  • Choosing MNK

I'm not quite new to the FFXI universe, I have played the beta version of the game, and I just bought the full verison.
I used to play as a WAR back then, but...I can't transfer my character due to...complications. Anyways, I wanted to play as a MNK, but, I'm worried about when I'll be a lv 30. I dont think I'm going to want to play as a MNK at lv 30 because I am going to want to get an advanced job. Are there any good jobs that are good with MNK as a sub? I was thinking SAM but I'm not sure.

    What do you think?

    Thanks.

no, most advanced jobs don't sub /mnk for XP purposes. However, MNK is a very good job in itself and and put out some really, really good damage at the high levels.

    Thanks Yyg!

I personally can't say monk is a good sub for anything at high levels, unless SAM/MNK for Spirits WS.

        Cool, thanks alot.
What would be the best basic job to start to become a SAM?

Yes, monk is not a widely accepted sub for most jobs because it offers less than other subs. My advice would be: don't just pick a job because it's 'advanced', play whatever job you feel like. Each job has it's advantages and disadvantages. Forget about the advanced tag that comes with a job and play what's fun.

why the heck would you want to be a SAM/mnk? does SAM even have a H2H skill?

anyway, most SAMs start their career as WARs

Jenova, level WAR and THF to 37, because you'll be using WAR to 60 then THF to 75. Some merit parties higher on might be better with WAR sub.

NIN sub works well for soloing / questing.

I assume he's talking about the HP boost from /MNK, both from base stats and job traits, which boost the damage of Spirits Within. This is only ever done at level 75, and rarely at that.

Honestly, I haven't seen a SAM75 use Spirits Within in a very long time. Well equipped Samurai can turn out some amazing numbers against even the toughest NMs in the game.

PUP/MNK? Honestly, I have no clue what a PUP does. Lol.

                        Re: Choosing MNK

Puppetmaster is a pet job class sortof like dragoon and summoner. Hand to hand is a pup's best combat skill, so we theorized for a while that mnk might make a good sub for it, at least in the levels before pup gets Martial Arts naturally and after it can get Martial Arts II from /mnk. I don't know a lot about how the puppetmaster job has developed in practice, though.

                            Re: Choosing MNK

Don't know much about Puppetmaster, but I can ask my LS (one of whom is pushing level 70 PUP now) later tonight.

I think the viability of PUP/MNK will have much to do with whether they're still damaging and accurate enough with Hand to Hand at C (-? +? don't know) rank skill to bother investing in /MNK for Martial Arts. Since so many H2H weaponskills are multihit, it's important that their accuracy be good or some of those hits will miss, making those skills much weaker.

Also note that an offensive Puppetmaster can reportedly deal quite good damage with their puppet alone.

At a rough uneducated guess, I'd say there are probably better support subs for a Puppetmaster (/COR perhaps?).

EDIT: BTW, /MNK provides 3 levels of Martial Arts, at level 1/1 for Martial Arts I, 32/16 for Martial Arts II, and 62/31 for Martial Arts III.

Pup's best combat skill is rated at C? The only other job with that dubious distinction is smn ... I guess there's a parallel there.
