Kind of off-topic but although Ranger is also a rather expensive advanced job to play, the quest to obtain it is even easier than Dark Knight's quest. You talk to an NPC in Windurst Woods, buy 1-3 prism powders if you don't have the Invisible spell, then run a Chocobo to Sauromugue Champaign and watch a Tiger die... you aren't even supposed to fight it. Then click on its bones then warp back to Windurst Woods and talk to NPC again. You even get a nice low-level sellable Ranger Necklace out of it.
Ninja, I can understand why they made it difficult for low level players to complete the quests. Just the other day a linkshell member with a level 35 Red Mage finally obtained Utsusemi: Ichi. But the problem is he thought it was just like any old regular mage spell. He went cheerfully off to the Dunes only to find out he couldn't cast the spell because he had no shihei. :D I have paid over 4 million gil just level Ninja to 37. Whereas with Dark Knight, except for some cheap cheap absorb-spells I could farm on my Thief I already have all the necessary spells from leveling Black Mage already.
For a low level player, I would definately recommend not starting Ninja until you are ready to make a large gil investment into it.
I did NIN quest a friend recently... he popped it while I was fighting a leech (no big deal, NIN75...). As it turns out, if you fight a leech while the little guy spawns them they'll link you instead of the guy who needs the quest, big plus so I don't have to see them take 600+ dmg in a single round.
Anyways, I have NIN75 & DRK72. NIN is by far a lot more fun IMO, but to get the most fun out of it, play it as a DD not a tank, that way... tanking isn't so hard, because damage = hate. As for DRK, definetly great for large numbers, my DRK's WS still hit harder than my NIN's and my DRK is very gimp now (+8 STR only wtf, NIN @ +27). Both jobs are incredibly fun, and I'm trying to go back to get my DRK lvl'd but I have to cheat and make my own PTs or change jobs when we do marid fights (I'm great at soloing Chigoe on my DRK ;P)
i wonder how much gil i would have had if i didnt spend any of it on shihei...
it's like one of those you were never meant to know kind of questions. orz /sulk
I was thinking the same thing this morning as I was drooling at Peacock Charm, lol. To think, I own a Scorpion Harness, Haubergeon, two Fudo, Arhat's Hakama +1, and some other semi-expensive WS macro crap, and I still sometimes wonder how I could ever afford it all after playing 3 jobs with /NIN or NIN main. >_>;
Hee hee. When I started this game and hit 30 with my Warrior for the very first time I was in doubt whether I would go for Ninja and Dark Knight as well.
I was waiting for my comrades to do the NIN flag quest, so I thought it was a nice idea to do the DRK flag in the meantime.
Eventually I continued with DRK. I'm just @ 18k from 75.
Now the irony. I already have THF and WAR at 37 for XP parties. WHM if I want to solo a bit. Recently I heard stories about DRK/NIN axe burns. Whether it's good or not: I'm gonna level Ninja! Nothing looks cooler than a DRK with two axes in action! ^_^
Nothing looks cooler you say? How about a DRK with a gigantic blue puppy next to him? Yeah I'm still trying to get fenrir... just for the looks... ya know... cuz that would be hawt... ok nvm D:
I have seen DRK/NIN slowly coming of age here lately as well. I know alot of people feel this is inferior but if it works and let's DRK's get more invites, then so be it. You guys have what skill in Axe, B or B+?

Well, Here's a big kick in th' butt!! After getting the required "airship keys" in order to go to Kazham to complete the NIN quest, A buddy did the Teleport thing and I ended up in the cut scene for the DRK, where the NPC hands over the sword and tells me to kill 100 boogers with this sword and bring it back.
Well, That's a whole lot easyer than completing the NIN quest. (them boogers in th' snake place is tuff)
