poping the Hototogisu NM

can someone tell me the walk through of poping this NM? I have read about it before, but it was very unclear. Thank you.

1. Get a Tonberry Rattle

- To get this rattle, check the 8 rooms in the first map as u enter temple from yhaoter. If you find a ??? mark in the room..check it ..you'll get the rattle. NOTE: this rattle pops every 2hr or so


2. Once the rattle is obtained. Head to the Paintbrush room..where u enter Den of Rancor. There will be a ??? in the middle of the room.. Trade the rattle to pop the NM. the ??? is a 15min pop.. so if you have more then 1 rattle you'll have to wait.

I killed this thing 8-9 times in one week. Solo 2 times. 1st time solo i got out with 800 HP, 2nd time stupid 2h did so much that i almost died but i walked bout with 105 HP and the katana :D

well im 62 NIN now and i think i wont be needing that katana anymore...

currently using kabutowari +1 x2

tho i do like the delay on the hoto

I've seen level 70s go back to uggalepih to hunt down this katana because they thought they didnt need it before.
A high speed 5parry and 3acc katana is nothing to turn down.

Wielding 2 +1 katanas with 222 delay compared to a hototogisu(185delay) and a kitsusuki or kageboshi (185/190 delay) is roughly a .75second difference before haste or dual wield is factored in.
The time difference against 2x kabutowari feels like an eternity to me, with war sub double attack rolled in its like you almost never stop swinging with light fast katanas.
The only time I don't use hototogisu is when I am farming with thf sub and using 2x mukestu+1 's for the hp drain goodness.

Many ninjas take a great deal of pride in acquiring Rare+ex katanas. They are a pain in ass to get, but your weapons can speak volumes to others about how dedicated you are to being a ninja.

I my hototogisu more than my scorp harness, seriously its the greatest item ever :
Killing that tonberry NM 15 times and losing nearly 10k xp in the process was worth it, on the otherhand my 4million investment in a scorp harness is nowhere as fulfilling because making gil isn't hard, just a tedious affair.

a 75 pld can duo it with a whm, and a 74 rdm probably could solo.

70 rdm and 67 whm probably cannot duo it.

It can be duo'd at highlevel but you have to clear out everything in the paintbrush room first.
If you have your partner open the secret door to the Den of Rancor you could spawn him quickly and fight him in that passage so you don't get hit by any respawn since a RDM isn't going to kill it very fast.

I think you might run out of time and get a respawn trying an Aquarius style gravity kite + nuke marathon around the paintbrush room ;3

Keep stoneskin, barfira on as much as possible, and don't let your hp's drop too low so its Mijin Gakure at about 30% life doesn't kill you.

Its not that hard... I soloed 2 times as DRK/NIN 74. And did it with duo with a 61 RDM 2 times, and duo with abunch of WHM before. Did with 4 ppl party just kill it too fast.

THe only problem is Mijin Gakure. YOu need to be careful with that, barfira etc. That move is so random that it took 100 dmg at 1/3 life and took 800 on me at 1/5 life.

Drop rate just sux. But like someone has said above, its like a hornetneedle for NIN. I tried Hototogisu with Hornetneedle on low mob, my attack rate is just way too fast.

hmmm.. but at higher level isnt better to least have a katana that does damage??

the Hoto is fast..but has a damage of 24.. whereas higher katanas has a delay of 222 but dmg is 31

Currently i alternate these weapons

kabutowari +1
kageboshi

or use:

kabutowari +1
kabutowari+1

note: i have fuma kyan and speed belt = 9% haste w/o whm cast = -6sec. of utsu.. if whm haste.. = 8sec off utsu...

if i ever get this hoto..

for lower mob:

hoto and kageboshi = oooohh

Nah, that won't help. When he Mijin Gakures, he will respawn in the area where he popped, and link with whatever respawns around him.

You will at least have fair warning and be within arms reach of the zoneline though pulling him into the tunnel if you want to play it safe.

He despawns when he returns to his spawn point if everyone is killed or zones out, but he lingers at the location where he lost aggro to players before he makes his return so you can split pull him away from respawns or links if you use carby at the right moment if the other tonberries look the other way.

I saw something pretty cool once regarding a SMN and this NM.

If 70+ smn(so all tonberries in room before the NM spawn are 'too weak') spawns it with an avatar out and lets it auto-defend the SMN while the other tonberries aren't looking in the direction of the NM, all the hate goes to the avatar even if they link and the summoner is pounding the crap out the NM with a staff after the first bloodpact.
The tonberry NM dies, SMN releases and all the tonberries just stand there bewildered and go back to their business, leaving the SMN alone - its pretty neat because most would expect everything to turn on the Summoner.
