  • Versatility of the Ninja

there are some that argue that ninjas are the best tanks, better than PLD. of course its a highly debated subject. i've seen jp ninja tanks use blink and hold aggro so that the party never has downtime.. that the whm just sits around and casts the occassional buff but are purely insurance. the ninja casts about 4-5 shihei's (blink powder) per battle while voking constantly. even with a great pally at the 30-40 level, you still have active whm's and MP regen downtime.

i asked, the group helped split the cost of the ninjitsu, and the tank just kept voking and tanking... so in a way, if you have the $$, ninjas can be a really great tank.

but most people think that they ONLY fall into this tanking category. that unless you have a war sub, ur useless. its partly because normal damage isn't comparable to a damage dealer (which fills up the "anything spot" of the 6 man team.) until you get to lvl 65, when upped dual wield skill eliminates the delay. and ninjitsu isn't as powerful until you get the ni and san levels.. but!

most people dont realize that the lvl 15 ninjitsu can be used as blm support.. eg. lowering fire resistance and using a MB firaga for a helluva lot more damage than a normal MB, without any cost to their TP. add to that the ninja's participation in the renkei (versatile because of the ability to hold two different weapons and switch as needed) as well as to the MB and you got a great addition to your team.

the fact is, NA players aren't exposed to the ninja long enough to realize their potential, and most ninjas dont know their potentials themselves, add to that the frustration of getting all this info organized in one party that's been in the game for 2 months.

so please, to those who feel like ninjas suck or flame them because they have no role other than tank, you probably haven't been in the game long enough to realize that they do have a specialized role in a "well-educated" party. imho, its one of the hardest jobs to level, bc low to mid ninjas aren't as desired (yet)... but the rewards are great in the end.

Good post and great insight, another thing I'd like to add...

People don't really realize how important Ninjutsu is into defining the job itself. A lot of people take the Ichi spells and just assume ninjutsu is garbage. The Ni line of spells are tons better than Ichi, not only that but 2 second casting times on all the spells. If you so wanted to be a 'damage dealer', you could spend your time or hard earned money and buy all 6 DD/Debuff spells in the Ni line. You can flash these in a chain of casts and deal a considerably heavy amount of damage, go back to meleeing, and do it again next refresh. Not to mention, you can Magic Burst with Ninjutsu spells..

Anyhow, thats just a neat little party trick I wanted to add. Great post once again.

The dd ninjitsu is a nice pulling tool, and most blm have no idea that I am lowering elemental resists using them.
I agree that chaining multiple types of element ninjitsu is alot of fun as well as using one to burst with.
The biggest frustration with being a ninja at the lower levels is that so many people have no idea what you can do for a party.

Ninja makes a great puller with blink, even if someone else insists on tanking, you will bring the monster to the party unhurt with your blink still on.

With a paladin in the party that insists on tanking I still gank aggro and blink tank it until their provoke recycles while the incred tough monster took 5 swings at me and missed because it saves the whm mana :p
Last night a blackmage used a -ga spell and aggroed an extra monster which i quickly provoked and offtanked it with blink while we finished off the 1st one. Moments like that really make ninja a fun job :D

If I could only find parties that were decent more often...
