Nobody can tell you which job is the "greatest". It all depends on your taste and preference that makes it great. SE balanced the jobs, so that each one has a specific role to play. If you enjoy dealing a ton of damage, choose drk. If you like having hp and dealing damage, choose monk. If you want the best armor around, choose PLD.

I really don't like to be mean to beginning players as they have to learn just like I did once. I must ask you though, if one job is hands down better than another job, why doesn't everyone just play the better job? And even if one job is better (let's say, Monk is the best DD hands down) do you think Square Enix would be happy with it being so potent? Don't you think they would do something to equalize the playfield eventually? What's strongest yesterday can be weakest tomorrow.

To really try to break down your question though, MNK from around level 20 or so on, will pretty much always hit extremely hard all the time. With good gear, you're pretty much always outclassing BLMs in damage. The drawback is that unlike BLM, DRG, and all other DD jobs, you don't have much else to offer the party. Often, your only concern is not pulling too much hate. This means going 30 seconds with your back turned to the mob so you don't get too much hate and waste the healer's mp.

Hamburger Earmuffs ftw! MNK definitely puts out some very high damage and in some cases is the best DD in the game. If you've got a good tank there's nothing to worry about with getting hate. If you can pull hate off me and keep it i'll eat my hat.

mnk is a nice job for starters. they are strong, capable of taking care of themself early in the game. will give you an easy start.

monk is a good job for starters because it is simple and easy to get the hang of.

...but if you want to know what is the "best" job, i would say any mage job (white mage, black mage, red mage, etc). the mages practically own ffxi right now. you can't build a pt or do anything without having one around. or two, or three, or five...

I figure that Square-Enix will just make it so that too many BLMs will start to short each other's powers out.

Only conjecture though.

Edit: I do not consider Monk the best job though. There really is no best job as of yet. All jobs have their places in parties and having only one job in a PT usually leads to either too long fights or too long downtime

Im also a newb to the max i just started and i suck lol but ya monks are kick ass but not every body thinks that way all about the way you want to play i myself like to heal =]

My monk rules in the Jungle, I am lvl 27 and always get an invite, i have war sub and can voke off main tank if he/she gets a good beating. 100 fists, what do i have to say???? we pulled a smithy when i was at 25 Focus+dodge+boost+Hundred fists and within 30 seconds I took solely two thirds of the smithies life with it only knocking 200hp off me. And not forgetting One inch punch (h2h skil is capped at 84 @ lvl 27) with this weapon skill took 276 off a mandy.

Current kit for me is - Leigonaires Knuckles, shield earing, Beetle earing, purple belt, battle gloves, Beetle sublinger, great doublet, dharmel mantel +1 Courage ring (x2), cotton kayahan +1 feet.

Use Meet Mithkabobs. and @lvl 27 have 638 HP. (Galka)

I prefer the monk to warrior as a main job, hence why i am continuing this all the way as well as getting paladin once I hit 30.

It terms of raw DMG, MNK can beat all other class especially on Bones. WAR/NIN comes a close second but due to more flexibility of skillchain and better WS/SC choices a lot of people put WAR/NIN ahead of MNK as a job but MNK is a pure DMG dealer and you will obliterate fools and not only fools but crabs and bones and fools.
