  • Poor Ninja?

    Hi all.

Please don't flame me right a way. I just want to ask a question. A simple one realy...

I am looking at other jobs to pick up, and was considering a THF. Now, one of the subjobs for THF is a /NIN for Duel Weilding Daggers. Sort of like, triple attack + duel weilding = swing ahoy.

The problem is, I am not that rich. I am working on it, but I am not there. And even when I get there, I might be spending my money on equipment for my Monk rather than spending it on powders for the /NIN... I am used to eating food for my Monk, but my impression is that NIN powders would be costing more than the occasional meat kabob...

So here is the question: How goes the lvling of the NIN without having powders?
    Modnar

    Melee:
    43 Monk; 25 Warrior; 20 Theif; 10 Dragoon; 11 Dark Knight; 7 Ninja.

    Mage:
55 Red Mage; 32 Black Mage; 27 White Mage.

Make your own PT's and invite a PLD and you dont have to tank. Should be able to get to lvl 37 without spending much money.

THF/MNK doesn't contribute much.. THF/WAR is defnitely the best straight out THF sub, nothing comes close.

You mean, other than the fact that SATA combo is the best damage you can do until viper bite, and that you will deal more DoT with a hth weapon than anything else and that stacked boosts can really help SATA damage, right? :p
Granted, post 30 mnk is not as good as war, but he has a ways to go and since he has both levelled he should use both.

As for levelling nin for thf, it's damn expensive. 5k per stack of powders for utsusemi, 12k for hojo, 10k for jubaku, 6k for kurayami, and 8k for dokumori. Of those, I use utsusemi > hojo > jubaku > kurayami > dokumori. Not sure about the elemental resistance lowering powders, I know tsurara are 1.4k a stack, the rest aren't in stock often enough for me to know the price. In 4 hours of levelling I go through about 2 stacks of powders for utsusemi, 1 stack of hojo, 2/3 a stack of kurayami, and jubaku, and a few odd dokumori, hyoton and tonko.

Most ninjas I've partied with half ass it and only use utsusemi. In the little bit of experience I have as a ninja (up to 31, also levelling for a thf sub) it would be damn near impossible to be an effective tank without using hojo (and obviously utsusemi). Those 2 seem to generate the most hate I also have an incredibly hard time recasting utsusemi without using hojo (most low level whm and rdm are more concerned with casting dia than slow). Kurayami is good hate as well, though not as much as hojo I think. I am not sure about jubaku as I just got it, but it seems to be better than kurayami but not as good as hojo for hate purposes. Of course, paralyze is way way more useful than blind, but all 3 are pretty handy. Dokumori (poison) doesn't seem like much hate at all, and the elemental debuffs are pretty much less hate than a hit from one of your weapons as far as i can telll

This is the long path, but try leveling your alchemy craft and make your own powders. "But doesn't this cost lotsa gil to do?" You may ask. Not really. If you farm most of the ingredients you need, the only really big investment is your time.

True, I'll agree that /MNK is better pre-30. I did use h2h in Dunes when I was raising THF, switched to sword post 18 though, up to 25 I think, when switched to kukri.

Yeah, I use about the same roughly.. Not sure on the stacks, but I use 2-3 Utsusemi's per fight, 1 Kurayami, and 1 Hojo, plus if we have a BLM, the proper elemental debuff..

I only have Ninja up to 23, but no problems holding hate so far with voke and kuruyami, though I mithkabob and use two +2 STR rings

poor ninja is a useless ninja, if you are not gonna tank you can do other things
If you dont feel like tanking, get a LS static since you are not gonna take it all the way, and be the main puller. IMO ninjas are best pullers, they dont grab mass hate like rng, with blink they can avoid a few hits coming in(which does mean the whm first spell will not be cure, but dia or para)
Some of that elemental magic is not so exp, a few hours of farming you can have 3 or 4 stacks, you dont need every powder, I use the water/lighting/ice/earth ones the most Most SC go around them, the fire one is like 12k on my server
for myself I go all out, blink-blind-elementals around 13k a lvl at lvl 23 I just love to tank ^^

just as a note, the powder for utsusemi is woodcraft, not alchemy

Directly farming components for crafting is always less efficient than just doing normal farming and buying the components. I can farm 25k/hr normally, but I can't get 25k of crafting components in an hour. Consider that if I could get more than 25k in crafting components per hour, those would be my normal farming items, instead.

Furthermore, in the case of shihei, farming components is a mega waste of time. Unless you can reliably get x2 and x3 synths, it is simply cheaper to buy shihei from the AH. High level woodworkers have driven down the price of shihei to the point that if you are not getting HQs every time, it is more expensive to craft shihei than to buy them from AH. I have 59 WW and I would lose money hand over fist if I crafted my own shihei.

Farm. Get more money. Don't inconvenience others by being a usless gimp.

Levelling Ninja to 37 isn't THAT expensive. Quest the ninjitsu. You can recover your equipment investment, so feel free to get all the goodies (Leaping Boots, Emp Pin, maybe even Kote for 3 levels, though being MNK I would assume you'd have those already).

I'd say at current prices on my server, it might cost 150k to 200k in expendables to tank a NIN job PROPERLY to 37, likely less. And maybe a million or so in equip. That isn't really that bad.
