In-game, it's the underlying propensity for a monster to attack a certain character when engaged by multiple characters...
the more damage you do to it or the more you heal/magically assist another character, the more enmity it will have toward you. For PTs, it is absolutely necessary for there to be a good control over the enmity, as to prevent the monster from attacking a backliner (mage, or character low on HP, etc.). certain equipment even have Enmity + or - qualities to further help characters negotiate it in battle.
