Why do look down on this type of pld

OK im on the ifrit server and a drg main i recently got a new pld into my ls, we call him esp. Now he is a pld who uses a gs so i had to see this in an exp action. we both being lvl 60 got a dark and thief to tag. We start partying and i have seen about 20 plds on 2 servers use a gs and he is tied for 1st on my list, he has kept hate better than anyother pld i have exped with. He applied for the all pld ls on ifrit Knights Journey and they would even give him a test because of gs. This is where i tend to get mad, pld gs is the b skill i know this please tell me you all do. He tanks extremly well and will go sword shield on tough aoe mobs but he is a gs primary so tell where he is wrong when he is the best pld i have pt with. ( tanks in pts 85%pld) so i want your opinions.

I tanked with Sword and Shield, personally I like the Sword and Shield because you get a little boost in Defence and VIT from the Sword, and the Gluttony sword / Durandel have a nice VIT boost. Sword and Shield is faster DoT, theres nothing wrong with using a Great Sword, once hes in the 70s tho Sword and Shield would be best. Then again, it's not the weapon that makes the PLD, it's the skill of the player using it.

Because shields block so much damage just by shielding attacks it's not funny. Not only that, but he's losing Attack and Accuracy, both of which are valuable because you can't use too many of your equipment slots on them without sacrificing damage mitigation. And all WS aside, just because he's using a Great Sword doesn't mean he's doing more damage. I mean, technically both weapon's DMG is multiplied by the same number (ok, a lower number for Great Sword) so a sword can do comparable damage in two swings. Also take into account the nice bonuses swords like Gluttony Sword/Durandal/Espadon have, along with the stat boosts on shields. Finally, many people also look down on it because more often than not, PLDs who use Great Sword do it for one reason - "coolness factor." It could work, but unless he's pumping out big numbers on Spinning Slash (unsure the level at which you get this) I don't see why he'd want to lower his effectiveness.

I don't think there's so much as a problem with a PLD who uses a Great Sword, because some of them do look pretty sweet. But Sword and Shield are more effecient.

Now, if the PLD was Lv.62+, and had a Mercurial Sword on their back, they may keep up with damage. But they still miss out on the stats from a 2nd slot, as well as the reduced damage from a Shield.

For me, it's been a really long time since I've seen a PLD even attempt to tank with a Great Sword. And I've seen very few PLDs try and tank with an Earth Staff. (And all of them gave up on it and went back to Sword/Shield after a few fights.)

PLDs can use Spinning Slash, but just how much damage would it do if they're tanking with Defender up 100% of the time.

In general, any average plds can "hold hate well" in an xp pt unless he totally doesn't know how to play the game. It really boils down to 1 question - can he be more efficient if he's using a sword/shield combo instead of greatsword? A pt with a pld using gs may be able to chain5, but what if that pld uses shield/sword instead? most likely they'll hit chain5+ unless its a very specific pt setup.

Actually, Rugal once said that with Spinning Slash, Great Sword became worth it if you really needed it for skillchain because of how damaging it was...though he also made it clear that's the only circumstance he'd use it. Of course, I'm nowhere near that level, so I don't know. I just know that if you lost your shield, you're already taking a lot more damage. Oh and let's not forget Company Sword at 70...56 DMG is crazy.

Perhaps due to the fact that you need THF or /THF to TA you to make it more efficient. 95% of the time I don't get TA'd cause I hold my hate on my own already. Nothing is not workable for anything, you can have a Club weapon if you want to, if you know how to use it. The thing is, it's all about how your party will welcome it is the question. Rugal did it when they were Chaining VT Darters he said. His DPS went up significantly high when he said he used it. Problem is, again, party configuration for it to work. But, you're not any better than any of the DRK's out there.

If they're looking for DMG, then that's stupid. Again, hate's not the issue here, it's how much MP you'll drain your WHM with is the problem. Having Shield and Sword combo gives you shield block, and raising your shield skill (Atm I'm at 263, 13 off the cap at 75) allows for more shield blocks. Spinning slash also has an issue of acc, and being a PLD you need a high ACC for it to always land efficiently (I remmeber Rugal said he had an Assault Jerkin and some other equipment he used to increase his acc for it) which is very costly (Haubergeon -20EVA, 2 Snipers -20DEF, that adds up as well). Slower hits, a high chance of misses also adds up. IMO, that's the biggest concern of a lot of people (including healers). If you're holding hate, then that's fine. It's not that hard. The fact that you're taking too many hits (cause our Parry isn't even that high *198 for me atm*) and damage you take is a bad thing. I have yet to hear anyone here that says they're using GSword againts Aura Statues up in sky. If anyone has any parser on how much DMG you took, how many times you parried, and what not, I would like to see that.

Its not the issue of how sword sheild he got eva equip and hunts down his items he is the most effective pld i have seen in the game yet.

Again, it's fine if it's effective. Let's assume he is, like you've said: the question is, would he be more effective if he were using a sword and shield instead? I just don't see how Great Sword is better.

he only changes to shield sword to stop bad aoes from pts and he also keeps his sword shield maxed and he is better with a gs it amazes me
