  • Sairen.. is it worth it?

Currently lvl 59 NIN, wondering if I should buy this katana, it's @ 800k though, I do have enough, just wondering if it is worth it.

I love mine and don't plan on selling it even when i'm higher because its another slot to add +strength. Its sold for 1million in jeuno a few times and pretty rare.
Tarutaru ninjas probably benefit the most from this katana since you have lower base strength to work with, every bit helps.

I'm still trying to get a kitsusuki katana from den of rancor which will probably replace Sairen for general tanking except on darksday when i am 64 because I prefer the lowest weapon delay possible.

Sairen does help with farming, the extra strength increases your damage output, even though its 1base damage lower than a +1 version of the level 61 katana.

For farming I swap in a spike necklace, rk belt +1, rk legs and you have yourself a pretty huge strength bonus that cuts through higher level farming targets pretty quick.

Its the perfect weapon for those byrnie wearing 'attack gear' ninjas too.

Speaking as an attack build ninja ^_^

If I have no bard I prefer hototogisu and korrito+1, if I have a bard just use 2xkorrito+1.

I am interested in picking up a Sairen though, If I could buy one for 250-300k I'd probably get one, just for BC60 and some darksday fun.

It's really good. But not necessary. I bought it because I liked having the best possible weapons in the game at each stage (Shinogi/Hocho, then later Sairen/Hocho).

If you got cash just buy and resell later, it's rare enough that the price will most likely go up. It's good up until 66, when you can go double koro.

            WHAT??!!?

People are paying up to 1 mil gil for such a weapon? Geeze +3 strength, even +7 on a darksday isn't worth that much.

Maybe if you're uber rich and just want it as a toy sure, but I mean come one. People really need to start doing the math on some of these items instead of just following the hype in the auction house. Alot of these items really are not worth what u have to pay for them. +3 str? Really what is that? You can get more from a mith and they are alot cheaper than 1 mil gil. And the delay, its too much of a sacrifice.

I tell you nay my friend. If you really want damage then spend that money on ochi kote that are eual to +40 str for about the same price.

              40 STR != 20 ATk.

40 STR WILL give you 20 ATK, but it also moves your damage curve upwards.

I had aobut 5 more STR then another NIN I levelled with from 32-40. Same exact weapons. My average swing however was doing about 3-4 more damage then him though.

If your ATK is low or equal to the monster's DEF, then boosting ATK will give the best damage. If your ATK is 20% or more above the Monster's DEF, then boosting STR will give more damage return.

3~4 more damage for +5str? what then for +3 str maybe 2~3? Thats not worth 800k~1000k to me sorry :/

I don't have a whole lot of time to play so I want the best stuff possible to get the most out of my playtime

Also note that its a level 60 katana which means its a great choice for bc60 fights on darksday.

Besides cost doesn't really matter on most ninja equipments if it helps you reach your goal of leveling up since you can always resell it and roll that gil into newer gear later on.

There's a neverending supply of paladins always looking for a party, a ninja with good tanking skill *and* nice gear has helped me get alot of repeat invites without having my seek flag on.

Even though skill comes first, other players largely prejudge ninjas on how much gil they throw at their gears.
For example I get a random jp tell 'konnichiwa' in hiragana, so I replied hello back with the translator and they replied 'sorry miss'. This seems to be a common jp test to find out if you are 'NA' or not lately lol. So I zone to lower jeuno and go to the auction house, and i get /check 'ed by the person that just sent me the 'miss'tell. Not a moment later they send me a tell 'Level up pt?^^'. So I join the already formed party of 5 well equipped jp players and we kicked some serious butt
That little story is why 500k on a Sairen is not a bad thing.

Note to self: must brag about gear more in search comments

Interesting story Navia. But to spend 500k just to get a jp party invite seems a bit far fetched. Anyway to answer the original question, stat wise I say it isn't really worth it. If you wanna do what navia said and bogat then yah maybe it is. But I wouldn't know since im a broke ninja

I didn't get it just to get more invites, its just most people wont touch a ninja tank they've never partied with but give the ones with good gear the benefit of the doubt (thus the invite) when it comes to pickup xp groups.
Once you are past the joy of killing easy stuff like robber crabs and you need 30k+ to level, most people are paranoid of ninja tanks because if they turn out to suck, it gets ugly in a hurry and people die easier than having a bad paladin.

i'm just a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to outfitting my character really.
Above all it improves my ability to solo xp/farm when I only have an hour or two some evenings which happens *a lot*

Not to cry too much about my leveling speed but it sucks to perform well in an xp party when I finally have a 4+ hour block of time to xp, but on the following week the people that would like to invite me again cant because they outleveled me due to having more play time. :dead:

Such is the life of a ninja that has to level in pickup groups 99.9% of the time. I just want to be 70 sometimes before the end of the year and i'll just sub /bst and solo fulltime probably.

I too am a broke ninja again after some intense clothcraft skilling, but I can make my own shinobi-tabi and kaginawa now

Playtime? Whats that???? LOL I dont even have time to farm :/ I guess you are right tho. Now alot of NA players are styarting to pick up ninja as a second job. And I suppose there are a ton more ninja out there now.

For me tho ninja is my 1st advance job, lol probably embarassing myself even more now by my level ><, but back when i did have time, most people knew you were a good NA ninja just by how well a job you did. Alot of the uber gear thats out now no one even had yet. And literally you could count the number of ninja your level on one hand.

So I suppose what you said is true, having that uber gear will set you aside from the dozens of other ninja out there now.

if you're interested in doing the bcnm for it, my party got two out of the three (i think) sairens on asura in five successful runs as nin/war, nin/war, nin/war, pld/war, rdm/blm, and whm/somethingorother. myself and the ninja whom i conspired to do this with were hoping for four ninjas, but we ended up settling for a paladin and it sufficed. each nin and the pld tanked different demons while all attacking the one on the pld and subtarget provoking/debuffing theirs; when that one was dead we'd continue onto the next, and the next, and the next, in the same manner. i believe we were killing the blm first, followed by the drk, war, and smn. as far as i know they can't be slept, so you need an odd combination like this to win.

our initial plan was to have four ninjas each soloing a demon with occasional healing from whms/rdms, but we were never able to find a suitable fourth ninja. we did try nin/nin/nin/bst/rdm/whm, but the bst was unable to hold aggro on his and it ended up killing everybody. us ninjas had each of our demons at about half health, though, so with four it could still be a viable plan.

The problem with bst hate control is that a bst pet doesn't have provoke. The closest thing that counts is a reward that heals the pet and that healing HP is counted like a pld cure IV'ing himself.

The best way to have the bst hold agro in a situation where he has to fight with a pt that is casting spells like cures and other stuff where the mage generated hate is greater than the pet holding ability might be to disband the bst and have him solo the mob with outside support healing for him occassionally. He won't need much healing if at all so consider him a seperate party all together.

I don't know if the same agro rules apply to bcnm's since may ppl seems to claim that hate is equal everywhere in the bc and doing anything even off radar screen will get you hate equally from all mobs. However from doing numerous bcnm 40 runs, I have not noticed much difference. It's just that everything links and everything agros. I don't know if SE would change agro rules in BCNM fights.

And since I have been in bcnm's where someone disconnected and reconnected they managed to help out despite not being invited back to party yet by charming a mob who's name was in yellow and attacking a spare mob, then I invite them then they join back in with our mass bunny slaying.

Just go in the bcnm as a party so everyone is together. Then when inside, alt tab the bst and then come back in and occupy the demon as a seperate entity. The agro you guys generate by healing the ninjas should not pass onto the mob the bst was fighting. Near the end, invite the bst back in and everyone wins.
