Re: Does Boost count towards normal attacks?

I'll try to remember to do it tonight. Have to find someone who can hold the hate though. If you do test it, remember to not go too low of levels on mobs. Just be sure your attack isnt capped against them before you start testing.

Re: Does Boost count towards normal attacks?

Level 34WAR/17MNK, using a normal level 14 boomerang. Throwing skill: 55.

First tests were inconclusive. Level 1's outside of windurst were taking the same amounts of damage (not even 1 point of variation) with berserk, boost, defender, or no effect on. I decided to go to valkurm. If I hit for a capped damage here, something is seriously wrong. Plus I can hit the same target multiple times before it goes down.

My target this time? A Sand Hare I found near the outpost.

I threw my level 14 boomerang at it's skull a few times to figure out my normal damage on it. Then I used berserk, to be sure I wasn't hitting them for as much as I could in a single shot. Then finally, I removed berserk boosted, throwing the boomerang between boosts.

      Unmodified damage:
      27, 26, 29 - so...26-29

      Berserk:
      37, 36, 35 - So damage with berserk is 35-37, that's quite a noticable difference over 26 to 29.

      Boost:
      2 boosts - 27
      4 boosts - 26
      5 boosts - 27
      6 boosts - 29
      7 boosts - 26
So, with boosts... my damage was 26 to 29, the exact same as my damage without boosts.

Conclusion: Boost does not effect thrown items. The biggest hint was boost not wearing off after a ranged attack, just like sneak and trick attack do not wear off if you use a ranged attack.

Edit: Since there's some confusion on if he was using a bow or a boomerang, I'll buy/make some cheap bow and get some wooden arrows and do the same test on the same job.

Thx Tirrock. I'll try tonight with xbow and bow if I get a chance. Thats what I figured would happen though.

Re: Does Boost count towards normal attacks?

Another poor bunny had to die for this.

Level 1 shortbow, NQ, and level 1 wooden arrows. WAR/MNK again. Capped (93) archery skill.

I pulled the rabbit then determined my normal damage from my ranged attacks, excluding the first, which was at a much better distance for ranged attacks. Then boosted 5 times, shot twice, then boosted again and shot twice again. Then I used berserk and got the damage for that.

          Normal damage:
          29-32

          Boost x5:
          31-32

          Boost x6:
          29-30

          Berserk:
          38-39

Results: Not surprising. Boost did not effect damage with a bow either.

          Double Post Edited:
Oh, and incase anybody is curious... Mighty Strikes and ranged attacks don't stack either. Nor does blood weapon, if I remember correctly. (Not that DRK really needs to blood weapon with a ranged weapon after level 25...)

Re: Does Boost count towards normal attacks?

            Nice tests, Tirrock ^^

Speaking of Boost's incompatibility with ranged attacks, I once came up with a fun way to use THF in the 20's.

Go THF/MNK with a Boomerang. Basically you disengage after SA's and simply Boost and throw the Boomerang for TP, SA/SAWS is ready again. In 60 secs you can Boost 4 times, which is a 50% increase in Attack, twice as much as Berserk and it'd be working on practically every SA. That aside, Ranged Attacks get TP at a faster rate than melee weapons, and a boomerang has practically no "reload" Delay.

Re: Does Boost count towards normal attacks?

basically... boost while somebody's pulling. in endgame, sub whm and boost before chi blast thne run away. and boost before ws's that are 1 hit for alot of damage like howling fist or dragon kick. ws's like asuran and raging fists wont benefit very much from a boost becuase boost only affects one hit (the next one) which would be 1/however many in your ws.

anyways.... if you have a good tank... boosting every chance you get wont be a problem. even if you do accumulate enough hate to overcome flash, voke, pld spells and whatever, the mob wil probably only land one or two hits on you and then go back to the tank. nothing monk paper armor can't handle ;P

Re: Does Boost count towards normal attacks?

I'm going to play the technicality card here, and I apologize in advance.

No hand-to-hand WSs are one hit. Howling Fist and Dragon Kick are both 2 hits. All the same, Boosting for anywherefrom 20 to 50 attack on the first hit isn't going to hurt your damage, it's only going to increase it. In fact, you'll see far higher returns Boosting only prior to your weapon skill and not any other time during the fight than Boosting every 15 seconds during the fight and neglecting to Boost your weapon skill.

This also doesn't mention the worthless hate you build up. I can cope with getting too much hate for putting up insane damage, as much as I try to avoid it. Conversely, getting too much hate because you're spamming high-enmity JAs like Provoke, Boost, Warcry, etc is just.../sigh
