  • Monk vs PUP in endgame situations

I'm trying to gather information from people who've lvled monk between '07-'08 and Puppetmasters (No timeframe warrented for PUP). I've started lvling Monk about 2 weeks ago, made it from 1-36 playing at a pretty casual pace. Out of all the classes I've lvled, I've gotten more party invites at a quicker rate than them all combined. WHM, RDM, WAR, NIN, DRG none of them in the 1-36 range had as much invites. Getting to the point. I've leveled PUP to 40, 97% solo, 3% Duo and Trio'ed with other PUPs. I always have my flag up when soloing on PUP but its rare that I ever get invited.

I'd love to have PUP @ 75 and having the ability to solo stuff that perhaps MNK can't, since the Automatron can heal very well and erase/remove debuffs. Do MNK invites slow down at the upper levels? I'm a fan of soloing, I have a high lvl BST and working on PUP for similiar reasons-- However I'm noticing H2H on PUP is holding me back, it takes a day and a half to kill one mob so I can't hope of chaining anything at lvl 40. And at the same time I can /Pup while playing Monk if I want to solo, and at 36 my automatron can cast Cure II's and keep me going while killing 2x as fast...

MNK still gets plenty of XP invites at higher levels as it's a naturally powerful DD, however many times it gets reduced to being a benchwarmer at certain events that comprise of fighting one big monster, utlizing Chi Blast as a main source of damage. Footwork makes MNK/THF using SATA Dragon Kick a bit nicer for endgame things so that's coming back into style a bit

MNK in events that have lots of small fodder mobs like Dynamis/Limbus/Salvage(especially Salvage) is fantastic though, and MNK/DNC is a very powerful solo job(much more than /PUP would be).

PUP will be alot of what you're doing already, though if you are forward and make your own parties that will speed things up a bit. PUP in actual endgame events is pretty iffy, while the BLM head puppet can do respectable damage, actually finding a LS open to the idea of letting you take up an alliance spot with PUP is a large challenge.

I would say that the increase in party invites this time around is more due to level sync then it is becasue of monk as a job. Don't get me wrong though, monk is a great dd at all levels. Pup is not quite as powerful dd wise, but is more flexible overall because of your puppet. Also alot of people still have the 'lolpup' mentallity which is totally unfounded because pups can be great.

Hmm, thats good to know about PUP later down the line. Kinda sux cause I actually like the class and its' flexibility. But I'm to the point where I'm seeing less and less of a reason, when if I ever feel like soloing I can /Dnc or even /Pup and have effective healing + chakra, counter, harder/faster H2H etc from Monk. The only thing I'm kinda peeved about is the high lvl monks still camping out the NM for the +attack (or haste) feet or leggings (can't remember the name) its in the 30-39 range. Its a NM yagado in castle ostroja that pops every 2-3 hours in the middle area. How after so long, these guys dont have it. They have all the best gear, yet still find it cute to cramp up a area for a piece of armor they'll never wear at this point

Keep in mind this isn't WoW, you aren't restricted to a single level 75 job. If you like the H2H playstyle and would like to be active in endgame level MNK. If you also like PUP playstyle then level that too. Nothing is keeping you from getting them both up, though personally I'd recommend finishing MNK first as a way to get your foot in the door of endgame, then you can use that to collect gear for your PUP to ding into.

You can't say that they'll never wear it, because most will. Even if not for their mnk job, okotes and fumas are useful for sam and nin as well, so they could be hunting it for alternate jobs. Even though there are comparable options, +20 attack on okotes is among the best you can find for that slot, good enough to be thought of as endgame gear even at 75, and some use the +3 haste for a haste build as well.

There is also the fact that since Level Sync is now huge in the game, some people who no longer have those pieces might need them again since they have to go back to leveling at lower levels. So no you can't say they would never wear those. There are plenty of reasons for a high level person with good gear to go after them.
