I think if PLD got a Provoke-like ability they'd be broken beyond reason. For one thing you'd be able to tank with any sub (/NIN,) and for another, if the person opted to go WAR anyways (which is a fairly logical choice given all the stuff WAR sub gives post-50) he's got two hate tools he can spam over and over in between Flashes.
If Pld had Provoke on main and subjob then the ability would be linked to the same timer presumably, therefore, no imbalance. Anyway, paladins' biggest issue isn't hate control, it's survivability. Pld/nin with provoke would be too imbalanced and whilst I'm sure many Plds would be happy there'd be a great deal more upset and out of work ninjas.
I dunno, dont most people consider PLD to be sub-par compared to NINs? Not that i feel its true, but you know how some people are..>_>; But then again they also think WARs cant tank up there with the NINs and PLDs...in which of course they can if they do it right..so i ono, it might not be that bad.
It IS funny though how PLDs are supposed to be tanks but have no Provoke..i always thought that was just..the wierdest thing..
The topmost sticky on the pld page has the answer you need. I suggest reading that information if you havent yet. It will save you a lot of trouble and you will learn what you need to know.
Giving PLD Provoke would open many doors for them...but, I would have to agree that they would be broken.

Ninja sub doesn't really benefit a PLD that much for survivability. Shadows don't last long with low evasion and AGI and mediocre parry (plus you get fewer subs and are easier to interrupt on recast with /NIN anyway).
Some people like it to offhand Joyeuse for TP, especially when meriting on weak mobs like decorative weapons (although this has somewhat fallen out of favor since the introduction of Lufaise and Uleguerand with better exp mobs).
With a bit of party support, it'd be possible to keep shadows up a good deal. Though, if I didn't need Provoke, I'd sub /WHM or /RDM full time. Stoneskin/Phalanx are very efficient MP-efficient ways of mitigating damage ^^ Spikes/enspells are nice to toy around with, too. Of course, I think that'd make us a bit too strong.
