  • Why do all the plds quit at lv50?

Ya its really weird, like all the plds i know are lv 50 and quit, is it becus lv 50+ is slow and boring or cus they're just sick of their job? cus i know soooooooooooooo many

Actually, many people quit their first job around 50~60 or so, reguardless of the job. As far as I can tell, this is when the game starts to become demanding. The exp for each level is increased dramatically, and the time needed for farming for gears has gone up by a lot too. If you are not in a job you can enjoy, it gets right down painful at this point.

There is nothing wrong with level 50 Knights. I know several above 50, and still very happy about their job.

This is why I think it's important to research on the job and its role. Many would go into a job based on their ideals of the job would be, instead of what it really is. It takes a lot of work to get to 75, and we aren't paying $15 a month for an year just to do something we don't enjoy.

Most people quit in their 50's because of the pain in the ass of having to start getting parties and alliances together for genkai and artifact quests.

I had my second guesses myself about staying w/ PLD when I hit 51. The early 50s are a very trying time for a PLD. No longer is Flash the hate-grabber it used to be. Other melee are starting to do ridiculous damage while you have to fight even harder in relation to keep hate. You have little to no enmity+ gear and it seems that anyone can steal hate sometimes.

The strategies that PLDs used in their 40s no longer apply. Some PLD can't accept that and refuse to change and hence, may quit.

There is the other problem that the number of PTs looking for a PLD begin to dwindle. This was true at least when I hit 50. Its like there was a cutoff. PLD take for granted all the PT invites they got (probably got) in their 40s.

However, as a PLD you can't flinch at the cost of your gear. The cost of gear starts to go up faster than you can farm. In my opinion, PLD is one of the cheaper jobs out there to outfit. You have some big expenditures but don't forget that as a PLD, you are lucky that most PL use all 5 pieces of their AF up to 73.

before adaman most PLD used AF to 75.

pld is really quite cheap, AF, sword ( gluttony or espadon+1 ) shield ( generals or koenig ), backpiece: beak+1/amemet/behemoth

sure nice paladin gear will set you back a few mill, but unlike rng and nin it wont set you back a few tens of mill.

I think the leves 50-60 are the major quitting point for a lot of people, regardless of class. Genkai and F can be annoying as hell.

PLDs job does get kind of boring in the 60s... its the same thing over and over again (well what job isnt), but the thing is, your not shelling out tons of damage, your dont taking very small damage (like a NIN), your not dodging anything, you barely shield/parry... all you really do is take big hits, and cast a few spells/abilities once in a while... at the point that I am at, its pretty much mechanical.... I pretty much know that I have enough hate, and if a big attack is coming, I just throw out an ability (and with FOUR usually available, Flash, Sentinal, Shield Bash, the whole PT defender one)... usually I don't even need to use sentinal or the whole PT defender one the entire exp session =X... with +enimity gear and mages with -enemity, I can hold hate with no problem just using provoke, cures, and flash (and throwing in a shield bash if the SC is occuring early in the fight). (Of course with a RNG in the PT, hate holding becomes harder... but not hard...)

Honestly, PLD is not a very "fun" job... but what job is? I guess the only thing I dislike about PLD is the fact that we aren't really good at anything. And please don't say "we can get tons of hate! (ill get that later)". Our attack sucks, we take 100-150 per hit, terrible evasion, no good spells (except for flash... stoneskin and blink would make a PLD a much better, and equal to NIN, tank). As for hate grabbing skills? Here is my opinion on this (and I've stated it many times), PLDs get too much hate. There is no reason to have 80000 hate when all you really need is 1000. A well skilled, and equipped, NIN who has purchased some +enimity gear (i believe +4/5 in total compared to AF which is ), will have no problem keeping hate. For one, they hit for more damage, hit more often, dodge more hits (which means less hate lost), use ninjutsu for hate (just like casting spells... of course less hate, but still hate), have all the same WAR SJ abilities....

Ok, didnt mean this to turn into a PLD vs NIN argument.. but the point is, if you enjoy playing PLD, stick with it, its a good job and is needed in the higher levels. If you don't like PLD (for whatever reason), you should consider changing jobs, because it doesn't get anymore fun =\.

I guess in the end, MMORPGs arent very "skillful" in the sense of a FPS where you need to have precise, accuracy, and superb timing. Instead, as long as you can hit a sequence of keys in the right order and pay attention, you can play your job well

Hehe, you guys are scaring me, and I'm about to just hit 50 too. But I'm gonna keep going to see what is ahead. I don't know what will happen, and how the mobs in 50's are, but I'll try and manage. But I do agree with you Lolial, If I remember correctly, I did take adavantage of getting a lot of invites at 40's (and an invite to 2 statics) for granted. Now I'm seeing the bad side of it, and I'm not even at 50. But we'll see, only time will tell I guess.

Wrong, PLD takes a lot of skill later on when you start tanking/kiting the big hnm's.

And I disagree on PLD not being a "fun" job. Tanking hard monsters has to be the most enjoyable experience in the game... When your being hit for insane amounts of damage and worried about whether or not you'll even live or not, thats some fun stuff.

But yah, the 50's are kind of like the crucible so to speak. If you want to get your job a high level you have to have the dedication to buy a whole new set of equip at 50, start having long exp sessions to get through the 20k needed, and go on boring coffer/key hunts.

Luckily many of you coming into the 50's know a lot of people that are already a high level, imagine the first NA's who had no one to rely upon going through the 50's by themselves. Many of the first whm couldn't get their af3's for weeks because no tank could stand long enough against the whm af3 stalker. hehe
                  Screw this game.

well of course, tanking HNM and Gods is fun =)... but GETTING to that level is hell... thinking about the 200k+ xp im going to need to get? I do agree there is a lot of fun stuff to do in FFXI, but leveling is not one of them. As for the "skillful" quote, I was referring more to the leveling aspect of the game. Only being to a few HNM fights, I can't really comment on the skill needed for some of those (but I can imagine). But still, unlike a FPS, if you miss time something by a few milliseconds, it isn't the end of the world :p

edit: oh yeah, if you can get a static, DO IT. Youll save yourself tons of time... you can't even imagine....

Yah I agree, leveling can be tedious at best. hehe

But there is fun to be had at all levels as a Tank. I remember the first time I tanked a ghoul in shak maze at like 15 as a warrior hehe. (i died )

Whats good about this game imho is there are a lot of opportunites throughout the levels to have a challenging and fun experience. Af2's/etc come to mind, and the first time exploring new zones like xarcabard or ifrits cauldron can be very rewarding experiences as well.

Yah, logging on and hitting provoke every 30 seconds for 6 hours will become very tediousome, but theres a lot more to this game than that and the 50's really open you up to that. Shit during the 50's I would actually fien for an exp party after hunting for coffers all day. hehe
                      Screw this game.

The reason why I chose the PLD job was to be able to tank the High end mobs of this game. I started as a warrior and having converting from EQ, since EQ's main tanks are Warriors, I decided to take that route since I wanted to know how it is to be a tank, and how tedious and boring and tough it is. Later on while I got to 18 as my war, my RL friend told me that the MT's of the game are not warriors (this was around November), but the PLD's instead.

Now, mind you I wanted to be the Main tank, so I took the PLD route. Now I have killed some of the high end mobs in EQ, and believe me, I understand the hastle of what to you need to go through, what type of prep you need to do, what you need to look out for, what your suppose to do, etc. etc. So yes, I am looking forward to this day, but the problem is, I dont' know how it's going to turn out in 2 levels and 2500exp. But again, like I said only time will tell. And I stuck it out with my PLD in EQ, hell I'm going to as well in this game.

                          JP

P.S. Yes, PLD's were pretty much the gimp class of the melee's in EQ. Having to play on a PvP was more than just crazy, it was fun as well ^_^ (To all my friends back in EQ server Vallon Zek: Zephyros and Defiant, you guys are the BOMB!!).

I would think its the radical change of pace in lvling. No longer is it just 6000 tnl, its now a whopping 10K+. As well the mobs exponentially hop up in difficulty. Robber crabs just by me battling ONE of them, i can already tell its that much harder than the Clippers i got in Qufim. That is already a big turn off for many. I sometimes doubt if i want to be a WHM all the way sometimes, RDMs can heal sometimes just as good, and have most of the useful Utility spells as well as Refresh, i cant do dmg with a /BLM sub, and i also cannot enfeeble even HALF of the RDM's power. But i like being the pure healer, and thats the job i am taking to the top, and i guess you really...just really need to love that job more than the rest to shoot to the top. My friend is a lvl 50 RDM, got bored of it then, then changed to PLD. Its just like that, when things leap, do you WANT to do it all the way up there through your hours of lvling? Many probably just ask themselves, and say yes or no.

Not to mention for some classes things get expensive, i say PLDs really really got it eays for being able to use AF for most of the time compared to other melee. DRK AF i heard is pretty useless after a point, but PLD can use theirs all the way up to 75 no need to stop to farm cept for MISC items and the occasional sword. Melee need their expensive snipers and their urber gear to get invited(if at all ;-, mages get elemental staves(expensive on midgard) and other things too. Its all about how devoted and how much you love your job in the end to go through the tougher lvls in the game.
