Saying that PLD is better than NIN or vice versa is nonsense. Yes Ninjas are better in some ocasions but PLDs are better on others. Blink tanking is very unstable and it has a lot of weaknesses, however if the odds are with the Blink tank, they are very efficient, while PLD is more stable and will garatee a steady XP flow.

For a Ninja to perform as well as a PLD is all about the target selection, much like DRGs. If a Ninja goes against Lizards and Anticans they have a much higher probability of KO than a PLD. While fighting slow attacking, AoE poor mobs they will succeed greatly.

I dont feel threatned by Ninja at all. There are SO few good ninjas out there, that their competion doesnt hurt anyone. I think this is more of a pride issue than a rivalry issue.

vs some mobs + thf in the pt i say ninga is alot better than pld

without thf pld is better than ninga

when fighting some mobs who attack fast pld is better

pld have more useful abilitys like cover for erxapmle

but you fighting slow mobs and there is thf in the pt pld can never be better than nin

Anyway, I do respect PLD for their job and Lanurk especially for his objectiveness. I posted on the pld board some time ago about this debate and put forth this analogy.

Ninja is to Paladin as Tech Socks are to Mutal Funds.

Let's begin...

PLD is the "True Tank" I say this in the manner that this job was created to be a tank while a ninja was created as a enfleebler and damage dealer assuming they use shurikens.

Ninja was not intended to be a tank but due to some skilled players we are able to use it to tank. Ninja is not a great tank till 37 but with good evasion gear Ichi is enough. Ninja can tank anything PLD can tank even Lizards and Corels (Silena and Paralyna... Ouch!). The only think I think NIN can't tank is Fafnir but I have yet to see if that is true or not.

PLD is a job which can be played with minimum skill and minimum equipment... PLD can go AFK during fights..

NIN requires a lot of skill and it requires the best evasion gear along with a lot of money. NIN can't go AFK during fights..

NIN deals a lot of damage compared to a PLD... Blade: Ten has done 800 damage for me on a IT monster once I would like to see a PLD do that.

Just remember this "Anything you can do, I can do better!" ("Anything PLD can do, NIN can do better!").

I perfer PLD, but I guess my experience with NIN wasn't that good. I've only had one party with a NIN past 37, and even spamming his Ninjitsu (no stars though) hate wasn't held no where as well as a PLD. With a PLD, I could do a sneak + trick + viper bite onto a Ranger (who's doing ass loads of damage) and the mob sometimes wouldn't turn. Yet with the NIN party, the WAR could easily provoke it off of the NIN when doing skillchains.

Plus, your arguement that there is no downtime with NIN yet there is with PLD isn't exactly valid. (RDM or BRD) + (RDM or SMN) + BLM + DD + DD + PLD and we never had downtime, and that's including after taking two mobs on because of a link. Sure, you'd have downtime if you had a shitty party setup, but why would you even bother partying if it's going to be shitty?

However, I still NIN tanks. Infact, my static party right now is with a NIN tank (playing RNG now, only 24 atm). I have nothing against NINs at all. But if there's a PLD and a NIN seeking, I'm deffinatly taking the PLD.

Pre-37 though, two NIN tanks are awesome. :p

Yeah, if they want the mob running around all over the place. The job isn't as demanding as NIN, but you can't go AFK in the middle of a fight.

Still haven't seen a NIN hold hate anywhere near as well as a PLD, and he was doing everything except shirukens (and from reading this forum, it seems a lot of NINs don't do that anyway).

For every good paladin there are 5 bad paladins.

For every good ninja there are 25 bad ninjas.

For the exorbitant amount of gil and skill required to be an effective ninja they are not that much more useful to a party than a paladin. Certainly not as a pure tank.

Lol A pld can indeed go afk in a fight once hate is established, even if its for 30 sec it is still afk. Point is , a ninja can AFFORD to go afk for more than 10 sec and that is pushing it. Perfect example:

PLD in fights have to worry only about hate control and keeping himself alive. Repeat and rinse for a few hours and you have PLD tanking in a pt

NIN fights flow.....differently depending on players. so i use my self.

mob pulled by thf
mob gets in distance of me i flash blind/para/slow ninjutsu. By this time the backup tank taunts for fuido set up.
Thf fuidos me
I taunt
now the fun begins
Mob misses mitsurugi
mitsurugi parries attack
mob gets DA..and 2 shadows get ate
mob misses mitsurugi
mob readies special attack, BUT b4 that special attack lands you see that the mob has attacked and ate one of your shadows without you seeing the animation of the attack. so in essence your BLINKLESS
Last shadow gets ate mitsurugi casts Utsu: NI
Mob DA AGAIN!!! one hit misses one eats a shadow
Mob attacks 1 shadow ate
Mob attacks 3rd shadow ate
In the time b4 the mob attacks again I need to cast Utsu: Ichi to ensure i dont go blinkless because of lengthy cast time
Mitsurugi casts Utsu : Ichi (here is the tricky part)
Mob misses Mitsurugi (If the mob misses you then you will have to self cancel last shadow b4 timer hits 60% on Utsu: Ichi cast, or you will waste utsu and be defensless anywhere from 5-20 sec


Sigh this goes on and on and ON!!! each battle each pt every damn exp point you get.
Note: I left out the debuffs/magic bursts/and renkeis I do
Another note: this mirrors my fights in Rancors fighting against lizards.....just remember getting petrified is no reason to get hit.SO when time allows you must basicaly fight with your back to the enemy (which i dont advise to ANYONE that has not practiced it solo)
someone PLEASE tell me if a PLD tank is this active as it stands a ninja may only go afk whennothing is being engaged

You left out there part where you have to pay attention to the BLM call to start a 3 part skillchain (penta>piercing arrow>retsu) while counting shadows so the BLM can magic burst freeze for 1100+ D; And I burst too with hyoton:Ni :sweat:

Ninja participating in skillchain with ancient magic burst while blinktanking is hardest thing ever, I had to sometimes pop defender and brace for getting hit because utsu:Ni shadows got eaten up mid renkei - I would have messed up the skillchain+burst had I tried to reblink with ichi.

nono topics like this are good. It brings out the flamers and the people who actually think. Both are welcome and both are needed in the society. Just saying PLD>NIN or NIN>PLD is not good enough, discussion and debate is what it takes. Plus its fun to see outside view points...keep em commin:spin:

Edit: Navia i left the renkei and Magic burst out purposely bc there is no way possible to type and correctly represent the horror of it. I prefer to stay out of Renkei, but now that i can do darkness renkei with 400-900 damage im up for the pain. Still debuffing and then doing 2 MB, while taunting and blinking makes ya tired. WHen 4hrs of pt go by your pt members are like woohoo and your like gahdamnit man my eyes hurt, pls lets continue later

Only in a NIN tank PT have I experience a 10k exp per hour lvling. Yes 10k per hour. Then again, having a RNG, BLM, BRD in the PT made things go very easy too Will have to admit though that the team cooperation was very demanding. I don't think the lvling would of have been anyway near as good if the ppl I PTed with weren't experienced players with excellent gear and items for their jobs. And as all things in FFXI, no one is better at anything unless the whole team is working together.
