How well is guns used when tanking as NIN/WAR? I want something in for hate-gaining in my tanged slot, but shirukens are extremely expensive as everybody knows (Manji costs 35k a stack to make if I can even find a crafter. Juji are on AH pretty often for 15k a stack. I could get Bullets though for rougly 5k a stack not including +1/+2 (90+ skilled Alchimest)).

My main problem with the guns is the huge delay, along with smaller ACC and ATK compared to throwing considering you're comparing an A skill vs a C.

Another advantage to shirukens is being able to use Bailathorn throughout the battle, and no TP loss when I swith to shirukens...

    But so expensive. ><

Ranged weapons quite frankly suck while tanking. As soon as you hit ctrl+d to shoot that gun, you've just commited yourself to 8 seconds of doing nothing more or less. You can move, but hey, then you lose the shot too.

From what navia posted earlier, it looks like the main advantage /rng would have would be in WS damage, because the DoT on those particular enemies is roughly the same as it would be with katana.

I'll level RNG sub for fun, but it is a joke that lvl 75 has to use a lvl 40 something gun and not even have access to silver bullets. And just imagine Tanking + shooting (600+ delay) lol, not fun, not fun at all.

          Couple of notes:

NIN/RNG can use /RNG activated "Beater's" gear and Gun Belt at 30/15, not 60/30. Earring is RACC+3, mantle is +Rapid Shot, belt is Marksmanship skill+5.

C skill rank is really not a factor. The main problem with lower skillcapped weapons is accuracy, and the skill difference between A and C rank at LV60 is 13 points. You immediately get 5 of that back from Gun Belt, and you get +23RACC from /RNG accuracy bonuses, not to mention all the other ranged accuracy bonuses you can stack. NIN/RNG ranged accuracy should never be a factor post-28.

NIN/WAR using a gun is severely hurt in the WS department. You need /RNG to use gun WS, which (if using dual Archer's as you should) limits you to Gust Slash or Cyclone, as was the case with the NIN/WAR cited.

            Bump!

            Navi,

Now that you are 72 how is it working out? I got bored with just ninja and have started leveling rng as a sub, maybe a main if not just to have something to toake to CoP missions.

But anyway really interested in seeing how you guns are working. I also saw a level 70+ nin gun on someone in game. Was rare/ex. Person said they got it from a BC. Can't remeber stats and stuff. Does anyway else have info on this gun?

            =EDIT=

I found the gun on alla! its called coffinmaker

            http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?fitem=8839

Apparently the latent is activated on WS. If so this is a very cool gun and maybe the key to making end game nin/rng worth it.

            =RE EDIT=

Like all the BC weapons, the latent becomes permanent after 500 points gained from skillchaining. This works the same was as removing the latent from the WS weapons. So this actually is an excellent 70+ gun for ninja. All you have to do is but the time in and you have 40 dmg gun permanently.

I just made level 73 last night, but it has been awhile since I kept marksmanship up to date, busy farming and xp'ing most of the time.
Steelshells in boyhada are nice skill up targets, my last skilling session took me from 195 to 212 in about 2 hours.

This is about the worst thing to be using bullets on, but underleveled gun shots were around 50-60ish damage non critical with 400-500ish slug shots at 100-125%tp (with sushi you can land these 19 out of 20 times without sharpshot eating this food). I did not have my amemit mantle or af gloves on hand which lowered my ranged attack by 30, so the numbers could be higher, by how much I don't know yet.
Once I can cap gun skill, i'll try it out in ro'maeve/sky and let you know how the damage is.

I don't have enough data to support the apparent increase in criticals I was getting while equipping fudo katanas - the weapon says nothing about the crit increase being only from blows delivered by that weapon. The critical up effect appears it might carry over to ranged/secondary attacks or I just got more criticals because the phase of the moon changed or something :p.

I would like to try this on a god that we usually have our paladins tank(byakko) so I could try nin/rng on something besides vt/low IT xp monsters.

As for the Coffinmaker, I don't have one yet - it is something i'm trying to get soon.

i did nin/rng on Kirin and most of the sky HNM. really i just went nin/rng because there was a surplus of tanks and bard wasn't needed so i thought what the heck^^

its funny reading these posts since most people seem to have just gone 'well it must suck i'm not doing that' and disregarded the idea. (as i had until i tried it ~ i only leveled RNG for c.o.p missions.)

well it nothing compared to RNG damage, but it certainly doesn't suck: everything in sky is pretty easy to hit (with prelude you hardly miss) slug shots do 400-500 with my half-assed setup, regular attacks do 60-80 depending on which monster-type. another route would be throwing shiruken and doing maybe spirits with the TP you get (haven't tried that)

i use a Coffinmaker and just the regular Lv22 Bullets.

i'm not saying nin/rng is some awesome DD in the endgame, but if your LS doesn't need you to tank and they're light on RNG its 'workable'

if we could use silver bullets it would be alot more interesting.

only level 31 nin/rng (i use beater earring now, and gunbelt for +5 to marksmen skill witch puts me at 2 down from a ranger)

ATM imo this is the best possible combination in the game....

I can literally do 3 things

debuff- i start each battle with (i pull with blind nin magic since its faster then a gun) blind, then i cast slow and para....

DD- only a ranger with holy bolts is doing more damage, blms can do more damage as well aty the cost of having any MP for chain 5, normal melees get absolutely owned, sharpshot isnt even needed for most mobs, i just save to use for mobs im having a hard time hitting..

Tank- after those three debuffs a pld tank usually has a good hold on the mob, but since im spamming bullets non stop, i usually end up tanking the last half of every battle
Why be like someone famous when you can be like me.

                    ok i thought

one would sub rng for the rng acc+ bonuses and throw instead of using guns. I havent started nin but it seems better to me as nin have higher throwing skill. i would prefer to sub war and change out to rng acc+ gear and throw instead of subbing rng personally, just my thoughts and one major factor in this is that a stack of bullets is for 10k the same as a stack of shuriukens. and shuriuken = better chance of hitting mob.

On a side note, can anybody confirm that coffinmaker drops from Copycat bc, it's the ahriman BC in Waughroon Shrine?

It is listed as droping there on somepage, not on alla.

It's kind of a pain to get blms for the pigeons one and royal ramble doesn't seem too intersting (isn't listed on somepage either so ..)
