ninja can automatically avoid so many hits. By timing their abilities and relying on their awesome evasion, they can go through entire fights taking very little or even 0 damage. And so, why not provoke a monster and tank while playing your invincibility act? And that's the long short of it.

If you really truely want detail:
Utsusemi: Ichi (nin 12) provides 3 shadows which provide absolute protection from the next physical attack (some special attacks ignore it, some don't). This spell has a long recast time and only avoids 3 attacks, but people found something funny out: cast before a battle begins, wait for the spell to cool down so it's ready to cast again. Now when the fight starts, you avoid the first 2 of your 3 hits, and then start re-casting utsusemi (has a long cast time as well, hence casting early) when the spell finishes, you'll have avoided your 3 shadow, but you'll now be complete with 3 new shadows. And so, ninja can avoid 6 hits and then someone else needs to tank until 37.

At level 37, ninja attain Utsusemi: Ni. This spell has a very fast casting time (still a long cool down timer though) and avoids 4 hits instead of 3. By chaining Ni's and tossing in Ichi's, you can now tank an entire battle without taking substantial damage. I'm certain that I've left out something but someone will get to it.
"And if he left off dreaming about you, where do you suppose you'd be?"
