Sword and Shield is a Paladin's bread and butter. Blocking can be a life saver at times, thanks to shield skill. Sure, you can parry with a Great Sword, but you can parry AND block with a Sword and Shield. ^_^ b
Also, to the warrior who is using Sword and Shield:
If you're so bent on using a Shield (which I was actually), why not opt for a one handed axe at the time? I'm not going to make you switch to it now (since according to the info, you are in your high 20s and almost have PLD unlocked), but just wondering why you did not go that route? Personally, that's where I went.
Also, I have three jobs which I can equip a Great Sword: PLD, DRK, and WAR. I used Warrior to level up Great Sword for my DRK, especially after I saw how crappy I was in the DRK quest. For now, it's been capped with PLD, just 2 skill levels from being capped in DRK, and it's probably capped with WAR since they don't have an A rating. It's best to be adaptable.
Also, once I reach high enough levels, I think it would be interesting to see a DRK using Spirits Within on some HNM battles.
