This works until PUP gets it's own Martial Arts trait at lvl 25, the reason it doesnt work past then is because the trait from subjobs and mainjobs don't stack. Not to mention PUP has really crappy choice of gear as far as DD goes.

Yeah, but they only get Martial Arts I naturally, and not until level 25. So from 25-31 /mnk sub is less useful, but from 1-24 and 32 on /mnk gives better Martial Arts than pup has on its own.

        Re: Choosing MNK

It's an interesting thing, the frequent opinion that MNK in itself is so basic a "beginner" job that people will so readily want to abandon it at 30 in favor of one of the so-called "advanced" jobs (a term, I hasted to remind you, which came from the Brady Guide; while in the FFXI manual itself, they are simply referred to as "standard" and "extra" jobs).

In keeping with the general current of opinion has been the much-touted theory that PUP/MNK may prove to be a viable job combination, yet I have yet seen no one suggest or espouse the possibility of MNK/PUP.

Now, I know little to nothing about the puppetmaster job, so I might be quite far off the mark in even making such a suggestion; nevertheless I think it's interesting that even before the release, when no one knew exactly how PUP would work (except for the hand-to-hand skill), still there was not a single voice heard suggesting that PUP would ever be anything other than a main job.

Me? I'm a career Monk. To me, everything else is just a subjob ^^

          Re: Choosing MNK

Well, historically pet jobs have been useless as subs. Slowly, very slowly people are accepting drg and smn as valid subjobs. I doubt bst will ever be.

I heard there was a bug or perhaps an "unplanned feature" with pup that made the puppet just as strong when used with a subjob as if pup were your main job's level.

            Re: Choosing MNK

Bst is a viable sub job for mages who wish to solo. There are reports of whm, blm and rdm being quite successful in soloing even before 'Release'.

As for Mnk, I really don't see Mnk as a viable sub job for normal situations. Warrior makes a better sub job for most melee.

BST is a great subjob for everyone in your alliance when you're planning on tackling Cactrot Rapido! ^_^

                Re: Choosing MNK

I've seen melee's sub DRG for the /DRG haste equipment, jumps, and accuracy/attack bonus traits. And SMN works as a WHM sub. (Although I use /BLM almost all of the time anyway.) BST's already been mentioned. D:

Anyway... WAR, THF, and NIN are the big three subjobs for melees. Some might only use one or two of them, some might use all three at one point or another, but those are the most popular. I could go into more detail, but I'm sure there's a post about what subjobs are useful and why for every job, somewhere.
