  • Itemization Need Some Help.

Well I've been trying to figure out what weapons to use for my NIN. I'm not sure the math on figuring out a weapons dps, so I've been using dmg/delay to see how much delay there is per damage. I'm currently using

which using my formula would equal to

    Shinobi-gatana LV:13
    Dmg: 11 Dly: 227
    20.63 Dly/Dmg

I was trying to save up for,

    Mokuto LV:16
Dmg: 11 Dly: 232 Additional Effect: Silence
    21.09 Dly/Dmg

So I started thinking hmm.. is my formula incorrect? Then I thought maybe its lower dps because of the added silence effect which might be good for worms in korroloka tunnel and that is why they lowered its dps. Well since I'll be LV:19 soon I figured I would get the Suzume and came across the same thing.

    Suzume LV:19
    Dmg: 11 Dly: 190
    17.27 Dly/Dmg

    VS

    Ganko LV:20
    Dmg: 12 Dly: 227
    18.916 Dly/Dmg

I've been using this website to keep track of my auctions. FFXIAH.com and it somewhat confirms my theory. Suzume's are marked as 3.47 DPS and Ganko's are marked as 3.17 DPS. Is there something behind NIN that I don't know? Any reason why I should be using a lower dps weapon with higher damage vs a higher dps weapon with lower damage. I was thinking maybe I should use the Ganko's because they hit harder since I won't be constantly dpsing since I have to recast Utsusemi: Ichi. Than I thought well if you are attacking faster you have more chances of getting critical hits so that would help as well. Now I'm just confused on what to do. Any suggestions from experiences Ninja's to help me hold aggro?

BTW I haven't tanked yet and I'm level 17. No 1 would invite me because I didn't have Utsusemi yet . I did get it enough fame yesterday to get my scrolls so now I'm getting in depth with itemization.

You got to 17 without utsusemi: ichi? o.O Hows?

On topic though, I would just stick with the Mokuto(+1) until you can get the Ganko. TBH, I wouldn't be too concerned with DPS on ninja. You should focus more on getting gear that will help you tank -- evasion, enmity, agi, ninja tools, etc.. than 1 or 2 more damage from a katana.

First off, here is how to actually calculate DPS. And here are pages for each of the weapons you're asking about, that list both the DPS and the TP per hit (when single-wielded):
      Shinobi-gatana - FFXIclopedia - a Wikia Gaming wiki
Mokuto - FFXIclopedia - a Wikia Gaming wiki
Suzume - FFXIclopedia - a Wikia Gaming wiki
Ganko - FFXIclopedia - a Wikia Gaming wiki

In general, go for DPS. But when you're talking tiny fractions (like the .07 DPS difference between Mokuto and Shinobi-Gatana), other factors can make a difference, like that chance at Silence if you're going to be fighting anything that has magic (worms, beastmen, undead, etc.).

Also in general, don't expect differences in stats to make any sense between any two pieces of gear based on the level you can equip them. You'll find yourself sticking with lower-level gear because it's just better than what's available at higher levels over and over and over again.

Interesting, So the trade off would be TP. It doesn't seem as NIN does high damaging WS so I guess I'll stick to dps rather than TP until I see a WS that is worth its damage.

        Thanks for the links Ellipses.

According to one of the links.. it seems DPS even if its slightly more, its actually a huge margin. Unless I'm misunderstanding this statement.

        Military axe: 46 x 60 / (474) = 5.82 DPS
        Centurion's Axe: 48 x 60 / (504) = 5.71 DPS
According to the DPS, the Military Axe is superior to the Centurion's Axe - around 2% more DPS. 2% is a lot in FFXI compared to the effort, which some players do to boost their attack and or strength and the AGI +1 at the Centurion's Axe doesnt help for damage, but otherwise the 504 delay give 13.72 TP per hit instead of 12,7 TP per hit by 474 delay

        Mog,

I hit 13 by soloing and got a group with a PL. They got me to 16 than I just solo in Palborough Mines to 17.5 because people kept saying we need a tank. I guess invites for Nin to do damage are very very limited

          Re: Itemization Need Some Help.

Generally, TP is going to even out anyway. The TP per swing is a straight calculation from delay (more delay = more TP per hit), so with a few exceptions due to rounding, you're going to get roughly the same TP/minute no matter what you're swinging. So, yes, even more so, stick with DPS.

            Re: Itemization Need Some Help.

If you think NIN doesn't get any damaging WS early on you're clearly underestimating the power of Blade: Retsu. Not only is it a potent paralyze, as a 3-hit WS it's the equivalent of MNK's Combo. And yes, TP is going to even out.

The correct way to compare DPS is to take a ratio. The difference between two weapons with 2.00 and 2.50 DPS isn't anywhere near the same as weapons with 10.00 and 10.50 DPS even though both differ by 0.50. The latter does 25% more damage over time than the former in the first pair assuming all other factors are the same; in the second pair, the latter does 5% more damage.

But yes, in general, you can forget about Delay, focus mainly on DPS, and if you have two weapons with similar DPS (and by similar I mean that the % difference is very narrow, like 2-3% difference) then you can look at additional stats.

              Re: Itemization Need Some Help.

I don't think its a matter of under estimating it, its more having to do with it only doing 0-10 damage against lizards at my level (LV:16 at that time) as appose to Blade: Rin that would do about 25-40 which is 2-4x more damage. I did not know its a 3 fold attack, I don't remember seeing anywhere it stating that. Maybe that is why its doing such little damage. I am probably missing 2 hits every time I use it resulting in lower damage. As for the paralyze, usually WHM/BLM/RDM's have paralyze up already and I don't think they stack.

I'm sure at higher levels I'll probably switch to a high damage Katana rather than Higher DPS as a MH for weapon skills since I'm guessing most WS have stat + dmg modifiers. As for my OH, I'll just use what ever has the highest DPS for my current level.

                Re: Itemization Need Some Help.

Retsu is 2 hits, Dual Wield adds 1 hit to every physical WS. Anyways, If Rin is doing that much more damage than your Retsus then you have Accuracy and Attack problems and/or you're overhunting.

What is MH and OH? Anyways, no, do not go for DMG, ever. Higher DPS always wins. Higher DMG isn't going to boost your WS nearly enough to make up for all the damage you lost on normal hits getting to 100 TP. The only time you pick higher DMG is when you have two weapons with practically the same DPS in the first place.
