit of curing duties to keep the pt going until a second rdm was able to make his way there. Ended up making about 27k exp, at a rate of what seemed to be 12k/hr before the rdm d/cd.

Dont get me wrong, pld isnt "teh ubar DD" but it is passable. Also, if you dont have a double attacking weapon to offhand, I would suggest /war for berserk and double attack unless you need utsu.
