Gear opinions for my NIN

So I have started NIN as a sub for my RDM, coz Im mad about the ability to solo things not normally done by other jobs (except maybe BST)

I have gotten to LVL22 so far, using stuff I seen on the AH, but I'm sure there are pieces that I really would benefit from having.

Just done some looking up myself, and found the 2 NMs in Valkrum Dooms both drops things that I would benefit from - Night Cape (EVASION +3) and Empress Hairpin (EVA +10, AGI +3, DEX+3). Ill hunt those very soon.

Are there any other bits I should be looking at?

Around level 25 there are some good pieces worth grabbing:

Federation Tekko is useful.

Some NIN grab a pair of Federation Sitabaki. Some go for Republic Subligar. Some just wear Chain Pants.

Federation Gi can be useful. But many NIN just wear the Chain Mail body at that level. At 30, some grab a Nanban Kariginu.

As you approach 30, a Nikkariaoe is something worth looking into. Until then, just pick two Katana that you are comfortable with.

Evasion gear is good for NIN pre-level 37. Kingdom Trousers (Def 14, Vitality +1, Evasion +3). Chainmail is good in kazham, since mandies is weak at the level.

For Empress Hairpin, you can use Kurayami: Ichi as an alternative while you are working on it.

How far are you taking NIN? I was only levelling to 37, and found that going for the highest defense gear and food I could really helped out. Evasion gear is crap in my opinion. I know some people swear by it, but I've honestly only ever found it to really work on THF and even then. Of course, this is mainly because for the majority of the game we hunt mobs that are a good 8-10 levels higher than us so they're accuracy is too high to begin with.

Well, to start with yes, 37. Who knows after that.

Right now Im on a Chain Mail kit with Cotten Headband and Spike Necklace...

1 Ring is AGI +2 and the other STR +2

The Federation gear looks kinda low DEF... Or should I be playing to my strengths as a NIN and max out EVA gear??

Just going by the fact that so far in a party, I cant get a reliable backup voker so more often than not Iv got my shadows down, hence needing DEF to take the hits.

That's why I said some NINs wear it, and others wear something else. There isn't one set way to wear gear as a NIN.

Well, I got my Night Cape. Couldnt even get the Valkrum Emperor to pop after 3 hours of killing flies.

I'm in the process of leveling NIN sub job as well. (Needed for RDM & WAR subs as well as all other situational subs.) Tacked on 4 levels last night and here's what I'm running around in.

Emp. Hairpin - Eva+10 AGI+3
Fed. Gi - Eva+2
Kingdom Trousers - Eva+3 VIT+1
Nomad Mantle - Eva+3 AGI+1
Fed. Tekko - Acc+3
Mythril Earring +1 (x2) - Eva+3 each
Reflex Ring - AGI+2
Shikaree Ring - Acc+2

So this adds up to Eva+25 and I eat Jack-'o-Lanterns for another Eva+10 and Acc+10.

I'm main handing the Nikkariaoe and off handing a Busuto +1, and honestly, I'm glad I borrowed the Nikkariaoe. 150k Katana and I haven't noticed that Spell Interrupt-25% helping me.

Of course at this level, even with Eva+35 we're going to be hard pressed to make Ichi last a full 30 seconds, and the "sheep" still force NIN to level through the Jungles. Fortunately the little Onion-heads don't hit very hard so when they drop our Shadows inside of 2 attack rounds they won't be one shotting us afterwards. With that said, I was able to keep a pretty decent lock on hate yesterday and not get my skull smashed in the process. By the time the SAM I was leveling with, who was 2.5 levels ahead of me, hit Lv.33 and started pulling hate away from me, we invited a THF to help me out. Taking Goblins at that point wasn't too bad for me, unless the bastards used Goblin Rush back to back! (GAWD I hate Goblin Rush.)

So, NIN31, and hopefully I can knock out another 2 to 3 levels tonight. Static for my WAR just kicked into high gear. I was told it needed to be Lv.60+ by Saturday. Need that subjob outta the way!

Wow, thats a lot of EVA + gear.

Thats expensive gear as well I think!

1. Evasion build is not the only way for NIN.

2. If you are going for Evasion build:
Emp. Hairpin is very good for NIN, but if your goal is only level NIN to 37 and never touch NIN again, there are alternatives without using Emp. Hairpin. The alternative costs gil of cuz: blind the mob, eat Jack-o'Lantern, fill in other evasion/agi gear in most slot.

Hint: Increase your evasion, decrease the mob's accuracy, to a point that you feels enough. Slow + Paralyze will help in a subtle way.

NIN can perform their task without Emp. Hairpin. It is harder and requires more attention/timing/skill, or alternative gear setup, or different party tactics, etc.

For example, fighting Bats and Beetles in GC (level 30 ~ 35), those mobs loves to spam AoE evasion down, and its effect last a long time. At that time my evasion gear/food was not enough to overcome the AoE evasion down, and Bats resist Blind (dark element). Did I just stand there and let the mob rip me apart? No. If plan A does not work, then try plan B... I geared up Def+ and eat Def+ food, it worked.

Considering he is a RDM main and all the melee subs he is gonna level for it then the sooner he gets the pin the better.

That been said Dodge Headband is a nice alternative for an Evasion set of gear.



But still, having L. Boots and the Pin is just too good for many melee jobs to let it pass.

IMHO Nin have...must be proactive on where they lvl. That is if you want to be effective when in a party. i carry 2 gear sets with me. 1 def build and 1 eva/str build. I switch depending on the mob we XP off of. I think its usefull, on gobs i use def becasue they tend to use gob rush alot and cut thru my shadows but i usually get a utsusemi cast in between pulls so that when i have a shadow left i time the last hit to start casting. so i can pul off usually 6-8 hits with my def build, 6-14 hits with eva build.


Also i hated the jungles. Kuraymi would never stick on the mandies even on capped ninjitsu and even on 300 TP WS blade:?? paralis won't stick for more than 3 seconds.

Yes, that build can add up, but as this is a sub, and I wanna get it cap'd as soon as possible, the expensive items listed are borrowed. Hairpin, Leaping Boots, Nikk-[TAB], and Nomad Mantle are all on loan. I save my gil to buy the high priced items for my actual jobs and not the sub jobs. haha.

So do what I did: Hit up your LS mates. If your LS is anything like mine, they have a store of items that they loan to their friends when needed. That's party of why I've kept so many gear sets, so I can loan them to other friends and save them some gil.
