I'm partial to monk myeslf... But I don't think there's a massive difference between monk and most other melee jobs in damage, except on skeletons...

And not forgetting One inch punch (h2h skil is capped at 84 @ lvl 27) with this weapon skill took 276 off a mandy

Just wait until level 41 with raging fists... That one will last you until 60, at least.

best for finding parties? no. best for dealing damage? maybe, but there are a lot of good damage dealers. best for just having fun? that's up to you.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned what XP whores MNKs are from 71 to 75. MNK MNK MNK RDM BRD WHM freaking owns in King Ranperre's Tomb. In a merit/XP party the other day, I was averaging 12,000 XP an hour easily. The fights are very fast, and there's really no skillchains involved, unless you're fighing Lemures. The basic principle of a MNK party is kick some ass, kick some more ass, kick some ass again, kick some more ass again, and then when you're done, might wanna take a name or something. The fights are VERY fast, and it's very stressfull for the mages in the party, but it's fun as hell, and a very nice challenge. Those NIN only WHMs would shit their pants at the amount of healing and MP you have to use to keep it going. The whole party might have red HP, and you have no MP what-so-ever, and the RDM might be 5 mins away from convert, but you keep on going, and try to get as high a chain as possible. So far, I've only gotten Chain 39 as a record.

My best friend is an Elvaan MNK. I set with him from 71 to 75 on my WHM with his MNK in King Ranperre's Tomb. It took me about three days getting from 71 to 75, and my XP is almost capped out. He PWNs against gods as well. You can't melee HNMs as MNK, because feeding something TP is bullshit, and you don't want to do that. But if you sub WHM, put on an assload of MND gear, and stack boosts up, you can do 1200+ Chi Blast on Kirin every 3 mins. 1/2 of the time, he'll end up kiting it.

To really try to break down your question though, MNK from around level 20 or so on, will pretty much always hit extremely hard all the time. With good gear, you're pretty much always outclassing BLMs in damage. The drawback is that unlike BLM, DRG, and all other DD jobs, you don't have much else to offer the party. Often, your only concern is not pulling too much hate. This means going 30 seconds with your back turned to the mob so you don't get too much hate and waste the healer's mp.

I went out to get a GC coffer and took on those weapons with a MNK friend, who's about 6 levels under my DRK. I subbed WAR and said I'd tank...

... turned out she was tanking every fight.

I have to say Monk is one of the better looking jobs in terms of Weapon Skills. Combo - Raging Fists - Dragon Kick - Asuran Fists. They're just amazing and the fast pace punching is great too!

Yeah, but as pretty and strong as those WS are when soloed, they're such a pain to skillchain with. MNK only has good closers for Fusion before the 225+ skills, and the the openers for that chain aren't common. I've never seen One Inch Punch for Gravitation, but I hear that skill is unimpressive.

In the past, I was never really a fan of MNK. I leveled it no further than 18 on my last character, and that was only so I could sub it to WAR. Now that I've taken a hiatus from the game (1 year+) and returned, I really feel this urge to play MNK for some reason. I'm looking forward to really seeing what the job can do in the post 20 levels.

It's true that Monks don't get to participate in many renkeis in the early levels, but you do a lot of damage by just spamming WS, and some parties just want that. You are also correct about One Inch Punch, the WS is a joke. hehe
